Quite unusual. What are they used for? Shoving timber around?

They are still used quite extensively on the West Coast. They are used for forming up log booms for transport to the mill or for export. My uncle owned a marina and had one of those for general use around the place. I've driven one when I worked for him during a few summers many years ago. The prop is on a swivel that turns 360'. So you can maneuver in any direction. We got so we could move owners boats around pretty darned quickly. When you watch the operators assembling log booms they don't waste a lot of time. They can really make those little boats hustle.

I didn't think about pics of them working, I work at the mill that still use these little power house, when they get back into the water I'll get some pics of them at work, on the bow at the bottom there are sharp teeth that dig into the logs to help move them along

I know them as log Bronc's. I read an article about them in workboat magazine. I thought they would be a lot of fun with a Z drive so I drew up some plans to build one. There's also a version used by the Navy with roll bars over top that the use as a small docking tug.

Anyone interested, i've got the article saved as a jpeg. Just send me an email.
