View Full Version : Discussion Stretched Majestic

In my never ending attempt to complicate things I know very little about - it occured to me that stretching the Majestic wing may compensate for the "extra" weight of using the stock fiberglass boom. I am thinking of stretching the wing to about 118" by adding bays to the main panel and adding one tip panel bay with the curved wingtip. I haven't calculated the increase in area, but figure it would have to help by reducing the wing loading. I would increase the V tail span as noted in the Drela suggestions for increased performance. I am also removing the camber in the airfoil.
Any thoughts on this?

I am thinking of stretching the wing to about 118" by adding bays to the main panel and adding one tip panel bay with the curved wingtip. That should work well. But I would do the stretch by adding more bays at the tip. That's a lot simpler, and it will give a better poly layout. Note that stretching the span like this will proportionately increase the spar load, so I wouldn't do this unless you also add CF spar reinforcements.

Should the CF be used with the stock spruce spars or would hard balsa and CF be sufficient? Would it be best to use CF and spruce on the main panel and hard Balsa and CF on the outer panels? Would just hard balsa spars on the outer tips be sufficient with the CF reinforcment in the inner panels?
Would adding the extra area just at the tips sufficiently lower the wing loading vs. adding a bay or two in the main panels also? Much more area would be gained in the main panel.

This completely depends on how thick the added carbon is.
