Hi, just thought id thro this ideas i had out,, i was thinking the other day about trying to make a rc space ship, like the ones seen on the stargate series , i was wonder if a simple balsa frame covered in light covering, with the inside hollow to fill up with helium balloons would have the lifting power needed, any ideas??? ill draw up a plan soon

Sounds like it will work, many of the commercial providers will make custom shaped blimps like 747's and coke bottles, so your 'cover' over a baloon container should work too. The only problem will be making it too small.

*thinks* Well, you could try using a hoverdisc along with two pontoons *inflated engine pods aft of the main fuse which would be of thin foam.* I think you can get plain *silver only* hoverdiscs from Draganfly.com still.. *shrugs* been a while since I went by their site. Here's their web addy. wwwdraganfly.com

i was kinda thnking about some sort of hover motor to fly it,, and just use the helium as a lightening sorce to aid the lift, lots to think , plenty options

hi Like the idea had a similar one for a Thunderbird 2 some time ago its a natural LTA convert other materials to consider to are depron foam or fan fold foam..............I assume you are talking about the transports....another might be Moya the leviathan ship from Farscape.
Ive added pics and links elsewhere in this thread to SKYCAT and Skykitten the test model of this hybrid airship . Are you familiar with it....take a look ...................http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=446846
if your on broad band E mail me and I can send you a video of it flying  :D :D outdoors.....you'll see why I thought about TB2 as a suitable subject :D you can stretch the propotions in your favour withh these shapes to get better overall lift.Generally the larger the gas volume you displace the easier the job gets lifting/balancing the rest.
skycat is a lifting body design at speed so buoyancy is actually such that under full load it would sink without thrust.

hi Ronmiester....I put up the pick of the ducted fan giant TB2 just to show that even thats possible with the shape from the back you can see the actual huge outlet pipe..the motor was something like a Rossi or Irving 2 stroke.
I also sent the video of Skycat Skykitten to Pitviper.to show just how TB2 shaped the real thing is and how well it flies.

Gerry Anderson is the man who invented the kids puppet SF series in the 60s Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Space 1999 and a whole host others followed if your looking for fantastic models hes your man  the Japanese go mental over his stuff.
A flying TB 2 model is guaranteed to put a :D smile on thousands of faces worldwide if its true to the original design :D the feel good factor asspociated with TB2 is hard to explain unless you grew up watching it ;)

I spent some time working out how it might be done at various volumes in scale and how with quite modest changes in proportions it could be made to work more easily. All that was pre high tech motors and cells..so its got to have got easier. the trick is to use reversible wake thrusters for the main power like the Skykitten but to have a ducted fan set up in the side intakes terminating in simple /light rotary louvred exhaust vents well forward of the stubby wings to aid manoeuvring/thrust. Get it right and they can rotate 180deg + in the vertical plane and vector for or aft by almost as much..say 140.
Controling that lot plus a reserve emergency channel for let down would take quite a complex Tx Rx set up but still achievable given modern gear.
The best version is the original in that it has the most airship like profile and the wing-lets are a sensible size even if to scale....my biggest problem was going to be storage space.

I want to get back into large blimps!

How big is large ron ?
My Tb2 ideas started working best at about ten foot length and up to 16ft ..the displacement is larger than a conventional shape for its length and you can go up on width and ht quite bit without it showing. :)
the biggest challenge is maintaining a D X section envelope to fit in the perimeter frame ......the original models cargo pod and a bit more forward and aft.

How about going to Space in a Blimp?

Take a look at this... is incredible....!!!
Specially a video named "There and Back Again" with a full footage from takeoff... climbimg... the bursting of the envelope in space... reentry in the atmosfere... descending...and landing... at a very very unexpensive cost... (bye bye NASA)... so Simple...

I hadnt seen that but using ballons /airships to lift your payload to the edge of space makes a lot of sence in energy terms ......its also a lot safer than strapping yourself and a million lbs of liquid rocket fuel to a couple of solid rockets that you cannot switch off and getting half squashed on the way up :p

Guga have you seen the prototype Strat sat blimp model ATG/Skycat developed...its shown best in a PDF file along with the work they did on the Skykitten two hover cushion work?

If you've the connection speed I can send you some vid footage of the Skykitten 1 in action .....its a bit like watching a fish moving through water :D
