Thought you might be interested in the maiden flight of my warbirds F 18 ducted fan.

Incidently www.warbirds-rc.com were so impressed with the video they posted it on their web site !!!!! :p :p

Here is the Rc groups Gallery link to the video.

Enjoy :) :) :)

Woah, really flies like a full size jet, just faster :D
Always like the colour scheme of the blue angels.

Keep up the good work.

Im still amazed by how those little blades can generate thrust. The most ive done was get an 80mm computer fan and stick that onto my dremel at 20% power and blew things all over the place.

Hi joel, i fly in the park south of the river near wireless hill. Tomkins park i think its called. Ive heard that electrics are allowed there, but dont take my word for it. We just havent been told to leave yet. :D

Otherwise its just any park thats at least an oval size. (3D planes are great as park fliers arnt they at 4oz/sqft)

Now there's an idea. Dremel fan instead of a ducted fan. Need a lot of lipos to make 240 volts but !!!!! Keep enjoying the hobby Owen. I started when I was 12. Bit older now though !!!!

Have seen Mavric fly it at our local park and all I can say is the video doesn't do it much justice.

Mav:
By the way I cooked my speedy last night  & now burnt my hand this morning :censored: at work with an oxy torch won't be able to fly for a couple of days .....can you see a pattern starting here.

G'day Mav,

Great looking bird. I got a grey one a year ago and still haven't looked at it yet, but after seeing the video I'm inspired.

Can you give some details of your setup?

Glenn

Glenn,

You got to get it going. For a few extra bucks you can have the 700 watt set up.

I have the following;

#Het 2W-20 700 watt motor

# 4s2p PQ 1800 20C lipos

# 45 amp CC ESC

# wemotec mini fan

You now have 700 watts and 1-1 thrust.

Your F 18 will love you for it and you will love it back !!!!!

Mav,

Where do you get your supplies?

I just checked my 3 usual sources and the only item that you listed that I can readily get is the fan unit.

Modelflight has both the motor and fan. Getting there...........

questions, questions........

Do you run your ESC using BEC?

Specs

using BEC is 12 cells, 14.4V, 4S = 14.8V.

No BEC is 16 cells (19.2V)

Yep use the BEC. The CC ESC should be within specs just for only 2 servos which is all the F 18 requires !!!

You can get external BEC's now from dimension engineering !!! This would solve all concerns.

Hi Mavrik

Can you clarify the difference between 4s1p & 4s2p packs?
You said you are running 4s2p PQ 1800 20C lipos on your HET F18.

Does this mean you have 2x 4s1p-1800 packs connected together but you charge them separetely or can you buy 4s2p packs?

Cheers, Pete.

You can buy 4s2p packs, you can buy 3s2p, but the easiest way is to use two 4s1p in parallel as the large 2p packs can be difficult to fit into fuselages.

I went the same way with 1800 packs in 3s configuration, I have two of them so I can use them singly or in parallel when I need the capacity in a larger plane. You can charge them together but I would rather charge mine individually.

One way to charge them together is to use your parallel adaptor to the charger, and then have a couple of balancers, plug the balancers into the packs and they will regulate the 6 or 8 cells while the charger is dumping into all of them at once.

Thanx for the info Mocca :)

The parallel thing has got me stumped

Is a 3s2p equivalent to a 6s1p? :o

I mean does the parallel configuration add to the cell count?

What does it all meeeeeeeean!

Extreme_RC

NO. :D

Ok, you got a 3s1800mah pack in left hand
you got another 3s1800mah pack in right hand

you take red wire of each pack and join
you take black wire of each pack and join

now you have a 3s2p 3600mah pack.

Parallel means both positive and negative wires are joined together, IE the batteries are parallel to each other, the sum total is 11.1v 3600mah.

Series means the positive of one pack is connected to the negative of the second, then the battery plug is connected to the remaining positive and negative wires, the sum total is 22.2v 1800mah.

That should explain more clearly :)

Hey Mav

Just wondering how your HET 2w20 is going with the 700watts being pushed through it. Do you fly your HET F18 frequently?

I've read on the forums somewhere that some guys were having magnets pulling off with this setup. Apparently there was a batch of faulty motors produced when they were first introduced to the market that had inferior epoxy on the magnets. :(

I'm about to buy a motor that can handle a 700watt setup like yours but am not sure if I should go for HET or Mega.

Man I'm glad I entered this hobby at a time were good EDF performance is easily achieved only problem is there's so much product out there :D

Cheers, Pete.

I have 2 Het 2w 20 motors and never a problem !!!

warbirds-rc.com are great and will replace it if you had a problem for free any way !!! My F18 video gets the most hits on their web site !!!

Have not flown the F 18 for a while as to busy with kids. It only has around 10 flights any way. I am thinking I might sell it as such a shame to just sit there. I am into my TREX heli at the moment !

Would be a famous F18 per above for the buyer.

I will do some numbers and wak it on the OZ for sale thread with some pics. Brand new cond.
