Questionnaire

Hey, it would be really great if a few people could fill out this questionnaire and send it to me at extra300s@hotmail.co.uk. I am creating an anemometer for my GCSE electronics project and I need to do some research and I would be really grateful if you could quickly fill this out!

Cheers

I used to pine after a Dwyer pith-ball tube-type anemometer, (often called the "Dwyer liar" for it's less than perfect accuracy) which at around $30 U.S. was still too rich for my blood. Radio Shack stores used to sell a pocket electronic anemomeer which I think was thermistor based, I missed out on the end of their close-out sale. I do gliders and some electrics, and don't bother taking the planes out beyond about 16 MPH, becomes too exciting and no longer fun when the planes and my wallet are at too much risk. At 20 MPH, I instead bring out the kites or the RC sailboats. That range, 30 MPH and under, is all I need to know about. Most indicators I have seen try to cover too wide a range and don't cover this tiny band tightly enough.

I have gotten good at looking at the "free" indicators all around me; the steam from the distant powerplant stacks tells me what's doing at my max altitude, tree tops indicate quite well what the mid to low-level gusts are doing, and finally, checking out the flags in front of homes all along the way on the road to and from work or the gas station, all these things tell me the average wind and gust conditions quite accurately, to the point I no longer desire or need the anemometer. A ten-second look-around will tell me go/no-go, and that's really all I need, the internet or TV weather report fills in the gaps.

What might be more help to me personally would be a thermistor-based sensor to attach to my Tx antenna that would tell me of a subtle temp change of a degree or less to indicate a thermal coming thru. The free-flight guys have these, and some are quite elaborate, but for me to bother, it has to be cheap, very small, and simple.
