Hey guys,

Just wondering where everyone picks up things like depron here in Aus?
I've seen depron-australia, and the cellfoam 88 over at electric orange. Just wondering if people know of any others?
It would be great if somewhere like Bunnings or Clarke Rubber stocked something of value!

Incidently, has anyone had any experience with the cellfoam 88? whats it like?

SixFingers,

Bunnings dont stock depron, neither do Clarke Rubber (or at least not my local ones ).

I have picked up depron in the past at Roj's hobbies $18 a 6 mm sheet. There is a guy on ebay selling it as well. However his sheets are rather narrow, I suppose due to shipping restraints. Here's the link,

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Depron-FOAM-6-SHEETS-6mm-Thick-Easy-to-build-with_W0QQitemZ6030680876QQcategoryZ34056QQssPageNa meZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Have not tried cellfoam yet.

I bought a box of Depron from that bloke on ebay. its alright, just no way near the sizes we need really.

I wish we could get Fanfold from bunnings and just local stores like the yanks do, in 50 foot lots for like $35.

ravencsr: How big was the sheet of depron from Rojs?

ravencsr
Jan 22, 2006, 06:03 AM
Funflyaddict, the size by memory was 70cm x 100cm

You can go here to buy as well, they use to supply the full size sheets as well. I think they cut to make shipping easier, however I spoke to the owner a long time ago and I think he said a full box of 20 full size sheets could be arranged. Don't hold me to that, as it was a long time ago.

http://www.depron-australia.com/

As you said its a pity we dont have the same access to foam / kits / supplies / accessoriers / scale of choice etc etc as the yanks do , as well as their prices on a lot of things.

However I'm pretty happy living here in Oz. :D

Can't have the best of everything !

Owen,

Sorry, we don't sell EPP.

Depron costs $10 for 1000x700x3mm and $19 for 6mm.

Simon Barnett

Foam sales, its in boragoon in perth, for local people :D
NOT the cheapest, but its a source thats reasonable. Ive seen and asked the guy for the stuff so theres a box of it. i think he has about 5-10 of eac at the moment.
http://www.foamsales.com.au/

For 1 or 2 sheets, of 3mm its cheaper than the fuel costs of going north of the river if you live south. And they always have a boxof off cuts and scraps that you cah have in the front of the store at the door. good for receiver packing foam, car washing sponges, battery packing foam, normal EPS bits, all offcuts...

I've been hunting around the internet trying to suss out any suppliers or depron/fanfold/cellfoam... i've found that cellfoam seems to be a common underlay in flooring applications...
If anyone has a carpeting store, or flooring place nearby, they should check them out - never know, might find the ultimate foam!

edit: i've noticed that www.ozhobby.com is going to be stocking EPP.. i've bought other stuff of him before and didn't have any problems at all.

Man....i think the market for Fan fold and Depron here would go off......WE need a lowes (likes the yanks to get fan fold) and a depron suppier with BIG sheets cheep and not outrageous postage prices as well.....

sorry just a bit biffed that i cant get any to make tonnes of cheep foamys....then id get my foamy really low and fly it fearlessly like they'r meant to be....and not risk $75 of foam...

Funflyaddict
Feb 07, 2006, 01:51 AM
Not that i dont get it low....just not with rolling harriers or inverted harriers due to the fact that my nutsack aint big enough to risk my foamy*:-D

Its not your ___, but the size of your wallet that making it a problem, which the avability of foam would solve.

Unforturnately foam here is not used in practically every house, so the only demand would be modeling and thats a pretty small market. So with low demand comes high prices from the inability to exploit the economies of scale possible in the US.

I saw someone post that Styrapak (in Campbelfield VIC) sell FFF. It's apparently not a walk-in retail shop, but a factory outlet so you have to know what you want when you go there. I've enquired once before, but have not actually bought anything...no foamy project at the moment.

I get foam sheets from my local Craft Shop in Camberwell Melb Vic
The shop name is Art attack and its in Burke road across from the Chocolate Box (for the locals looking)

Comes in 5mm thickness, has a tough paper on top/bottom and is excellect for making foamies with, only a little heavier than depron. It very similar to the Thunder Tiger 3D foamies material.

Its called :-

"Artist First Choice" foam core board
White 5mm
A1 594x840mm
P568

Its approx $10 for the A1 sheet and a slightly larger 1meter sheet is $15 approx. Oh.. its also available in black! awesome hehe

This is the 3Dbatix 85% Diablo I built using this foam sheeting.

Is that like cellfoam? if i can build a 36" or so foamy out of it...then all good in my eyes..

Do you have an adress and shop name for this?.....i might go pick up a few sheets. :)

Thanks,

Owen

or maybe it should be "The other Owen" since we already got an Owen here

EDIT: Maybe i should have read your post about shop name :o :o

i've used these craft foam boards and i think they're great. There's some additional weight from the cardboard, but it's strong and quite resistant to crashes...unlike brittle depron or cellfoam. i use cellfoam too, but where there's some strength required, i use the craft foam boards.

My 3dfoamy F18 is made completely from these craft foam boards and it's been to war and back and it's still going strong. Only thing is, after 6-7 months so far, the cardboard is starting to lift off the foam. I just fix it by gluing it down again tho...

PS:I get mine from Riots at Northland.

You guys don't suppose this craft-foam-board is like the stuff in the US they get from walmart and then soak it for a few hours in water to peel off the paper/card ("peelply" I think it's called over there)?

Paul.

ExtremeSkyes
Feb 08, 2006, 06:35 PM
yeah...probably. Once you peel off the paper, it's texture is like depron.

Well ive seen foam with really thick card on it, but i recall that that was very heavy. and the foam was grey.

This product being arts and craft realated might mean is more readily available. I have a feeling its very much just depron with paper on it.

Peeling should work, just dont know about the finish, is it smooth, or torn like after sanding depron.

But dont you find that those sheets arnt big enough:(?..... unless they get over 100cmx40cm sheets??

osmium_192
Feb 18, 2006, 01:37 AM
I guess that means we need to buy smaller batteries....

(or glue together sheets to make a wing... but we dont like that, well i dont)

Or use balsa *cough cough cough* ;)

Paul,
I use a pressure washer to blow off the cardboard, but you need to be gentle with it,much quicker than soaking it,plus the foam is of better quality than depron I think, just not as brittle.

Ok nothing back from the foam manufacturer as of yet. I'm gonna give him a week then call him again and see how he's going. I found (after a days ringing around) I finaly stumbled across a place in Devonport Called Picture This i rang them and spoke to Dick and he's getting an order of 5mm 1m x 1m Foam Core Board $20 per sheet on thursday, friday next week can't wait.

1 more thing with these boards is it better to leave the board on or take it of and use just the foam (Weight isn't a problem in my books) If it's heavier i'll just get a bigger engine i suppose

I've built a 'stick' from the foam/paper board, it 'feels' a bit heavy in the air but as a doodle around type plane or camera platform it's fine, on a 3s 2200 pack i can get about 20mins of flying no probs, probably stretch that to 30min if i was just dawdeling around.

Hey Extreme,
Just A quick question what type of Paint do you use to Paint Your planes? I have just completed my Craft Foam Board F-22 (yet to glue) and was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I followed the plans of this web site http://rc.tomhe.net/f-22#toc10 Looks sweet put together lol.
