View Full Version : Discussion Places to Fly in Perth and Electric Only clubs
grizzlymatt

Hi
Iam a electric flyer in Perth and i was woundering if there are any spots that people fly at south of the river and are there any electric only clubs out there. Maybe it could be whorth starting an electric only club somewhere in Perth that we dont have to travel hours to get to ,like most clubs in perth which are dominated by petrol and have huge membership fees. Why should be be paying so much for something thats a hobby. As i have taught myself to fly (used to live in country where there was no club and now have moved to Perth for uni) i havent got any "wings" so to speak so i would have to be trained up on a petrol plane and then fight the sky for electric at the larger clubs , why bother when i can go to a local park. Need so electric clubs closer in perth that are not to expensive on the membership fees

Hey,
Unfortunatley I dont know f any E clubs south of the river but there are a few that are north of the river. Im not sure what size a/c you are talking about but there is a indoor session that happens on a wed night up at the Midland Velodrome (sorry cant remember which wed it is he he) The guys that fly there are great and they are a memeber of a club tht runs on a couple of ovals, memebership is about 80 a year. Drop in and have a chat they will give all the info you will need.
I used to live in Perth no so long ago (joined the RAAF) thats why i cant remember any of the details. If you do go have a chat to Peter Harding, nice guy. Tell him i said hi.

iam interested in starting an electric only club in perth south of the river , what is the procedure for setting up a club , would be looking at getting some approval from some local schools and uni grounds for a site to fly at , any one interested or anyone what needs to be done couldnt find any details on the maaa website for starting a new club
thanks

Thats very cool, just annoying that ill be leaving perth for the gold coast this wednesday.
Theres alot of great places for electrics. Id say the best way to find suitable parks is to use google earth/maps and look for treeless parks, as well as using a streetmap to ensure its accessible.
I normally fly at the Tomkins Park at the river where wireless hill is. And apparently the council is pretty lineant on planes (electric only). Might be worth asking about that location. What i like about that place is the long length of the park and the low (not zero) trees to the west of the park which means a less disturbed airflow over the area, so a seabreeze is fairly constant and not turbulent which is a pretty rare situation for suburbian parks.
http://maps.google.com/?ll=-32.027489,115.821497&spn=0.008332,0.019956&t=k
(the brown area to the north east end of the park. The cricket grounds are already part of the cricket club and are used regularly.)
Another is maybe the oval at kardinya primary school (that i went to). The bigger public oval, not the school one is a full footy oval with lighting. Its part of the council, but its a nice field. When i was at that school we were visited by the navy and one of their helis which landed there.
http://maps.google.com/?t=k&ll=-32.063701,115.826454&spn=0.008328,0.019956&t=k
(the oval is the one to the eastern side, i never realised there was another to the south of the school (it was out of bounds for students LOL))
This field is ULTRA smooth and even 1" wheels will roll smothly on it, but its like baseball headquarters with baseball practically during flying times, but would be perfect for electrics.
http://maps.google.com/?t=k&ll=-32.05048,115.808365&spn=0.00833,0.019956&t=k
This park is part of Murdoch uni, and is big, but my dad was told to leave the area when he flew helis there. Might be worth asking, but given that its part of a uni might be harder to arrange a club there.
http://maps.google.com/?t=k&ll=-32.073102,115.827634&spn=0.008328,0.019956&t=k
Well these are parks that are "local" to me and so are what im aware of.

yeah i was just looking at orgainsing something so that we have a legal place to fly and insurance and iam sure that some of the local schools or uni would have any problems with it , i got permisson from the hale school principal to fly on there grounds when not in use but now since i have moved south of the river looking to find a place and make it offical , any one what i need to do this

Feb 12, 2006, 10:36 PM
grizzlymatt,
south the river here too, Willetton to be exact
using google maps sounds like a great idea, normaly im flying at my highschool oval and would like to fly with others. Why dont us southys have a meet-up somwhere every week or so? instead of a real club?

Personally i think the informal nature of these clubs mean just meeting up is fine.
Its just that when flying, we really need to be careful not to cause or do anything that can result in legal action. Willetton is really close to where i live. Im in kardinya. and i went to rossmoyne SHS.
Its just kinda not cool that i will be leaving soo soon. Otherwise id be out every now and agian, get to meet up with real people.
Yeah, the google maps are brilliant for determining the flyability of a park. The best example is samson park. on the streetmap its HUGE, but once you look at it on google you realise that its not the best place to fly. (lol i actually went out to have a look before i checked on the maps)
http://maps.google.com/?t=k&ll=-32.069993,115.79886&spn=0.0041,0.007811&t=k
Hmm, tried my links and the zoom seems pretty far out, Just look for the park in the approximate middle of the page.

Feb 12, 2006, 11:12 PM
yeah its really to formality of a club but just somewhere to meet and fly and make it so we have some insurance and legal stuff behind us , not to worried about the club side just maybe getting council/school/uni approval and make everyone get some form of insurance through AWA or MAAA , which iam looking into
grizzlymatt
Feb 12, 2006, 11:13 PM
just get them to clear all that land at samson park would be good !!!

Heres where i live, the house with the red roof to the right (east) of the white house at the cul-de-sac.
Off my street ive actually flown my outrage bipe, thats why these 3D planes are soo fun. Take off in the length of the plane and land with practically 0 ground speed.

Well im going to study at Griffiths uni in southport, on the gold coast.
What i want to do is work extra hard and hope to ace the course. Then apply for a course transfer back here to perth. Its sooo competitive trying to get into the course i wanted here (22 places) and some 700 applied i think. I got into the course in griffiths so ill go there first for the year.
James, you live like next to the park... cool

Hi
That willeton oval loks pretty good, and is convienent for james LOL.
Yes, im a :] person, so im doing dentistry, which is pretty cool. Get to use stainless steel pneumatic drills, with the same bits as a dremel (that spherical "engraving/cutting" tool which is pretty scary)
And the size of the tooth removal tools are scarry too, same size as your large bull nose pliers, except in Stainless steel :D.

Whats those black things on the "oval?" on the google map pic?
Are those people on the oval during the morning the pics were taken?
LOL
Well im not quick to reply unless theres an active chat and everyone else is talking, then ill try to stay online. Or its just pure luck that i am on the net at the time.
What kind of planes are we likely to fly there?
Im thinking of things in the 1-300 watt range, like 3D and small scale and helis
Owen
grizzlymatt
Feb 13, 2006, 12:45 AM
yeah i dont fly anything real big yet although i have picked up a 40 sized axi for a conversion down the future , i usually fly my toro flying wing , brushless stryker , and few foamies , got a t-rex a year ago and never finshed setting it up so some helis also
what bout u , what do u guys fly
grizzlymatt
Feb 13, 2006, 12:46 AM
sorry i forgot to ask is there usually anything or anyone playing/using the oval on a regular basis
_James_
Feb 13, 2006, 01:02 AM
grizzlymatt, this is the only issue im worried about, normaly, during weekends, people come out to use the oval (with dogs) in the morning and late afternoon. but, for most of my flying has been there, 3d foamies, other small elec and such... the only problem i had was magpies during mating season. they would fly after my planes.. so i stuck to the far end of oval, other than that... i have been down there before by myself.
there are also a few soccer goals around, some of the smaller ones are on wheels, but the larger ones are stuck fast.

BTW fellas, RC groups IRC chat on the hompage is always up, and im in there.
James
osmium_192
Feb 13, 2006, 01:50 AM
Always???.....
LOL, anyways, i fly my outrage 3D bipe (more like leisurely flying since im not the best at flying yet but includes some low speed flying and some hovering if the wind is down and KE flight (the outrage HATES KE))
Otherwise its my stearman scale bipe with an outrunner stock to the front.
And my dad flies the T-rex heli. That heli was FUN to set-up since everything is so straightforward. The only annoying thing was step 1 in the instructions, glueing on the bolt/bearing for the flybar hindge, since the threadlock on the bolt kept gettin onto the bushing since i could never hold the bold 100% still.
My dad is going to get the 50 Raptor heli going, either soon, or when i get back, and also a 50 Kalt Cyclone heli.
Other than those, we fly IC, 40 size trainer (Hustler Mk II) and a Sukhoi 31 with OS52FS and a Curare (spelling) pattern ship thats older than me, and a 15 powered glider convert thats alot older than me which i was taught to fly on. We have flown that powered glider at that park which i described as being very smooth baseball HQ.

Hi Grizzly,
If youre looking to join an all electric club. The club I belong to, "WARS" meets at the middle park at Yokine reserve in Yokine on sunday morning. We fly Electrics and gliders. there are about 50 members. and up to 10 - 20 members show up on a good morning.
Don't know if its to far for you to travell.

Sorry to dig an old thread up, but i was searching over the aus thread here and went over this... To my understanding, the Willetton oval belongs to the council, not the school.
James

Jun 02, 2006, 11:04 PM
i think the oval that may have made metion in this tread could be the one at the williton senior high school , why you ask if it belong to the council , wanting to seek permission

Can I joint in? I live south of the river too and usually fly at Curtin Uni next to the Hockey stadium. Also sometime fly at Tompkin Park when it's not too busy or windy.
I fly an electric glider and electric heli (Corona) and will be building 3D foamie soon. So I can do with some help and advise with 3D building and flying.
I went to Yokine reserve (WARS) last Sunday and Monday. Both days were very calm and nice and they flew from morning until very late afternoon.

Hi all, back from my period of nerding... whens the next fly going to happen? ive got some practicing to do now... (reflex for now)
Ive just gotten home and my Sypher looks bigger than i thought, the body area is almost as big as the 2 wings combined. thus a great plane for KE lift, and if the shape is right (yet to be tested) it should fo rolling manouvers pretty well (thats if i can... LOL)
Anyways, off to the desktop for some flying...

Got some flying today, was sooo calm i couldnt resist. Got some stick time for the first time in 4 months :D
Well back to playing with my sypher parts, and imagining hovering it in my house... its a nice thought, but id probably never do it. just do it making wierd noises and holding it in my hand ;)
