Hi I have a great planes big stick 40 arf. it has a 59 inch wing span and 758 square inches. it is supposed to weigh 5.5 to 6 pounds. what motor would be appropriot for this plane? I would like an outrunner as well. Thanks in advance. All up wieght is 3.5 pounds with no motor.

I always look at the prop the suggested glow engine swings and select the outrunner that can handle that or better. Unfortunately these Ugly Sticks can be a little hard to get the CG since the nose is sometimes really short and want to be tail heavy, so you may have to add ballast or this could be one of those times you want to use nicads or nimhs. It may end up flying at 5.5 lbs or heavier. I'd say an AXI 2826/8 or /10, or it's knock-off equal. I have a /10 in my Lexx with 4S lipos and it's has better than 1:1 thrust at 5 lbs with a 12x6 prop. I'd say mach assemble everything, plane, equipment in the general area....then see how much weight it takes to get the plane balanced. Then you will know how heavy of a battery pack you will need. My Lexx needed 15 oz in the nose area that would be holding the battery to balance the plane. 3 XUS hobbies 4S 1800 lipos weighed 16 oz, so 3x1800= 5400....thats some good flight time too!

How did you make out with your stick conversion. I'm doing a GP 40 size also. I'm using an AXI 2826/12 that I already have and two A123 4S batteries in parallel...

I'm starting on my first conversion. I bought a DeWalt 36v pack and just took it apart. I am going to electrify one of my 40 size planes. I was wondering, I see most guys use the A123's in 4S2P. If I do that I have two cells left over, from the ten cell pack. I am thinking of do 5S2P, just to use all the cells. Any thoughts?

Saw one fly at the club field today. Power 46 E-Flite motor and a 4S TP eXtream pack. Looked to fly real well. AUW around 5lbs I think the fellow told me.

:) Update: Yesterday I flew my stick. Flew great. I had to go with one battery, wasn't enough room for any air flow with two batteries and it was too nose heavy. I used an APC 12x8 prop. It draws 28 amps at 327 watts static. AUW is 5 pounds. Take off on a rough grass R/W was no problem. I didn't time my flights, but I think I can get about 15 minutes on a charge using throttle management. Plane will do a nice loop at .5 to .75 throttle...

how about a power 46 and 5s lipo. you can go to balsa products and get a power 46 equiv. for about half price.
