Here's a little run-up/down video for you... about 1:10s long, 3.5MB, you really need /sound/ to appreciate this.

This was run on a 2S2200mA pack (some of you should recognise it :) ) with a 7060 prop (all I had floating around).

(right-click and 'save as' --- if you have problems playing this, then I suggest getting the very capable media player 'VideoLAN', available for download at http://www.videolan.org/mirror.php?mirror=http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/videolan/&file=vlc/0.8.4a/win32/vlc-0.8.4a-win32.exe )

You know, I personally wouldn't have stood where you were during that test :)

RussellK,

What you can't see though is that there's a doorway right where I was standing... I was subsequently hiding behind the frame/blockwork. Had my safety goggles on too 8D

Is there only one model of motor ?

pldaniels
Jan 16, 2006, 04:59 AM
ozace,

At the moment, yes, the 2205. GWS will be releasing a 2208, 2215, 30xx series over time too.

I'm keeping one of these paired units for myself to make an aerial-photography plane based on one of my earlier plans, should be a nice flyer.

I'll be interested to see how these go on the GWS warbirds - they seem to be designed for 2S packs and there doesn't seem to be a stick compatible mounting system yet?

Can't argue with the price :)

RussellK,

I've queried GWS about the lack of the stick-mount, it would have been "perfect" with one as a drop-in replacement to a great degree :(

As for the warbirds, it'll work well with the P51, Spitfire, ME109 - but it won't work well with the Zero, F4U and others with a 'large cowl'. The reason comes down to the fact that this motors are really ideal to throw a 8x4.3 prop, as you can imagine that doesn't leave a lot of prop beyond the cowl on the F4U etc.

Why is the firewall mount on the bell inthat pic... LOL

Just being annoying. :p

Whats the specs for this motor, inparticular the max thrust/amps and weight. It looks pretty cool with the skewed cooling vents in the stator mount.

Owen,

(you're everywhere!)

The mount was on the rear because yours truly wasn't thinking, just fiddling :-O

Anyhow, it'll do about 420g thrust with an 8x4.3 slowfly prop on a 2S battery. Good for the P51, ME109, Spitfire warbirds and of course the venerable SlowStick :)

Only trouble though I've found is that there's no "stick mount" for it :( :( :(, GWS says it'll come soon. In the meantime I'm ordering some from Aircraft-world.com

The drawings are finished, we should start the tooling soon after Chinese new year vocation.

I wish GWS will start to make BL motors mount at the eraly March. :)

Mr Lin,

Many thanks - you can be sure there will be many orders for it - everyone wants to use the stick mount :D

Hi Paul

Alternatively GWS prop. 8040 could also be used well on 2205,
please be informed that 2205's shaft could be adjusted forward and backward by unscrewing its rear end, currently you would
need to build a wooden mount first or you could use the cross mount instead. Do not worry, its stick mount will be released soon.

This is not a paid advert...hehehe. I just got the 2205 and ESC15A from Paul. It's great. Just don't be a dumb bunny like me and try a 3S 11.1v Li-Po. Too much juice and the ESC cut out. Can't wait for the 2S 7.4 to get here.

Mark,

Only wish I had contacted you about that 2S pack before I posted it out. ... now you have to wait till tommorow to get it. Oh well, it's pouring down rain where you are anyhow :D

Incidently, you can run the 3S, but you definately need a much smaller prop, I think something in the 6" range might be safe. However yes, this really is a 2S motor.

I just received notice from GWS that the 2205 has an official kV value of 2050, that'll explain the desire for a smaller prop on 3S and why it's so nice just on 2S.

I'm sure some people will moan/be-upset about the relatively high kV value for an outrunner, however I think that it actually makes a nice balance ( in this instance ).

AARGH MOAN GROAN make noise.....

2000kv???? theres been quite a bit on the gws motor recently and the kv rating really depends on setup. its got 1200 if you got a 8x4 i recall on 2S drawing 12A.

Have a look at this.

I think kV is supposed to be the measure with "no load", even then that can be a subjective measure.

The dropping kV with the large prop is fairly normal, all motors will do that. I'm going to be trying out the BL / ESC pair on my newly hacked up balsa flying wingy thingy...

Not quite complete yet, still needs the protective box area for the electronics, ailerons/flaps cut out and the elevator activated.... oh and the motor attached. :D

Going to try 2S with 7060 prop at first... and work from there.

Ray,

Good day - shouldn't you be having a holiday now?

All is going well here - the BL motor/ESC combos are selling very nicely. Looking forward to getting an email from GWS when I can buy the 2208 and larger ESC's :)

Hopefully today I'll have those Formosa-II kits delivered (The postman should have them).

Mr Lin,

Please tell me, what is the size of the grub screw located on the GWS Brushless motor (the one that locks the the shaft)? It's not 2mm, it's not 1/8".... none of my allen-keys fit it :(

Just had to say ... Had the most awesome 20min flight this evening. What a buzz! Sunset, a floating SS at some terrific height and a beer afterward. Does it get any better :D ? The brushless works a treat.

2lakea,

Excellent to hear that things worked out well with the new setup. I've bagged up your cremated kit and have sent off an email. Really not sure where the damage started on that setup, so many 'strange' things.

I had a pretty good flight with my jet-wing, until the receiver I was using reminded me that it was kept in its box for a reason... it was a customer-return item, faulty (intermittently)... whoooops. Oh well, 2 days and I'll have the wing flying again.

One big question I have though --- how have you mounted the motor to you SS ?

Paul.

thats one hell of a rev range Paul. Whats the specs on it??? If ever i get into electric stuff i'll be sure to buy from you..Rod :)

rredbeak,

Depends on what you put on it, but basically it'll go from -

11500rpm on 2S / 7.4V with a 7 x 3.5 prop (slowfly, lightweight) (313g thrust)
9100rpm on 2S/7.4V with a 8 x 4 prop (416g thrust)
8000rpm on 2S/7.4V with a 8 x 4.3 prop (424g thrust)

I'm using a 7060 prop at the moment with a 2S pack, pushing a 380g AUW along with extreme authority. Tommorow I hope things will go better when I use the new GWS 8MSL+ receiver in the wing rather than the broken one I used before.

Morning Paul,
I mounted the motor as per photos attached. Apiece of pine and 2 braces of thin ply. Works well :)

Oh... my.... gosh! That's brilliant, I love the camera, better send me some video footage from that.

Glad to see/hear that things are going well with the GWS Unit, I just gave mine a good workout in the skies with the pusher-jet, must have been out there nearly 10 minutes and I started to think "Okay, enough, time to go home before the Gods strike me down, again". Just waiting to see how many mA were taken out of the pack.

The pack that fried its insulation etc that you sent back seems fine, so that's a good thing. GWS won't be back "online" until Monday - hopefully then we can work out what went wrong. Other than that, I'm really happy myself with how this motor is going. The pusher-jet is about 420g AUW, using a 7060 prop on it.

Just one thing I noticed, and one thing you might check out - the connectors for the motor/ESC seem a bit close together and may "accidently" short out, I'd suggest hot-glue or tape to individually isolate each one.

Hoped for a successful morning taking AP with the SS. Got too far away for litttle GWS receiver and lost control. Result...See photo.
Amazingly, 3 hrs later, friends were driving past the very tree and the thing blew down and landed in front of their car (on its wheels no less). They called to see who in the area might own it. and BINGO undamaged plane and camera are returned WOOHOO!!!

2lakea,

That's truly an amazing story - you're really trying to destroy that machine aren't you?

If you're going to fly far away, perhaps you should try one of the 8MSL+ receivers.... works good for me.

Good reason to always carry a chainsaw with you btw ;)

chainsaw??? i think you would be removed from the area for noise pollution (because its RC related) let alone for damaging public property. At the height, you will need to get the whole tree down.....

What you really need is a big focusable magnet that will turn off at the last moment, like on the movies :D, well ive seen it that many times, they must have already developed it for real.

LOL, amazing story anyway.

Have Fun

Aaah, even better, use a laser to cut the branches holding the plane - it'll be silent, long range and precise :)

Carl,

Sorry about the delay. Was spending all night working on a new FMS model :)

In short, no, we don't have any "Real world" figures on what the 2208 or 2212 are going to pull out in terms of performance. They are however slated to be coupled with a 25 and 35A ESC respectively from what I understand.

Regards.
