Hi all
I'd like to wish everyone a happy chinese new year. and have a good holiday.
We only had a few pops here, since fireworks are banned, but we still had fun.
Happy chinese new year, its now the year of the gou (dog)
Owen
(Apologies for the slight off topic nature of the thread, but after seeing the singapore heli jamboree.... a raptor 90 with hundreds, i MEAN 100s of huge firecrackers all hung on the fuse hanging below the heli being fired while it flies around is a sight to behold, so I can now see a link between New year -> fire crackers -> heli with firecrackers -> RC , yep im therefore not off topic :D) actally, have a look at the china forum, lots of happy new year... LOL

The only downside to the Chinese new year is that most of my suppliers are now silent :(
Oh well ... so long as they're enjoying themselves, they don't get many breaks.

The Year of the Dog... In this forum shouldn't it be the Fying Dog?

Fying dog? Wow, that's a new one ;)
In celebration of the new year, I'm about to go out and test fly my wingy-jetty-GWS-brushless-lipo setup....
Just before having the sand-down and gear fitted.

On the flight deck, awaiting to fill up and being cleared for launch

Okay, here's a flight report.... it didn't fly too well.
Problems -
1. On glide, nose down, trim up and it glides nice
2. On throttle it pitches up sharply and starts flopping
3. Weak flaperon response at low speeds (despite being 30mm wide surfaces on a 200mm chord wing)
Solutions -
- A bit more nose-weight *mutter mutter* (no matter how long your nose, you need it another 20mm longer)
- Some more reflex in the foil (should hopefully help the stability)
- Some more motor upthrust (help stop the nose from piking up under power)
..... that should suffice... oh, the 1 flight I had, the landing resulted in
- broken prop *sigh*
- join between the two wing halves cracked *curse*
- sheared off a landing skid (no problem there, 10 seconds with CA).

Paul,
did you take any video of the flight?? when you say "starts flopping" could it be the onset of a dutch roll? Perhaps at high angles of attack the wing could be blanketing the fins? just some thoughts
PS: did you use carbon strip top and bottom of the wing?

Yes, I CF's both sides. My normal use of CF tow is on my DLG's, so I know the weakness of not doing both sides.
No video of the flight... was pretty horrid anyhow. I'll try fix everything back up tommorow and add another 10g or so of lead into the nose. Probably didn't help that I put my elevator servo directly onto the h-stab (didn't feel like messing with routing the leads up and around.

The wings dont look that severely swept that a dutch roll would become a problem. I think its really good to just move the CG forward first. you could have the CG right on the equib point or slightly behind so the wing tends to want to flip around but the elev is stopping it from doing it completely. Mayb you should try inverted flying. If you need up elev, then your CG is definately too far back.
Good luck on your next flight.
And we finally got the fire crackers going, our dog was absolutely terrified by the sound.

Owen,
Yes, it could be "quite close - but on the tail heavy side". When I get into the 'mood' I'll get back and fix things up, mostly the wing-center join needs the attention, I knew it was too weak to start with. Also need to find a way of preventing the dreaded prop-break, perhaps a change of motor to a B20-40-18L with a 5x5 :D

Plane some washout on the wingtips and move the CG foward. Its very short coupled and almost a flying wing so couple that with some motor thrust line adjustments through or ahead of the wing N.P and it should get it rockin and rollin.
Just thinkin out aloud here...(so I could be completely wrong :D )
Maybe taper the ailerons - so when you add reflex you automatically increase the washout on the tips.
Maybe raise the motor up and adjust the thrust line from there. Where it is now itsacting straight through the wing and is a long way below the tailplane (relative to everything)
cheers, Shawn

That looks a lot like a pushycat Paul , was that your inspiration or is it another of your own designs ?

Dingo,
Nope, but if I had to say where I got my inspiration from, it'd be from things like the Estes Centurion rocket-glider.
Damn, looks really similar though, perhaps it's time for me to alter to phase 2 of my idea.
Paul.
