View Full Version : Looking for schematic for ESC - with reverse!

Want to build an ESC with reverse capability. I have schematics for airplane ones that have no reverse, and I'm sure I could figure it out, but... wonder if anyone has a schematic laying around.. ?

Here's a PIC based one:

http://www.mcmanis.com/chuck/robotics/projects/servo.html

and here....

http://www.mcmanis.com/chuck/robotics/projects/h-bridge/h-bridge.html

not exactly what your looking for, but there's some theory in there that may help.

Seems from all I've read about ESC's withreverse is they are just normal ESC with an H-Bridge....

That looks good.. I think I can manage to program a PIC..

I got an Idea! For a ducted fan model, you could reverse the engine on landing to act as a brake, just like full-scale jets.

I don't think full size jets reverse direction for breaking, I believe they have mechinisms that simply re-route the air into a forward thrust, thus acting like a break...

Actually, they do this because it would take a few minutes to spool down a turbine from one direction, then fire it up in another. Also, the aerodynamics would be horribly inefficient when run in reverse. That said, it would probably have some effect in an EDF.

I'm looking to make one for a boat, however! I put one together for a young friend of the family, and they "need" a proportional ESC, not the mechanical one that came with it, but they aren't going to spring for the additional $$. I could probably make one for $10 or so worth of parts..

shucks..... and i thought you were gonna put it on a prop job for some real creative aerobatics .... as flying backwards...but you can do that just by putting the prop on wrong ......... kw

I could probably make one for $10 or so worth of parts. How about buying a used R/C car ESC? A working low end unit, with reverse, would probably sell for under $25. That way you can use the time saved to fly your fleet of e-planes!

Building these little electronic doo-dads is always more work than it seems. I should know, I get sucked into these sort of projects on a weekly basis. Sounds like fun, but the summer weather is better suited for flying. ;)

If you build one, please let us know how it goes.

hobby people has many cheap reversible speed controls

one made by traxxas, XTM car, and an xtm boat speed control-not the big one for the traxxas boad but for a speed 400 size boat
all under 40$

I want one too...

Why dont they have super micro esc with reverse? I could have used one in my micro car by now...surely a super lite blimp can benifit from 2 side fans that can reverse for axis steering ;).

Castle creations said they were gona make one in an email I asked if they could/would a year ago... I have yet to see it ;).

I basicly need one smaller then exists out there, like a 5 to 10A range micro esc.. with reverse... (space reasons not weight).

I'm guessing this one is too large?

From Hobby Lobby (]http://www.hobby-lobby.com/boatcont.htm[/url)
GR2736 Micro Speed 10 Motor Control with Reverse .... $ 67.60
For 2 to 12v input, 10 Amps constant current, 20 Amps max (one minute), 30 Amps max (1 second). Weight one ounce, 1-7/8” x 7/8 x 3/8”.

There are some ESC circuits here, one has reverse.

Andy,

Good luck on building a reverser esc for 10 bucks , I looked around for one with bec that would power my Aventura II and ended up with a 90 dollar model from Astroflight. My guess is there is little market for them and there has to be twice as many of the most expensive parts. Maybe modifying a smaller unit for more current would work , number of cells is another consideration , I wanted one that would handle 10 cells.

There were only 4 flights untill it was midaired and none off of water but the reverse in flight was to say the least , interesting!

its a little long, but its flat areas should fit around were i need them too... :)

Now I need a GROUND frequency RECIEVER thats even smaller... so I dont mess up any local aircraft pilots sneeking on a aircraft freq like a few others are doing...

Andy,

If you send me code, I'll program a PIC for you and send it to you. -- let me know what kind of PIC you need.

Hi-Tec make one. It's called SP-560, for cars, supposed to have a BEC, but it doesn't cut in. This thing sucks all life out of the system, but a seperate Rx pack ought to cure that.... The damned thing can handle...wait for it...200A continuous!!!!! 800A peak! I was going to install one in my Cargo, to make life fun whilst taxi-ing. Ah well. Retails over the pond here (UK) at about £45.
Blue skies, kiddo.
