I recently installed a Norvel AME .061 into a 1/2A Piper Cub. I tried breaking in the engine recently, but to no success. I tried both hand turning and using a starter (sparingly, of course). the fuel i used was the recommended 15%. Also the power supply was good, and i used the recommended starting settings. If anyone could give me some advice on starting this engine, that would be great.

Make sure the voltage is 3v or slightly above. Make sure crankcase doesnt have any excess fuel in it. Use 20% castor based fuel with 10% nitro. Once running rich let it warm-up with glo clip on for 30 seconds, adjust needle on subsequent runs. will take a couple of tanks to run better. Always run pressurised, if tank level with needle use half tank to begin with. After run in 15-20% nitro can be used if you need it. I run one in last week when air temp was about plus 2 degrees C and she was flick starting in half an hour (careful use of electric starter to begin with). I have used both Russian and AP versions and love them, bit noisy and messy but great little engines. EDIT: see later post ...that should be AMPS not volts

Arrow 5, are you sure you meant 3 volts? Last I heard 1 1/2 volt is what's needed. Everything else you advised I sure would agree with (you're not a glow head manufacturer are you?? Just kidding.).

Hi rotcdet90, I'm no expert, but I've been running two AP Wasps. Here's a link to another forum where someone else had problems starting his AP Wasp:-
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3662691/tm.htm
I've made some suggestions there as well. I'm pretty happy with my wasps; hopefully, once you get used to yours, you'll be just as pleased.
Regards
Justin

Sturm;Yep, my error :( I`ve just re-read the instructions (always helps !) It should be AMPS on your panel, NOT VOLTS !! If you dont want to risk it at 3amps increase it up a little at a time till the engine pops. Have you got the instruction sheet that came with the engine? Wish I DID have shares in the plug industry ( and props !). Edit: I`ve just read the posts on "the other place" ..its all there, Oops, thinks, must dash out and buy shares in glo-heads. ? How many do I owe you for suggesting volts ?????

At first putting a drop or two of fuel into the chamber helped. Honestly, after I got my power panel and 1/2a starter, it's started in the first few turns. That 1/2a starter is the best money you can spend if you have a Norvel =/ Man, when it gets going though....

I ve been running norvels long before they were norvel, They are a pain in the A** to break in especially if you are finger propping them (use a wood and definetly not a CF or apc style at least for break in) I personally use 35% nitro and they love it good Idle and throttle responce (for the carb versions) however the ceramic hard coated cylender wil last forever once properly broken in (8 gallons on one of my CL combat wings, no lie) I use a standard sullivan electric starter with my RC versions and have had no problems ie. broken cranks or bent rods. Just make sure that it is not flodded. Base line needel setting should be approx 3.5 turns out (for inital start) this setting works well for me all over the U.S. and Canada. Also run the "Hot" plug if your engine did not come with it, most engines that have been shipped with in the last 6 or so years has it but some times there is a slip up. As far as the low nitro--10-15 % they will run but not as well. Use Castor oil these little engines will wear out if over heated for prolonged periods. Synthetic oils burn off too easy thus letting the heat stay in the engine castor dosent burn and carries the heat away (slimy airplane but worth it)

Well, the one on Sig right now is:

The one I have is:

Looks like they just change the name? Or maybe I just ordered a Sullivan. I don't remember :(

Well for that price I don't care what they call, I'll take it, that is almost $10 cheaper than Sig's

Yah, I'm a pretty frugal shopper (read: broke).
rotcdet90: As long as your tank is lined up with the center of your carb. Have you tried raising your fuel tank a little bit? Or starting it sideways (cylinder up), then turning it right side up (cylinder down) to see if it continues to run? I've heard the Norvel motors are sensitive to fuel pressure, I haven't experienced any problems yet with mine. I've got it mounted upside down on my zero, we'll see if that gives us any problems and if I fix any problems that might help you I'll let you know.
