As I understand it, different radio brands use different terminologies here.

The result that most are looking for is softening control response close to centre: moving the stick some gives you a little response, moving it some more gives you some more response, moving it still some more gives you a lot more response. Make sense?

Whch is probably what positve expo should mean. My futaba calls that negative expo tho.

Positive vs negative Expo...?

The short answer is: More or less (positive vs negative) "twitchiness" of control movement.

Quote from Sherman L. Knight's article Programming The Jr X-347 Computer Radio:
http://www.nesail.com/articles.php?PHPSESSID=57cc59c8136e04b66cc90d71790 c8b3d

"Dual Rate/Exponential Rate:

Who needs dual rates when you have exponential mixing? Exponential mixing takes the twitchiness out of stick center. I use it in all functions, especially the elevator to smooth the flight of the aircraft. Although the flight of the aircraft is smoothed out, similar to what dual rates would do, you still have full throw on all of your control surfaces at full stick movement. This is something that I would fully encourage you to experiment with."

JR positive = Futaba/Hitec/Airtronics negative = softening of control response round the centre.

I've never met anyone who wants the opposite (controls made more twitchy with very small stick movements) though it's possible to set it up that way if you want (JR negative expo, Futaba etc positive expo).

I've also never understood what it's so often compared with dual rates, which is nothing like it. I find DR very useful for test flights when I'm not yet sure if I have enough control deflection on a new plane or way too much. Expo is no help at all there.

In many respects, expo does away the need for dual rates as you are less apt to overcontrol with expo dialed in yet you can get the maximum throw if you find it necessary without having to hit a switch to change rates.
