View Full Version : Discussion "Trivial" LVP or HVP PIC programmers for 16FxxxA series?

Anybody got any suggestions for which stand-alone programmer to build; the low-voltage, or high voltage version?

I'm looking at the TLVP or THVP, as it apparently is quite good, and well documented, and apparently works well with ICProg.

I'll pretty much be using all new "A" rev. parts, like the 16F877A, 16F876A and 16F648A ( free samples! :D ), which supposedly have issues with some of the older designs.

Also, I'm probably going to be using a boot loader where possible, so in-circuit will be taken care of by an simple RS-232 interface with level converter. (eMeter cable!)

Has anyone made a TLVP or THVP? Any issues, etc, particularly relating to the "A" revs?

Thanks.

This link has a pic programmer pc board with program that is provided with each pre built pic board for a price cheaper than I can build. I just received a pic controller card for a 16F877-20 with the programmer (parallel to pic in circuit) for less than $30.00 US. See This Link.

Wow!

And very reasonable shipping outside the US to boot!

Really good that it offers direct programming via the parallel port, not just relying on a bootloader. (like my incoming MkIII sumo bot)

The only minor caveat is that you're tied to the '877 chip, where the narrow 28-pin '876 is much smaller and nearly identical. (a few less ports...)

Great deal nonetheless!

Just a FYI, the TLVP (one chip and one resistor!) works 100% with the following:

- 16F877A (the "new" one)
- icprog 1.05D set for "Tait serial", 5ms delay, all others default http://www.ic-prog.com/index1.htm
- Windows 98SE
- parallel port

I left out the "terminating" RC components (the resistor/cap on the far right), and it works fine.

You only need those two if you've got wires over 12"

I've attached the TLVP schematic, and here's the link: http://www.finitesite.com/d3jsys/

Great stuff!
