I could use some help with aileron design/size. I don’t know what might work best: strip or barn door ailerons.

I’m building a high-wing, trainer-style aircraft to be used for aerial photography. I’m shooting for an AUW of about 50oz. (with camera). I have two EPS foam wing cores---11-1/2” constant-chord, Clark-Y airfoil, 64” wingspan (each core is 32”).

My first thought was to add 1” x 30” strip ailerons to each side. This would add 1” to the chord and make the total wing area 800 sq. in. But then I wondered if I should cut out barn door-style ailerons of approximately 3” x 15” each. This would retain the 11-1/2” chord and make the total wing area 736”.

Any thoughts as to the merits of either of these choices? Are the dimensions for either okay?

Thanks.

If weight and/or simplicity is your forte, go with the strip ailerons.

Either would work.. the strips would be simpler to install.
But dihedral in place of ailerons would be better.
AP planes must be stable, not manuverable.
Lots of dihedral will keep it on heading easier.
For that span, about 1-3/4" dihedral on each side would be fine.
I have an AP plane about that size, which flies quite well rudder only.. I can turn off the elevator in flight..

Both will work, strip ailerons might be easier to make. Change in wing area will not be significant. Barn-doors have a longer moment arm and they don't need to be quite that big - something like 2" x 10" or 12" should be enough.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Hi Jack,

I΄m planning to build a AP plane as well, would you mind to send me your dwg file to take a look? thanks (MSN: blanco-ignacio@hotmail.com).

The only think I΄m planning is to add a servo to rotate de camera from 0deg(horizontal) to 90deg(Vertical) from the back of the plane.
