View Full Version : Question Wint Tip Design --What's better?

I have built a wing designed for a slow flyer. It will go on my Slow Stick, and if proven to fly well, I will design a fuselage and empennage for it.
My question is regarding wing tip design. Is the flat ended wing tip as seen in the two pictures below adequate for a slow flyer, or do I need to slope it out for it to fly better?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the help,
Frank

The flat version is perfectly adequate.
Wingtips aren't anything to get excited about until the plane's performance gets out of the extremely low Reynolds Number ranges typical of this type of plane.

Sparky Paul,
Thanks for the quick repsonse. I'll press on with my build as is then.
Reynolds Number -I had to look that up.
Thanks,
Frank

As Dave Thornburg said "Wing tips are like lawyers. They can't make you money but they can cut your losses."

For low speed planes, the best function of a wingtip is to protect the end ribs from getting crunched in a cartwheel landing!

And with an airfoil like that, most of the drag comes from the wing section anyway.

A wing tip helps keep the covering from pulling the last wing rub inwards when it shrinks. A concave last rib looks terrible..

Don't worry now about the tip design!!! Almost all of the wing design depends on aspect ratio and airfoil but the tiny bit of the design depends the tip. First improve your design effort for airfoil, aspect ratio, taper and washout because they are much more important than tip design. Later you could improve the tip design effort.
