View Full Version : Discussion Winter Flying in Canda - Beaver on Skis

Well, got up Sunday morning and had nothing planned. Hmm, why not make some temp. skis for my GWS Beaver.
I've ordered real ones from Du-bro but I just couldn't wait, so I tried this out. Here they are. Worked pretty well, but as the day got warmer, the snow got heavier so it was packing on the skis during take off... lots of fun though.

Just used some foam from meat packaging, and some imagination.

They aren't ugly! Especially if they do the job. Good stuff!

Hi Dan and friends:
GWS floats could be used instead, then Beaver could be on special skies for taking off from both lake and snow field.

I purchased a set of du-bro skis, and they worked well, but unfortunately I had a crash with my beaver. It's unrepairable now. :(

Hi Dan_eflyer:
I recommend you to buy a pair of GWS float from your
local hobby shop as GWS floats are foam molded with
boat-like plastic bottom, light and least expensive.

Dan,
I'm going to purchase the GWS floats. Dunno if you're going to or not. But at my LHS where a regular GWS kit is over $85 and up, even the floats there are only $11. Great deal IMHO.
Yeah, sorry to hear about your Beaver... What happened?

I could buy the floats, but they would be useless because the beaver is un-flyable. I have to purchase another one. It's not repairable.

Not sure really. It flew great last year. Then I put it away for a year while I flew my corsair. I decided to bring it out of storage and have some fun with skis, but the plane flew very poorly before I even put skis on it. I spent a lot of time moving the CG around, but still flew poorly. It finally got the best of me and crashed on my roof. Then a gust of wind fixed that problem and it landed hard. VERY HARD.

Hi Always flying
It's great, you've left skies' prints on the shinny snow field.
We only have snows on high mountains.

Hi P-38 Lighting
It's okay, I'm expecting your photos of P-38 flying with
skis, well, GWS floats would be preferred.

Hi Dan
Hope you could repair your Beaver back. There's something new, GWS Beaver has new power version, EPS400C with D gear, it would be greater to connect with 8-cell NiMh or 3S LiPo as per
GWS R&D, personally I would like 8 cells NiMh.
Dan_eflyer
Jan 26, 2006, 09:08 AM
I had a 3S lipo on my 350 C and I think that was too much power. I think the plane is too light. Added weight throughout the plan with a 400 D would probably function better.

Hi
GWS will release GWS P-40 soon, soon, I really do not know how
soon it'll be, few months, I hope so.

Chen,
Will that release be in the USA? It usually takes a couple more months for them to be stocked in Canada after the US gets them...

Hi Corey
As far as I've been informed in GWS about "Release", it's worldwide. I would believe
that your local hobby shops/dealers would probably placed their orders with GWS too late to catch the first lot of new products, such as Formosa II, Brushless motor 2205
and ESC15A.
I've been told that there'll be new B/L motors 2208 and 2212, new ESCs ESC25A and ESC35A, soon after this month. GWS has already kept all of our dealers/distributors well informed of quotations. I would believe that you would need to ring up your local
hobby shops for your needs.
You are welcome to visit our web site www.gwsus.com for more details of GWS products and announcements.

There's GWS chopper with PHA300 mixer, flies well, it's lighter and cheaper than glow one, why not take a look?
I would like to say that GWS floats could be used both on lakes and snow fields, they are also cheaper and lighter.

Hi Dan
Applying 3S LiPo on 350C is not recommended as the motor will be burned
out within short time when using full throttle.
EPS400 D could be connected with either 11.1V 3S LiPo or 8 cell NiMh, you
could apply 1/2 throttle for level flight if you have a light airplane and that
would be much better for this motor, though EPS400 has thicker carbon brushes inside.
You are welcome to visit http://www.gwsus.com/english/product/powersystem/eps400c.htm for more
datas.

Sorry. only Glow Helis forme, Going for a Thuder Tiger Raptor 50 :) Sorry about that. i only will have enough for one chopper. and i will be getting into 3D. you should look into a CP heli

Hi P-38J-Lightning
Gas powered Heli would be more expensive than GWS dragonfly heli. Tiny electric heli could fly outdoor on calm days, even light
breeze days, lighter, cheaper, safer and quiet, you could fly
anytime (indoor under lighter), why not take a look and have a
try if you would like to fly heli?

ahh but being 14 i cant afford to even spend a couple hundred on the Dragonfly. i am very aware of the expense of the 50 but this is my choice. i need something htat will handle a bit more of a breeze and i feel in electric things taht only the first part of the battery has the power and after that you have to constantly figure out where the throttle will be for say a hover in a heli. with a nitro it will always be in the same spot and have the same amount of power whetet the tank is full or with an ounce left. if i were to get a little electric it would be a Piccolo or Hummingbird also because their parts are stocked nearby.

Hi P-38J-lightning
I agree with you, that's what E-flight needs to be improved. Be
reminded that more and more powerful LiPo battery packs and
brushless motors have been introduced, and some of them could
go much better than .25 even .30 nitro engines though LiPo packs are expensive.
I hope you could have chance to fly electrical airplanes some day
when you have enough budget. You'll know that they are much more convenient than nitro one.
There are more dealers in Canada which stock GWS products, and there is GWS USA in Los Angeles, so do not worry about
GWS parts and stocks.

I Have looked into some electric aircraft and may get one of teh GWS E-Starters. They look relaxing and Fly RC Magazine seemed to like them. and as for Lipo, never for me. I dont trust myself with soemthing like that only Ni-Mh Ni-Cad for me. howeever i do have an electric car. its fun but lacks duration. and the motor is dead lol! i find that its just less money for nitro.

Hi P38J Lightening
I would be glad to know that you may get an E-STARTERS.
It would be much cheaper to buy a Slow Stick with EPS400C D
gear if you'd like to have a relaxing airplane. You could use 7-8
cells NiMH with that motor, EPS400C, cheaper and easier.

P-38,
You should ask Boomer. He's done everything and anything to a bunch of SSs. Including an 8 motor SS. He'd probably know what one can carry, even give a few motor combos for extra heavy loads... Just a thought. ;)

Winter flying can be great fun, ski's and floats are great for soft powder snow.
I will just wait for a cold snap and then use the snowmobile tracks as a runway for my wheeled SS.
I have had my SS upto 32 oz, this is by no means a record.

I'd like to know how you fly this 32 oz. Slow Stick, would you
post some photos of its flights on snow field. It would be a record maker.
