View Full Version : News Hansen Dam Lake "Irregulars" Report

Might as well make this a weekly thread and report on the goings on at Hansen Dam Lake!
04/06/2006:
Richard brought his "Damsterdam" as he calls her. It's the Latina "Amsterdam II" but he has sunk it, broken stuff off it, etc. So that's his nickname for her. Still, a great looking boat and Richard really knows how to build nice ones. This tug had a very realistic sounding horn that is actived at full rudder movement.
Cap'n Bob was there with his "Jaws" fishing boat, and amphibious car. "Jaws" the shark that was always hanging off the boat got torn off and he has not replaced it yet which is a shame as it always what 'made' that boat.
The usual sailboat reprobates were there hogging frequency time with their slooooow azzzz sailboats. :p
I brought the redecorated and battery heavy Bristol Bay and she ran fine for about an hour then started getting weird glitching. Couldn't quite figure it out. If she ran on the opposite side of the dock, no glitching. I was letting Brad run her so I could shoot some pictures. He has never had a boat with reverse I don't think. He kept running in reverse a lot. After about 20 minutes of him running the boat it started making funny sounds. When I pulled it out of the lake and opened the ahtch, the inside was full with 2" of water and the motor was almost submerged! The brushes at least got a good seating as the water was nearly black!
The lake was closed for fishing today and tomorrow because they are having a fishing tournament Saturday. While we were there, the truck that stocks the lake with trout showed up and dumped his load right where we run. It was fun to watch the trout jumping out of the water around the r/c boats! Some trout did not look like they were in very good shape though. They would just hang nose up in the water.
The submarine guys have been gone for 3 weeks. Need to have them come back.

It was a rather warm and sunny day today, temps around mid 80's and no breeze when I arrived around 12:30. Steve C. and Micronaut had boats in the water. Steve was running a Saito steam powered scratch built boat. Don't know what type but it was designed to be a paddle wheeler. The 2nd one he is building will have the paddle wheel config. Micronaut was running his Amsterdam tug. There was another boat in the water, but I could not see anyone else on the pier. Then I saw what was going on. All the irregulars were hiding under the shade of a tree in front of the public restrooms, about 100 feet away from the pier. I called out to them that they were a bunch of sissies and candy azzez but they didn't seem to care, lol....
So the other boat in the water was the Jaws hunter piloted by Cap'n Bob. I set my B'Bay in the water, pulled up a camp chair and started boating! In the sun. Anyway, had a few onlookers and one family came up and was asking all the typical questions. I let a boy who had the most interest drive my boat and he was really enjoying it and I think he had his Dad convinced to go to the hobby shop and buy one. Heh-heh, another one addicted! ;) After about a half hour I moved into the shade because I wanted some conversation.
I never ran something so long before that made my hand cramp up but it did today. I ran my B'Bay for 2:45 straight and still had lots of battery left but it was time to go! She ran perfect today and since no one was backing up there was virtually no water in the hull today. Just a tiny bit from the couple times I had to reverse to avoid a buoy or pier. I am thoroughly enjoying this model and it is currently my favorite.
Cap'n Horrible still is working on a TV show I presume and so he was not there. His scallywag mate Steve N. also didn't show up again.
The wind picked up around 1:30 and a couple of the sailing ships went out and another one of the irregulars, Richard, had his Atlantic Tug there but was spooked by the wind and choppy water and so did not launch her. The B'Bay was being pushed hard by the wind, it's amazing how those little rolled up sails are affected by it.
No pics or video this week, I just drove instead. :D

Kmot -- I drive the 210 regularly from Valencia to Irwindale. Is the exit to the area where you sail the Osbourne exit? When I was coming back yesterday (northbound), I could see what looked like some water and a waterslide further behind that. How would I find your group If I should run down to Hansen Dam on a Thursday extended lunch break?

Pete: Yes, get off at Osborne. Northbound, turn left under the freeway. Southbound, turn right from the bottom of the offramp. It actually puts you on Foothill Blvd and you are heading toward Osborne. When you get to Osborne (traffic light, and public library on your left) you turn left onto it. Head up to the next light, which is the entrance to the park. Take the entrance road to the stop sign. Turn left. Travel that road past all the parking lights to the next stop sign. Turn right. You are now approaching the water slide you saw which is part of the swimming pool area (massive). Turn left into that parking area and next to the swimming area is the fishing lake. That is where we run. We are on the dock. You will see us there.
I brought out my Villain EX to run. Been a year or so since it was in water. Had new props from Offshore Electrics. Man, that boat moved out nicely with the upgrade. I also was using a pair of new 4200Mah 6-cell stick packs and I must have run for a half hour on them and still had some left when I had to leave.
Cap'n Horrible was back. With another new sub! This one was killer! A Robbe U-boat that is over 6 feet long and looked sooooo cool in the water.
Cap'n Bob had a scratch built Mayflower like what the pilgrims sailed over from England. Amazing detail and looked really neat on the water. The sails on his boat are amazingly efficient as it motored around in almost zero wind! <G>
The usual reprobates were sailing their yachts and I had fun whizzing around them and inbetween them with the Villain EX.

Hello all, Thursday this week was quite pleasant after all. The weather was threatening , but once we all decided to climb out of our trucks the sun peeked out & things were nice for a couple of hours boating. Our esteemed colleagues, Cap'n Hank & Cap'n Richard brought out the sailboats & sat under the trees for some shade, Cap'n Brad brought his "deadhead" sailboat & I brought my Type XXI & rescue tug again. After losing the ESC for a few minutes (the power switch caught on some line) the XXI was retrieved by favorable currents, winds & a little help from the aforementioned rescue tug. (phew that was the best $200.00 I EVER spent!)
All in all it was another wonderful day at the lake... can't wait till summer there.
Your guest reporter,

The weather was perfect for model boating, imho. Overcast, cool, and winds alternating between brisk and calm. Good for the sailboats as well as powered craft. Just wait a while and you get your choice. :)
Cap'n Bob had another one of his scratch built creations. This time it was an old 1800's style riverboat. I am guessing actually, I need to get him to clarify. Anyway, he said it was what his grandmother used to sail on. Maybe when she was a little girl. It had the steering wheel connected by ropes to the rudder and when the rudder turned the wheel turned. It also had a load of hay bales but we kidded him about what we thought it actually was. lol...
The submariners, Cap'n Horrible and Steve Neil had a fleet of subs this week. Steve's USS Wahington was dialed and looked great cruising under the water. His other little sub had a mechanical problem and we though it was sunk. The lifeguard was ready to go in after it and it suddenly popped up to the surface. Another near victim of the NATO Sub Snare Netting (fishing line) all over the lake. Cap'n Horrible has a new Robbe U-2540 sub and it is the cats meow! This sub model is freakin' huge and just looks so awesome. I want one!
The usual sailboats were there. Nothing much to say about them. They just keep on sailin'!
I had my Bristol Bay and was experiencing that maddening radio glitching again. Well, thanks to Cap'n Horrible and his idea the problem has been identified. He took the crystal out of my Tx and put it into his Tx, and problem solved! NO glitching. So, we learned that my factory Tx is causing the problems and now I know what to do.
I ran the Villain EX again and it performed flawlessly albeit a little sluggish in the choppy water. The cooling system I installed works so well, that after running about 20-30 minutes and limping back to the dock with totally dumped batteries I temp'd the motors and they were around 81*F. Before the cooling system, I would not be able to touch them for more than a second.
Cap'n Horrible brought a floating bumper dock for his u-boot. But his u-boot sits too low in the water and it only protected the sail. However, the bumper was perfect for the large sailboats!
Another perfect day at Hansen Dam Lake. :D

It was hot today! 93*F at the lake, whew!
Cap'n Horrible brought a fleet of ships and boats. The newest was a vintage Sterling WWII Freighter. A diamond in the rough, as it appears. Harry did some tug practice with it. His Robbe 2540 U-boat was performing flawlessly.
I brought a new purchase. A ChiCom knockoff of the Kyosho Atlantio. This version cost a total of $32 delivered and came RTR including batteries. It ran so well, I will be putting a proper radio in it. It's functions are only on/off right now. Full rudder, or neutral. Full throttle, or off. I found that by pulsing the rudder I could make a somewhat smooth turn. Took a bit of running to figure that though and the video shows how it performs otherwise.
Cap'n Bob had a nice version of the Hellen trawler from Bristol Bay, U.K. And lastly Capn' Richard brought out a small New Bright Pier 57 offshore catamaran. He bought it cuz he liked the trailer. :p It was so fast at 3 to 5 mph his knuckles were turning white from the intensity, lol... :D

It was pretty subdued at Hansen today. Almost didn't get in. Some filming crew was there and had the parking lot entrances all blocked off. Only way to get in was to squeeze past some guys under an Eazy-Up with a bunch of movie cameras.
I brought out my 2nd ChiCom boat to run. And one other person had a sailboat. That was it! There were 5 members there but only two boats.
The wind was pretty strong and the water was really choppy. I put my Syma "Century" twin screw sport boat in with a 6-cell pack. It seemed blazing fast in my swimming pool, but not so fast in a lake lol....
Still it was not bad. Especially considering the cost. I would estimate speed around 15 mph in the choppy water. And the wind was pushing the boat, making steering corrections necessary constantly even though it had been trimmed to drive straight.
I let it cool off for awhile and then put in a 7-cell pack. Much better! Probably 20 mph. On glass smooth water this would be even faster. Well, for $32 I am not complaining. My Watts Up meter registered 17 Amps peak during use.
Harry, if you go next week can you do the update? I will not be there.

It was a pleasant day at the lake yesterday, a bit choppy & a little too windy for some of the sailboats, but we all got some hull time in! All the regulars were there and I finally got smart & sat under the shade of a tree with the guys.
we met a new fellow named Pete G. He brought a beautiful trawler that happened to still be wearing it's first place ribbon proudly!
I got my C-2 in the water a couple of hours for some testing.
All in all another perfect day at the lake.

I was there last week, but can't make it there today.
Horrible Harry brought his Tyoe 21 U-Boat, a beautiful piece of work. The sub is a dynamic diver, meaning it will dive with the diving planes only and no ballast system. It also proved to be maneuverable on one of two props, as the reverse torque was so strong that the left prop backed off the shaft during one of the quick reverses. But it was good enough to do that in water close enough to the shore and shallow enough for a successful salvage operation and the prop was recovered. Loctite, Loctite, Loctite....
Harry also brought his tug which maneubers and runs like a charm. There were also at least two sailboats there which handled the stiff breeze very nicely. Lots of good chat accompanied a weather-perfect day with a lot of sunshine.

http://www.fototime.com/EE4E8F11FC42BB5/standard.jpg
Gnawed a hole in the attic ceiling over a kitchen cabinet and moved in. Started setting up a nest. Tore up the boxes and other stuff in there. Brought down insulation from the attic and pieces of roof wood. Feces and urine all over the place. Have chewed through the wires of my home alarm system and two alarm zones are now dead. Probably are chewing through main house wiring as well, which leads to electrical shorts and the house burning down. Potentially killing the human inhabitants. I can hear them scratching and plucking on wires up there frequently. It is going to cost us hundreds, if not thousands to remove and control these pests!!

Years ago my inlaws had the same problem. They came in thru the attic vent on the side of the house. I used 2 layers of 1/4" hardware cloth and layed it offset from each layer to create 1/8" squares secured with sheet metal screws with fender washers. You could hear them trying to get back in but they couldn't get past it. Problem solved.

I lived in a duplex that the squirrels were into the roof, I blocked up their entrance with a 2x4 and some shim. I had no idea they would get destructive. If I had known, I would have unblocked the hole before I moved out and let the :censored: landlord deal with it.

Went to Hansen Lake last week and couldn't run because a group of kids were using the model boat area for swimming lessons.
Went today earlier than usual due to the blistering summer heat. I met Matt (u16xxxx?) there and he was sea trialing his Donzi with a new battery package. We almost didn't get to run because a Hollyweird crew was doing filming and had a permit to use the model dock. But they were on another side of the park so the lifeguard let us run. BTW, the lifeguards at Hansen are waaaaaaaay cool compared to the :censored:'s at Balboa Lake! So anyway, the wind was blowing and the water was very rough and choppy but these two big boats the Donzi and the Venice handled it with aplomb. My deck did get splashed quite a bit and the floors in the seating areas had some water because of the wind blowing the splashing water off the bow backwards. I noticed Matt's boat got pretty wet too. He needs to adjust his CG now with the lighter batteries. But man, does it get up and scoot now!
Because the lifeguards at Hansen are so cool I felt confident in pushing the Spektrum radio to a distance I normally do not attempt. I knew they would go rescue my boat if needed. So I drove it to the middle of the lake and had no control problems at all. I would say that was about 250 yards but maybe Steve C. or Cap'n Horrible can comment on what distance they think the middle of the lake is from the dock.
Oh, and also Cap'n Horrible seems to have disappeared from the planet. He has not been seen posting on any message boards since last June and has not answered any posts to his whereabouts or answered any e-mails.

Went to Hansen Lake today, all prepared to try out an experimental onboard video system. But, the model boat dock was full of kids and lifeguards. There were a couple large multi-person rowboats in the area so needless to say it was off limits today. Model boaters are at the bottom of the totem pole...
Drove over to Balboa Lake. Several people had set up blankets and were picnicking and also feeding the birds. Signs posted that say "Model Boats Only" had no influence as well as signs posted that say "Do Not Feed Birds".
And I thought I wouldn't have to put up with this kind of crap on weekdays.

Did you go too early today? I was there at 1:15 and the usual suspects were there boating.
Thanks

Matt went there on Friday at 12:30 and same thing. A kiddie event on the dock. Is there a online schedule of the stuff the lifegaurds plan on doing?

Tom,
I feel your pain regarding Hansen Dam. I have to imagine that things will calm down once we find ourselves in late September, etc.
There is one other little pesky issue we have to deal with at Lake Balboa: The mosquitos. I heard on the news this week that they caught a couple of mosquitos which tested positive for West Nile right by there. For those of you not familiar with Lake Balboa in SoCal, it is a real nice park / lake area - very large. The problem with the lake (besides everything KMOT has shared with you already) is that the water is "reclaimed". The water is filthy and smells. I hate to see our boats running in that dirty water. Even more shocking to the conscience, you see people fishing there all the time. Some things in life I will never understand.

Today was a pristine and perfect day at Hansen! Arrived early, and was all setup at 11:00 AM. There was no one at the lake. No fisherman. No kayakers. No peddle boaters. No kiddies. No joggers. No mommies with strollers. Just incredible. The water was flat, and there was very little wind.
The plan was to do some boat to boat video of Matt's (U-166335 something or other :p ) Donzi. So the conditions for filming were perfect. The conceptual idea was good. But the execution didn't quite work out. Have some bugs to work out, but at least I know what to do to sort it out. As a first time experiment, it didn't turn out disastrous. Just less than hoped for. But non the less, very encouraging. Look for the video in another post.
Later on, the rest of the Irregulars showed up. I hung around and chatted with them but with the exception of Steve C., no one else put a boat in the water. Just hung out under the shade tree..... Well, the wind coming off the lake after noon time did feel really nice!

Arrived at 12 noon sharp today and shortlay after the rest of the Irregulars arrived. It was a very nice day at Hansen Lake. About upper 70's and a slight breeze. Water was fairly smooth and good for all size boats. There were three paddle boats in the lake to watch out for. But no fisherman and lines to tangle with.
I didn't bring any cameras today. Just ran boats. I first ran a New Bright "Sea Ray 48" toy boat. I bought it and hoped it might have a proportional radio. It does not. It is very toyish looking, like all the rest of the ChiCom boats of late. It has potential. It could be detailed further with paint, etc. But it still would need hobby grade electronics. And the propulsion system is weird. I don't think this particular toy boat would be worth it. So it will remain as is. I also ran my big woodie again.
Steve C. had his incredibly detailed Snowberry based warship and it looks so good. It is a true museum piece that he drives on the lake.
A very irregular Irregular named Marty showed up today with a 1/25 scale WWII type tugboat but in civilian livery. All scratch built. He even made the metal fittings for it. A beautiful and authentic looking tug.
Lastly, the usual sailboat reprobates were there getting in the way of the real model boats. :p
Everybody come on down! Thursday's at noon. It's very cool.

Hey Kmot, Is the "reclaimed" water in the balboa lake what i think it is?
If so how does it get there? and where does it go after the lake?
How long does normally take you to drive to hansen or from hansen to balboa?
Do you have to deal with much traffic in your neck of the woods?

Nothing.

Phill: Yes, it is sewer water in Lake Balboa. I think it goes to the ocean afterwards but not sure.
Lots of traffic in the LA basin. It takes me 20 minutes on a weekday to get to Hansen from my home when there is light traffic. From Hansen to Balboa takes around 25-30 minutes. From my home to Balboa takes about 10 minutes.

It is about a bunch of guys having fun with there boats. Skip the thread or just enjoy the pictures and the videos that are presented. There are some threads that I do not have an interest in also.
Thanks

What's so important about hansens dam that this subject be on dock talk. I thought this was a boat site!!! From my understanding, this site was to help the people who need advise from Gurus on rc boats and the like!!! I don't see any other part of the world mention news of their areas! Alright jump on me, i don't care but it's the truth! I don't have a bug up my **s today but hear and read and thought it should be aired!

Kmot, I live probably 2,000 miles from Hansen Dam Lake, will likely never see it or run a boat on it, but I thoroughly enjoy your reports on the activities of the Irregulars. Thank you for taking the time and going to the trouble of sharing with those of us who do look forward to your posts. Regards -

Better than ICE CREAM and CAKE!
A thousand mile trip I would make
To meet all the boys
And sail with their toys...
It would be to Hansen's Dam Lake!

I think it`s odd that you have a problem regarding this thread, given it is about boat guys talking about where they run their boats and the problems they face in doing so or the ease of which they can access a safe and clean area to run the boats.
Its not like its a big secret as to where anyone runs his boat, water is water after all. Though the "reclaimed" water would understandably be undesireable.
Kmot didnt have a problem revealing his travel times and it`s only fair to wish to know how far someone is willing to travel to take their boat out. ;)

Similar to thread on Tualatin Crawfish Festival, Foss Cup, Task Force 50 Fun Run, Combat Nationals, or the St Louis Regatta, this thread for the Hansen Dam Irregulars has been a nice documentation about sailing days for a group of model boaters with no local club.
It has also been nice that it has been kept in one thread, rather than 12- 20 threads created for each day they have sailed this year. The reader can see what was sailed on one day, what worked, or didn't and what changes were made to improve the boat, video, crowd, weather... ;)
Seems to me that prior to some of the original "Hansen Dam" threads, a lot of these modelers sailed by themselves. Those threads and this one, have brought these modelers together, and at some point there may be enough people connected via this thread, or group sailing days to create a small club.
If for no other reason than that, this thread is a good way to "help" find, "help" organize, and "help" recruit local model sailors.

I think this thread is good reading. I am glad Kmot takes the time to photograph and video the time at the lake. Any time you get to see an actual run of a boat it gives some ideas to other boaters. Dock talk is the general boating information forum and thris thread defenitely falls into that. If you dont like a particular thread you dont have to read it or even check on it. Again thanks to all who post photos and reports of the boating scene in the forums. That is one of the reasons I took up the RC boats after racing cars and flying planes. Kmot, keep the info and pictures coming :) :) :)

I do live in LA County, but had it not been for the post on this forum, I would have been hard pressed to find a "legal" place to run my boats. They might as well have been 2,000 miles away, because I wouldn't have known anything about Hanson Dam or Lake Balboa.

Generation Gap! Hmmm that gets me thinking, lets find out how old everyone is?
I`m 27
Fleetmaster is 25
If we didn`t live on the other side of the world we`d both be there to use our boats not only that Mrs Fleetmaster and little 3yo Miss fleetmaster would come to watch the boats(and hopefully bring supplies :p ),it looks like a great facility....recovery boat and all!

If I still lived in "The OC" I would've made a trip up to meet fellow modelers. However, since I now live many hours NORTH of that location.... I might still go but it would be only AFTER I finish my first real waterborne RC. Need to take something to play with! :D

Today was a hot, but none the less pleasant day at Hansen Lake. In part becaue there was a pretty steady 5 mph wind blowing across the lake. Even blew my shade canopy into the water. Fortunately for me it was only two legs that went in before we caught it!
I met a new member, a fella named "Vic" who had shown up happenstance to run his sailboat. He knows nothing of this thread or the group. I explained to him we meet every Thursday and he was excited about that. This was only his second time running his sailboat. He had a problem though, with his Futaba Attack radio. The sail control servo stopped working. It was later determined his Tx had malfunctioned. Further questioning found that Hobby Town had modified the new Tx to install a ratchet on the sail control stick. Guess which gimbal failed? We talked him into returning it to Hobby Town and having them fix the radio. Also, discussing the Spektrum DX6 with him it sounded like he was going for one of those instead.
Steve Ciambrone brought out his Revell Type 72 sub for its maiden voyage. It performed well, but Steve wants a little more power for the dynamic diving function. It looked very scale on the water, although the wind was pushing the sail over fairly hard when broadsided. There was a moment when we thought a large catfish was going to have the sub for a snack.
Speaking of catfish, this 12" or so cat came cruising into the model boat harbor like nothing was unusual. I had my 24" Cyborg Shark with me today. I put the Cyborg into the water and started to follow the cat. He got nervous at the sight of the shark and headed for depper waters, lol!!!
I also brought my Villain EX for some video work. But I forgot to erase the old footage. I found out after the fact so I did not get very much footage this time, but I did get enough to make a short video. That will be done later. I also came with 8 batteries. I was loaded for bear! I got four long, 30 minute or so runs on the Villain today. With the water cooling system, after a 30 minute run the motors were 98*F.
Two other Irregular members who are sailboaters were there. Excellent sailing conditions for them today. Lots of the other Irregulars were missing today. Probably due to post # 77. ;)

Great video! Nice to see an RC sub in action. Great place, Hansen Dam, to run it as the water is so clear. Thanks.
