View Full Version : Will a brushless sensorless Astro 05 1T work in a boat?

I just recieved an ABS hull from a friend trying to get me into boating. It's a three point hydro and is made by Randy of Blew Bye You Boatworks. I stopped by the shop in Concord and he said they raced them in a 7 cell hydro class. The boat there I looked at had a ferrite car motor installed and Randy said I could use any motor for the race, even the brushless type.
I have an Astro 05 BL sensorless that was meant for the 7 cell F5D pylon racing planes. Will this motor work in this boat? If so, what prop and what speed control would you recommend?
Thanks,

Greg
the Astro should be fine with an Octura X432 prop
water cool it - a 5/32 aluminium tube coiled around the motor
you will need a grunty controller 70 amps to handle the current it will pull or you could go to an Octura X430 or X427 and get away with a 50 amp controller
Would I be correct in assuming the hull is a volcanic splash?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Andrew. I was in a hurry when I talked to Randy so I forgot what he called it. I measures 12.5" wide by 21.5" long.
I was hoping to pull about 70 amps out of the Astro. Water cooling sounds like a good idea. I know this is asking a lot but will this be a competitive combo? What kind of speeds should I get out of it? Should I use a flex drive or a straight drive shaft. Where can I get a bunch of props to play with?

Hi Greg,
Water cooling is going to be a must if you want the motor to live. That hull and motor combo should be quite fast, that combo and good driver skills should be quite competitive. You should use a flex drive as that will allow more adjustments to trim the boat. Randy should have all the hardware you need. Otherwise you can get the hardware from Ray Fuller http://drcwebservices.com/ffe/Default.htm or Chris Fine http://www.finedesignrc.com/default.htm Both will also be a good source for Props and all the other goodies you will need to complete the hull.
Good luck and have fun!
