Hi Guys,

I need some help deciding what to use for making a plane. Do i use the old convention way and build it with Balse, or the new foam or something else.

Im not really sure...Trying to get into building..

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

wizz,

It all depends on what type of plane you are wanting to build, and more importantly how 'scale' you would like it.

You can go all out on a fully balsa build from scratch plans such as.....

or

Use depron for something different........
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=289276

Have a look at the different forums here and you will see the same plane being made out of practically every different material there is. There is a lot to choose from.

It also depends on how well your building skills are. If this is your first build, you might want to try something a little less tricky than a more advanced project.

Also depends on whether you are flying glow or electric, size of the plane etc. etc.

Thanks Raven..I will definately have a look at them. I was thinking about making a 1:30 scale 737..using the GWS EDF engines...

But because I am close the Amberley Airbase in Qld, I wanted to make a replica of the Wedgetail 737 that has just arrived.

So, Im still not sure....Either way i have plans ready..

Thanks

Ive always liked working with balsa, as it smooths nicely while is easy to glue together. Foam ive started using, depron in particular but what i find is that it sands easily, but tends to become furry. I think im meant to coat it or similar, but is still quite nice to work otherwise. Depron foam, although its completely bright white, still has a grain!!! it will roll more easily along the grain. I think its to do with the direction the depron was produced.

Foam scale models are not uncommon, and ive seen many airliners built for edf applications that are absolutely beaut.

The two, balsa and foam are different and need different techniques to achieve the result, and each has its advantages, so i would experiment first.
