Jim:

Great Idea!

For me, any month that works for you. I'd say sooner rather than later when it gets hotter. Perhaps keep open the option of repeating later if the first time is a super success.

For me, Saturday or Sunday, either would be fine.

Notice, I don't need much notice. A week at most.

I'd want to either bring something or to pay something predetermined.

I'd suggest a simple schedule. Just a start time, a time to go home, and a time to eat!

Hope the response is phenomenal, as is the event itself.

This is just me, but you *might* have a hard time planning it more than a few days in advance. Maybe a tentative date and then check weather/launchcode for a "GO" around Wednesday. A windy/rainy day would sure put a damper on things.

I've considered that , and I agree! Weather is my main concern for planning this. Maybe we can try it early in the year without the cookout, then as the weather patterns settle into a summertime mode, we can try it again with the cookout. I looking for input from yall on this. Thanks.

Suggest you PM Gravitygust about this. We've not head anything from him here for some time now.

I'm hoping the weather is good and that it's still on. The earlier plan was for Gravitygust to give a go/no go decision on Thursday.

I'm still here. I PM'd G_Wright tonight. Plans are the same pending weather confirmation. All I can do is go by the available forecast' and hope for the best. :) I hope by Thursday I'll be able to get a PM out to all that have responded. I have a list of names.

Looks like we are at maximum capacity for the Sunday flyday. Confirmation will be tomorrow according to launch code forcast for winds. If the wind forcast is unfavorable, I'll probably wait until Summer to reschedule. I will send PM's to all that have said they want to come. Thanks to all for your interest in the event.

Interesting concept, "capacity", at that place! :)

Yea, there is a practical limit to how many people can park in their back yard proper. But your cooker is Huge! And the flying field huger still. If a person could drive across the field, there could easily be separate flying sessions on each of 4 corners of the field, er.... Golf Course! Yes, frequency control....

I understand the need to keep the group a reasonable size and reasonably clustered together for maximum fun and interaction.

My fingers are crossed that you will like what Launch Code says and the weather does. I'm on vacation this week, and would like to finish the week accordingly.

Thanks to Rob's frequency list sticky and our being considerate in buying equipment and such, we really have few frequency conflicts at our Renegades gatherings that I've been to. You might want to print off the frequency list for reference when we come, hopefully this Sunday. As they arrive, perhaps let people highlight and/or mark up their entry, if things have changed or if they only brought some of their planes. Let the people sharing frequencies police themselves. It's a thought, anyway. Your fly-in, your rules!

Yes I love my "don't know, don't care!" frequency! :) But we are limited to flying a maximum of 40 of them at one time and place. Not a problem so far. :)

I'm awaiting final word from Jim about this event. As I'm sure are others.

I could easily see his decision going either way from the weather forecasts I've seen for Sunday. Wind - not bad, but temperatures - not quite what we might hope for. His decision, of course!

But I hate to think of things getting put off till it's really hot out. I personally mostly have more difficulty with too hot than too cool. And from too much sun. My peeling from late last week's DBPS lunch-time flying has just about all healed up :)

Speaking (off-topic) with dleviner today at Rick's place, I learned that there are two more DBPSs being prepared for the fray!

I'm watching the launch code forecast right now and waiting until I can see beyond 12 noon Sunday. If it gets no more than the current 9 mph forecast, it will be a go. I will send PM's tonight with a go or no go. The forcast is only a guideline, and conditions could be worse or better. Just no way to be sure!

I'm glad it's ON. Hope the RSVPs are coming in fast and affirmative! I'm sure looking forward to being there! :)

I did not see any mention of bringing something to pass around to go along with the chicken, but I would certainly be glad to do so.

I looked at launch code for a "better" location than Huntsville, but found none closer to New Hope.

So I went to my other favorite, Weatherunderground.com for Sunday, looking at several cities moving from West to East:

Time_____AM PM PM PM
_________ 9_ 12_ 3_ 6
City______MPH
Florence__ 1_ 2_ 2_ 0
Decatur__ 1_ 3_ 4_ 2
Madison__ 2_ 3_ 4_ 2
Huntsville_ 3_ 6_ 6_ 5
Huntsville_ 3_ 8_ 8_ 5 (Launch Code)
New Hope_ 2_ 4_ 6_ 3
Scottsboro 0_ 1_ 4_ 6

So that suggests that the winds in New Hope *might* be a little lower than in Huntsville for Sunday's flying. But weather is certainly an inexact science. Guess we'll fly in what we get and be thankful for it!

ChuckPierce
Mar 24, 2006, 09:56 AM
9 12 3 6 Time
1 2 2 0 Florence
1 3 4 2 Decatur
2 3 4 2 Madison
3 6 6 5 Huntsville
(3 8 8 5 Huntsville Launch Code)
2 4 6 3 New Hope
0 1 4 6 Scottsboro

Help a newbie decode this... It looks like wind speed, on 3-hour centers? Starting when?

Sorry if that was confusing. Past experience has shown that things all lined up and spaced out neatly when submitted here get all jamed together as you finally see it. Guess I could have used underscores to enforce the spacing.

I just redid it and am not sure that I improved things much - and the wind forecast has probably changed by now anyway! Oh :censored:

By now you've seen the RSVP list. A bunch of the regulars are not there, in either column. Surprising. I guess New Hope is too far away for some folks, and/or there are schedule conflicts, of course.

Jim at one time mentioned that 20 total people were possible based on PMs of interest. That means several family members were considering coming. It should be nice to meet some of the family. Neither Pat nor Scott are coming with me. Now if the event was being held in a shopping mall instead of a golf course!....

I'm bringing my SS and my DBPS Dove. I'd like to have something else re-flyable by then, but not sure that any of the candidates will be ready. I've been busy vacationing this past week, out of town and locally, shopping at HobbyTownUSA and Rick's, shooting the rifles with Scott, and suddenly am way behind in housework.

But looking forward to being there, flying some, and seeing a lot of others fly.

Jim:

Thanks So Much! Great location! Great food! Great comeraderie! Great hosts! Gusty changeable winds!

Some photos below.

The downlink stuff was on an AP plane where the pilot could watch what the camera saw from a small screen attached to his transmitter to fly the plane without being able to see it and to frame the still shots. I was amazed to see him fly a Slo-V-like plane so high and so far downwind while doing his photo mission. It was literally a spec in the sky. They also had a second ground receiving station with a larger computer screen. Mrbisset will post some photos. Either he'll let us know about them, or I'll add a link here when I find them. They were quite impressive from just what I saw on the real-time monitor screen.

Jim W's fff plane got blown into a (magnetic) tree. These guys are really serious about retrieving planes before the LiPos get too far run down. Score: Plane 1, Tree Zero! Chainsaw, don't leave home without it! :)

A lot of time today was spent enjoying the sun, second-guessing the random wind gusts, and talking about what else? And did I mention we had great chicken!? and a sweet dog to share the bones with!

Sorry there were so many folks new to me that I missed many names!

JohnieRocket maidened his DBPS today. I'll let him tell more about it.

I've been researching windy-day planes. Clearly I was not prepared for today's changing weather. Every time the winds died down and I went to the flightline, or just after I launched, the winds immediately came back up and took over. How do they know!? About 4:30 the winds finally died down some and became more steady. That's when I got in most of my flying today.

Thanks so much, Jim, for having us all over!

For those of us who couldn't come, thanks very much for the great pictures. Mo pictures fo the chicken though. Maybe that would have been too much.

What is the pretty biplane in the picture titled "Curse You Red Barron, sorry it was too windy to fly it" ? The tail lines look like a Nieuport but the struts don't match. The front end and struts looks like a Sopwith Camel, which was Snoopy's airplane. Are the ailerons functional? The wing doesn't have much dihedral for rudder only turns.

A big thanks to Jim W, Mark and LouAnn for their magnificent hospitality! How many hosts do you know who not only opens their property to a bunch of flyers they don't even know, but cooks up a fantastic feast for all to enjoy, and even cuts down a tree to retrieve a plane? :) It was great to meet everyone - I hope our paths cross again sometime soon.
What is the pretty biplane in the picture titled "Curse You Red Barron, sorry it was too windy to fly it" ? That would be Jerry's plane and, since he doesn't frequent the forums, I'll try to answer. IIRC, that's the SIG Bristol Scout
Bristol Scout (http://www.sigmfg.com/cgi-bin/dpsmart.exe/ProductsV4.html?L+Sig+hmry3408+_Ddp_5fSearch1_02B_ 2dPlaneRC_26Bristol_01Search_02Index_01)
He struggled with that plane for some time before finally getting it to fly decent. I don't recall what all he changed to get it to fly, but it was a real head-scratcher. Fortunately, Jerry's the kind of guy who embraces that kind of challenge - I'd have given up.
