Tim,

O scale train figures are what you are looking for. As for the paint question, you can paint over a latex wall paint with a spray enamel if you are looking for a crazed paint effect. Enamel will crack and lift any latex paint.

No specific recommendations on the crew, but it should be easy- that's the same as 'O' scale. Go to the train shop!

I buy my 1:48 scale figures at a couple of places on the net. Here's a site that has the best prices I've found so far.
http://www.gohobbies.com/
go to O scale trains page then use the bottom search box to choose figures.

See what I done with one of Phil's vac-u-tow kits at

Tim - I don't own stock in Life Like but if you take a 1/48 scale rule you will find all the people are 6ft or less. If you ever build in 1/24 there G scale people are 6' or less - they make a track maintaniance crew that if you remove picks and shovels the can pull hawser lines and look real, they also have a traincrew that has potential too. Usally come 5 per pack for about 9 dollars pre-painted.

That's what I use on the Vac-u -Tug along with Blue Jacket 1/48 scale fittings. Can dress that boat up real nice.

Tim,
As an O Gauge Railroader also, I can give you some good ideas. If you want some highly detailed pre painted figures, the recommendation would be Artistta (www.arttista.com) or Preiser. Both could be found in good model railroad hobby shops.

Also for 1:48 people and lots of other items, you can check out Scenic Express - www.scenicexpress.com

Actually, here is the link to their O Gauge figures, and it looks like they offer all the types mentioned above.

The "Express" figures are also quite good and less costly then Arttista or Preiser.

Hope that helps. Now what I need are 1:12 figures for my Dumas Trojan with realism to match my O Gauge folks....
