Hi Everyone
Great new forum.
I have been really liking the look of the Futurion. No plans will be available and out here in New Zealand no kits will either. Soooo using freely available web info I have drawn my own interpretation of the model and called it CIRKUS in acknowledgement to the original designer. The model doesnt seem to be a radical departure from existing designs just nice styling and the undercarriage. Will print the plans tomorrow and start cutting. The main thing will be to get the weight down. I have a 114 gm Knuffel and hope to get this under 150.

I like the look of the Futurion/Circus. The landing gear is pretty distinctive. You beat me to making a drawing out of the published photos.
(Off Topic)
... I'd say that your posted drawing is enough to allow anybody, who really wants to, to build their own. I am sometimes a bit uneasy about plans for somebody else's stuff that will/may be sold as a kit (like Tensor/Sortatensor some months ago). At such a reduced size, it is probably OK.
Uhhh, I am trying to say that I am glad to have a way to build something like the Futurion, but I wish Donatas (what's the last name?) could have released it first. Nice work anyway. ... not trying to start an argument about anything ...

From what I've read in various forums, the Futurion is all 3mm Depron with the exception of the wings which are 2mm. I believe Donatas doesn't use any carbon fiber anywhere. Just a bit of thread bracing.

Any update on your plane, Wetafly? Mine's flying great, even after a couple of dumb thumbs. :o I've used your plans to build mine, but I decided to make my own plans based on what you've posted. I've done many modifications for better bulding and to look a lil more like the Futurion. I'll try to print, cut and paint it next weekend. This one also has a shorter fuse, about 1 1/4".
I don't think we will have a Futurion kit anytime soon. But I hope it comes out. This plane flies really nice. I've also seen a full fuse version of it at www.docinsane.com. Check the wallpaper section. BTW, I use Photoshop to do my plans.

I'm little shocked, i was reading RC forums and bam i see my plane free plans..:) Wetafly weight of your plane is 73g...? This is way to much, my Futurion is ~50g glued together without electric.
First of all glad to see you like my design. Anyway kiting of Futurion is not going very well at the moment, but there still is some chances that plane will be released as a kit...:(
If not i have one idea to release hi quality Futurion 4D plans with building manual with many pictures and building tips how to build very light and strong airplane. All package will cost ~20$, let me know if there is some interest.

Hi Donatas
Have hardly flown it yet as Ive gone off the boil a bit lately with indoor (too many projects). Will fly again next week.
As I pointed out at the beginning there is no way we will see these kits in New Zealand. So I reverse engineered the model from pictures and freely available info on the net. The drawings I have put up are not detailed enough for building and were only meant to be illustrative. If you are interested in looking at my Autocad file I will send it too you. I would be happy to pay for drawings and building tips especially if II could build the airframe down to 50 gm. I used the same sort of construction as for my 115 gm Knuffels and the Cirkus came out with a lighter wing loading. There has been some talk of optimum loadingsa little heavier.
Anyway great you dropped in I hope you can share some of your expertise.

Guys i understand your interest in my plane (same was with my when Tensor show up). Malves and Wetafly thanks for keeping plans for your self, i work on this plane almost one year, now im flying 5th version of freestyle Futurion and i believe it is perfect now.
Now im making movie with Futurion for Flying Giants viewer choice contest and talking with few manufacturers about Futurion kitting if nothing good came out, somewhere in this October full plans with manual will be available.
Jeff nice to see you to! maybe you can tell me title of last song you used in Freestyle in Chitty 3D contest?
Jerry thanks for kind words! Its sure is many problems getting plane kitted:)
Now about these skids, i was using bamboo for them, but i don't use them any more, i found that it save few g but after sew hard landing wing become twisted and that make bad influence on flying characteristics. Each time after take off i need to trim plane...Now i use 1.5mm carbon rod with 5mm EPP "whel pant".
Here is last version of Futurion:
http://www.flashmob.eik.lt/video/FUT.jpg
http://www.flashmob.eik.lt/video/FUT1.jpg
120g without battery, with 2cell TP 480 i get 144g rtf weight! Power is unbelievable! Next step VPP Futurion, with ~160g it should be killer in freestyle!

Donatas,
I had the problem of wing warping on my Ballerina design, I was using a skid style landing gear similar to the one that you used on the Futurion. I used Depron with a 0.003" thick carbon runner on the edge of the Depron. I have now gone back to 1.5mm carbon rod and wheels. It looks as if you are using bamboo for your aileron pushrods?

Thanks Malves, believe me look of this plane is second vantage, first goes flying characteristics, i believe Futurion is one of the best (if not the best) flying plane for freestyle from what we have today. This is very brave announcement , but from what i flew (~50 indoor planes) and saw on Internet and in real, i can't find plane with such good flying characteristics. It is perfect plane to learn fly 3D, all hard maneuvers are to easy with this plane! And expert with right setup and just little practice can perform craziest manoeuvres.
Hope you will find it by your self after 2-3 months:)
Jerry you right carbon rods is best option for landing gear, only wheels are better from EPP, that save 2-6g! And yes i use bamboo to connect top and bottom ailerons, and to connect servo with them as well. This work really nice, is light and cheap!
Wetafly it would be nice to get your autocad plans, thanks, here is my email: donatas.pauzuolis@gmail.com
By the way guys now im working on new design, it will be certainly something new and killer looking!!! Keep on looking here:)

Here is last version of Futurion: Too bad the skids did not work perfect. They looked so neat. I was wondering if there would be any sense in putting wheels where the original design had the skids and bracing it with something.
matchlessaero
Jul 21, 2006, 08:08 AM
Perttime, Jason Noll's ultralight Eclipse that he used at the ETOC had similar skids... The plane did not handle well at all on the ground. It appeared to be partially blamed on the friction on the ground, and partially because of the location of the skids (too far back)

3Don, I got bored last night (I hate insomnia!) so I started playing around drawing some plans for a full-fuse Futurion from some pics I found online.
Could I send you a copy (full size pdf) for you to have a look at and give me some feed back?
No-one (except for you and me) will see them, and you're welcome to use them as you see fit if they look usable (might save you a little time drawing plans up yourself). Some "Shocky Fuselage" style plans would be no problems either.....
I can't wait to see your FlyingGiants Video Contest video, you always blow me away with the freestyle routines you come up with!

Here's my rendition of the Cirkus built from the jpeg image provided in the first post of this thread by Rod (Wetafly). Span is 700mm (the width of one sheet of 3mm depron) and it's 780mm long. RTF weight is 167g with 20g motor and 27g Hyperion 350mAh 2s battery.
The flying was interesting! At first it was very difficult to get it flying in a straight line. Rudder was fine but ailerons gave loads of adverse yaw. And once the turn was established it would continue turning on its own with hands off - almost as if the servo had a double neutral.
I raised all ailerons about 2mm and this made it better, but not perfect. Someone then pointed out that the struts had a lot of side area in front of the CG, so we set about removing lots of material. Eventually it was flying well, but still a little tricky getting it flying straight line.
Even though it has some vices this is the best flying indoor model I've had. It locks into the hover very easily and torque rolls in a way that makes me look like a good pilot
I'll probalby cut another one and place the struts further back to see if this improves matters.

Mike, how did you print the plans out, I could do it if they were in a A4 tiled PDF format??
Plans...what plans? I just printed the jpeg from post #1 and measured some dimensions to get a rough idea of where to cut the depron. It would be nice to see some plans so I could know how far out from the original I am. This might allow me to see why mine has this odd flying characteristic. However, from previous posts in this thread I think it unlikely that we'll see any plans so I'll just make do and learn from the experience.

If you reckon there's too much side area up front causing yaw instability then you can just add some side area at the back on your current model to test the theory rather than building a new one without being sure. Just add a larger rudder or add some material to the profile along it's length whichever suits. If this improves matters then your diagnosis is correct!

So. Question......
What size biplane is appropriate for a MicroREX220/3/3200 11g motor on 2s 300mAh cells and either a 6x3 or 7x3.5 (should be ~33W and ~40W respectively)
I'm thinking approx 680mm span and 2000sqcm.
I hope I'm right because that's the dimensions of a bipe I just helped my father design for his new equipment! Couldn't find much info for bipes below AXI 2204 size. I'm pretty confident it'll perform well so long as he keeps the weight below 140g or so.
What do you think based on the Cirkus which isn't far off in size?

FYI, I flew my 700mm span 167g plane using a three cell motor on 2-cells. Power would have been about 30W. It had enough to hover and do all other manouvres I wanted, but it will be more fun next month when I get a 2-cell motor for it.
I did nothing special to make this model light except for the closed loop rudder and elevator controls, and I even let my daughter go mad with the paint. If I was able to swap my motor (20g) for the 11g MicroREX and go from 30W to 40W it would make for a very nice flyer indeed.
In short, I think you're about right with a model of this size.

Mike your plane reminds my first version of Futurion, it had close problems.
Fir'st i would like to say we are working on hi quality plans with manual and many usefull information about indoor plane setup, which is key to succesful flying. Believe me with right setup this plane is perfect 3D trainer, it is very easy to do any 3D manuover, KE, point and snap rolls. And yes it is freestyle plane, so don't exect calm and smoth flying:)
Sory i can't give any exact dates (but i hope no longer than one month) till plans will be avialable for sale. As i told it will be not only simply plan, but also all details, with suggestions what equipment you should use to get best flying characterystics. Also many advices how to make plane lighter, stronger, right throws, CG, Expo, ETC. In one word you will get manual how to prepare competition level indoor plane!
Also now we preparing plans for FuturionXXL version for outdoor flying, 82cm wings, 92cm fuselage, powered with Himax4100 engine + gearbox, 12x6 gws, 3S 800mah packs. I will test prototype this week, and post some pictures here.
Probably set you will get include, both plans and building manual in pdf.
Next step, we decide to make kits by ourselves, now we are solving all small problems (best materials, painting, hardware), and planning to start production soon.
For the moment please visit Flying giants video contest page: http://www.flyinggiants.com/content/06gsvc/vote.aspx

If your motor is 3 or 4 times heavier than it should be and the VPP system won't fit without changing wing spacing then maybe you're looking at the wrong plane!
Any plane this size with a 60g motor is going to be way overweight and therefore too fast for comfortable indoor flying. The motor alone is going to weigh nearly half what the plane should ideally weigh:eek: . Unless you have a VERY big space to fly in or you plan to do a lot of hovering I'd seriously suggest you re-think that motor. I pressume a 60g motor is capable of 150W+? If so are you planning to use that power, which would require a bigger battery and even more weight, or were you planning to prop down for moderate power with a 20g to 30g battery?
If you don't intend to stay with the 60g motor I'd say you certainly need to scale up the Circus design to say 120% (36sqdm/560sqin) or perhaps even bigger. Scaling up might also provide enough space for the prop.

you are right abouth the weight i have 115 grams with only the motor, esc and servos, i curently do not have the baterys but thinking of 2 cell 1500ma so my weight will be an isue. i am not too keen on indoor flying because i dont have anywhere where i can (unless my school lets me) I will see if i can scale it up i will see... if the sheets of depron are big enough. anyways thanks for your opinion...
Also does anyone know where the best place to mid mount a vpp setup... on the c of g or just b4 it.. thanks

I have plagiarized one :) it's not even absolutely the same as 3Dons Futurion (there are some differences), but flyes very nice, almost the same I belive. There are some mistakes in building, but I am still not so good to fell the difference in flight, so I havo no headache for that :)

What are you trying to say. Are you trying to say that if some will send you plans to the Futurion or post them. The answer is no because Donatas doesn't want them public.

Donatas has not advertised it much, as far as I can tell. They seem to have lots of Futurions flying in UK (?)
This is the best information I have found:

"Airbrushed kits available for 75eur, for more information send email to me. "
