I read somewhere that a JR radio can be connected to the computer through the microphone jack via trainer cable. Is this true? Will I be able to control FMS and other free sims? I just don't want to risk destroying my radio trying it so I thought I'd ask first.

You would be better off purchasing / making a simple interface rather than shove 9.6v up the mic socket of your sound card !
FMS (and Clearview) support PIC-SERIAL interfaces, which are cheaper than the "standard" USB transmitter interfaces. That said, having a USB transmitter interface that emulates a standard Windows Joystick is more flexable and supported by a wider range of applications.
