I guess I should know, but I don't. What is SEFF again? Do you have a link?

Dave, this is Jeff Meyers event at Mac Hodges field.
Jeff was one of the guys with the camera crew at Carter's Dam
and Mac the one with the B-29 and X1 on the CD I burned for you.
Much of the footage was at SEFF last year.
If you go I will try to prompt a Slinger combat slot as there are might be a few there.
To all, it is a great event with good food, good people, some good deals and most everything electric that you see in the mags.

Don,
Thanks for the link and info. Looks like a fun time. I just started the process of getting a weekend kitchen pass from the missus. Are you taking your wife, or is this a guys only event? How many days are you going?

I guess if you really want to go all 3 days and will work 4 hours a day in the events, if I read it right, they will help make your trip worthwhile:

Randy Moore and I are already registered. We plan to go down on Friday, and return Sunday. He will probably do more flying than I. It'll be his 3rd or 4th trip down, my first.

If the field isn't too muddy or soft, Randy Moore and I plan to park my motorhome on the field for a couple of nights. (Leave HSV Friday AM and leave SEFF Sunday AM)
If any of you get down, look for an Adventurer Winnebago motorhome with a Honda Civic tow-behind. Stop in, sit and chat a while. I'll have a refrig operating, so should have some cold refreshment available.

Jim,
Here's what I posted to the NASF list. I keep forgetting that the participants in the ARCR forum and the NASF distribution lists are not totally equivalent. My apologies for my oversight. And, my regrets to the NASF guys that have now seen this twice. I don't enjoy duplicate email either.

I'll let the others speak for themselves. This was my first trip to SEFF, but my expectations had been somewhat "preconditioned" by listening to Randy Moore's description of his two previous visits. First, I observed very few sailplanes actually flying. The few I did see were high-powered hot-liners doing most un-sailplane acts. Although there was a LOT of lift all around in Saturday's "hard sun, clear" conditions, I did not see any soaring flight at all. Lots of foamies, lots of 3D flying, lots of parkflyers. Saw one EPP(?) foam electric-launch model, about 2m span with an high-thrust line pusher motor fly during "Open flying", but no power-off flying. That was a bit of a disappointment for me. During the awards ceremony, they said that there were about 30 models entered into the two sailplane event on Thursday. I dont' think I saw any of them, tho'.
I saw one Sailaire that had been converted to electric launch. It looked well-used. There were a couple of DLG's, maybe 1.5m span. I didn't recognize the designs. I think all three were on display "For Sale".
The flight demonstration at noon on Saturday was impressive, but mostly all electric powered models. 3-D's, coverted gassie scale models for WWII fighters, FAI stunt patterns and the like. Mac Hodges flew his gas-powered scale B-29 of 55+ lbs in the tradtitional launch of the X-1 model and then some most un-scale like maneuvers, rolls, loops, spins, and inverted flight. And, if you haven't heard the news, they have now constructed a turbo-prop engine from some of the legacy of the small turbines used in the model jets. They had this motor on a large sorta-scale aerobatic design - Extra, Edge, Yak, Sukhoi type. There was an extended aerobatic routine flown with this model that was most impressive. For you hot-doggers out there, they mentioned that it only cost around $10,000. Just don't hesitate or be indecisive on the sticks.
My $.02 since you asked. How about the rest of you guys?

SEFF was way cool. I could post some of my pics (and may later on), but if you go to the SEFF 2006 Forum, you'll get to see plenty of pics/discussion. Here's the link:

Needless to say, you've gotta make it down there at least once! :D

The latest issue of QuietFlyer has a 32-page supplement about SEFF. They said 310 pilots registered. The pictures showed some nice helicopters and ducted fan jets (Me262 and others). They said there were many more "real" airplanes this year. I assume that meant balsa since they continued the sentence with how many more foamies there were last year. They said 75% of the aircraft used CC ESCs. Wish I could have gone.

Tom,
I looked closely at the background hoping to find a glimps of any of the renegades. Didn't see anybody.
