The ongoing debate is getting old.

They are different from one another. Simple as that.

There is a major difference in one single aspect = money $$$.

Rarely in the software industry does any developer/company charge more for upgrading a product.

The $$ for the G3 upgrades I believe is a huge kick in the balls to every consumer who purchases G3. Consumers should not be kicked in the nads. They should be handed discounts, coupons, upgrades and unsurpassed customer support. In a perfect world of course.

I love G3. multiplayer is a great tool along with the training vids. I've been using XTR and have recently aquired one for myself and will find out if it is right for me.

I think every sim has it's advantages and disadvantages. You could spend a week 24/7 reading through all the forums about "XTR vs. G3" and still have no clue as to which is technically 'better'. That is because neither is better than the other. They are just different from one another. Period.

Get both and see which one suits your needs.

Then sell the one you will not use because both G3 and XTR hold their value very well.

Which means that BOTH products are exceptionally well made.

You are obviously not in the software industry or must be a Linux user. :)

heh, i was gonna say.... i'm always getting hit for software upgrades. you might get free upgrades in the first year, but none after that. very good points, though. if one sim isn't technically better than the other you're left with personal preference.

heh.. :p actually I am. Working for IBM

Personally, I think RF is pushing away potential customers because of the high cost of purchasing the add-on's/upgrades.

They can charge anything they like (reminds me of a large software company...let's just call them 'M') for the addon's because there is no other G3 and no build software as of yet (still crossing my fingers and toes). :)

And yes, I really think it comes right down to personal preferences having TRIED both G3 and XTR.

I'm sure there's a huge amount of flaming/grudge/spite/ignorance when it comes to some people comparing the two without actually trying them out fairly.

So far, I'm leaning towards G3 for ease of use and enjoyment of online flying with friends and the tutorial videos. I think G3 is an excellent sim for a beginner. On the other hand, XTR when setup properly just blows me away for realism both in graphics and physics.

Like I said and many before me, personal preference and setup will determine which is more suited for your needs and you cannot go wrong with either.

Well, having used both (albeit the demo of G3 - I have G2) I'm at a point where I'd never recommend G3 even as a upgrade. Reflex and AFPD are far superior. About the only thing that Gn has is the instructor stuff - but I would not use that as rationale for buying G3 - get G2 if you need that sort of thing.

BTW, if you work for IBM you must know about their Passport program where you pay through the nose for upgrades via the "maintenance fee". Some contracts I've seen recently in this area show 25% annual maintenance! What a rip...

Dude, IBM is right up there w/ the rest of them as far as upgrade costs go. How would a software house make any $$ if they didn't get paid for the code that they write? Security updates? Service Packs? You betcha, however those are bug rollups and vunerabilty patches for a product you already paid for.

For the record all software companies stick you in the pipe for 'add-ons' not just the..."M" word. I could give a rip about the Sims, don't use them. Just sticking up for the code monkeys.

Sorry Horse, had to get a kick in...
