Well guys ,,I finally managed to get my long waited for special bevel gears and have finally found a little time to start on the new gear boxes for the next step of my long winding road V-22 project. For those of you that don't know me ,,,I am V-22 nuts (well I am just plain nuts also ,,thought I better say that before those of you who know me did ) I have been working with the idea since 1988 and have had various types of test beds.

You can go here V22 60 degree transition (http://www.scalerchelis.com/gallery/V22-Tilt-rotor-and-old-helis/Clip17) to see the last attempt I did at conversion to airplane mode. You can see the bird go to 60 degree position and then climb as I near the trees and US highway and then I panic ,,thinking I am over the road and hurriedly go back to heli mode and then the fast back to heli mode and climb and stall move one loosened nacelle /gearbox (because of a broken mount bolt ) back about 3 degrees more than the other side . With all this back thrust and control inputs going on to level it out ,,it puts the bird into a flat spiral that I couldn't over come with the controls.
Or you can go to my website to veiw all the old testbeds as well as some other guys projects that I have been in contact with over the yrs.
Welcome to R/C VTOL's (http://www.geocities.com/v22chap/vtol)

Here are a few pix of the gears and the gearbox in lite ply as a test fitting process so as to save the carbon fiber until I get it all layed out like I want.I am trying to keep everything compact and balanced around the cross shaft and narrow profiled so it will fit inside a scale looking nacelle.
I also hope that the double clamp system I have on this gearbox will not allow it to slip like the last setup did. This one has two 90 degree opposing 3mm setscrews that clamp against the cross shaft tube wall and the cross shaft bearing holder that fits inside the cross shaft tube .These two are on the outside of the clamp .Then there is one 3mm pinch bolt on the other side (inner side ,next to the wing )

This will be a long project as my wife has decided to go back to college to get another degree (to make more money to support my stupid hobby :),,,, )
So I have become chief cook and bottle washer, kid taxi driver and such so she can do her home work !!!
All in all though I am really excited for her as it takes a lot of courage and fortitude to return to college for 3 yrs of really tough training ( BSN -nursing degree and then Mid wifery college ) at the yng age of 48
enjoy
Larry

Hi Larry,
What do you use the extra axis (the one going from the small bevel gear) for? is it to connect between the two engines at the wing tips? If so, is it the same axis that turns the engines between heli and plane mode?
Regards,
Eyal.

Larry, I am so happy to see you finally got the gear issue worked out. Till you try these large size scale birds you can't appreciate the work that goes into them. It all looks so simple once it is finished. Is the plastic gear a easily replaced stock item? Looks familiar. I assume it was just the 2 steel pinions you had custum made. I admire both you and your wife for the decision to go and get that degree. Tough on both of you, especially her. Still I am sure it will pay back in spades. I am to lazy to do it. I applaude you both. It's good to see the Master of the Scale Osprey is back at it. Break is over.

Thanks for the kind words Rudy ,, the large white gear is a 95 T minature aircraft driven tail / main drive gear ,,but the bevel part of that white gear is one of the custom made ones. I needed to do away with the driven tail of the MA gear and also be able to match the steel bevel,, so they made both. I had a total of 4 gears made ( 2 sets and this is the problem I had with the company )
Hope to keep at it ,,but it will not be easy as things just more important than the V-22 come first and she appreciates it. ;) :D
