Took my Layayette class Boomer to the lake today. I noticed there were no bass or other fish around and soon found out why. A Gar which is a prehistoric looking fish with a long beak and rows of small sharp teeth was in the area. This one was around 4-5 FT long. When it saw my Sub, he immediatly went after it. I finally decided its time to go to war. I tried my best to run into it but this boats maneuvabilty isnt even close to this fish. After a few close calls, the Gar decided he had enough. Heres a pic of the Gar looking for my boat.

After a few head on attacks, I got a good run on him and just barely missed him. Look closely just above and too the left and you can see him. The Boomer is 54 inches long. Im just below the surface really moving fast.

VICTORIOUS!! The waters are safe again. If I would have had my U-Boat, I could have launched a few torpedoes at him!

Firing missle from underwater has already been done. Actually they are Estes motors used for rockets.

Amazing. How does the ballast work?

A basic explanation is that you have a tube which is the tank. Its got holes in the bottom and one vent on top. A servo opens the hole which allows water to enter the tank. A small brass tank which contains air "actually not air but the liquid thats in the stuff which you use to bow off electronics" is used to "blow" or force the water out the bottom. There are also failsafes which can detect signal loss from your radio which move the servo which blows the tank. Heres a pic of the water tight container from the boomer. The front section to the right is the floodable section which is the ballast tank, The rear section houses all the electronics, motor, radio ect.

I've got gators to worry about. Not only for the sub but when I have to swim in after it. And I've been accused of fakining it just to swim.

Great story....very entertaining.... The gar can be a very large fish, and being knocked around by some foreign looking object must have left him somewhat puzzled.

I have had an experiance with a very large 4.5 ft catfish in a cave10 ft down here in florida,I was cruising along with it and after a while it got rather freindly with my sub so much that when he got very close he would whack it with his tail so hard that the rudder and diveplain broke off,the force was so strong that one could feel the shock wave!Power and speed these creatures have.Might have been a matting dance!
I had to stair down a gotor the other day i gues he cold not figure out just what kind of fish my sub was till he got about 15 feet away ,as soon as he heard the motors he bolted into the deep and did not return.
In Puget Sound I ran my Yamato 1/200 battleship and out of the blue came a sea outer and i fortunatly turned around and gunned it back in to shore as he was closing on me at terrific pace,as I was getting close to the shore to retrieve the model he was only feet away and we both met at the shore,I was fortunate to get it out in time as he was ready to pounce on it but then he gave me the strangest look and i think he realized it was not a living being but a machine and in a flash was gone, that i will never forget and have never run my models in the Ocean again too many critters!
I have also had several gators around another model in South Carolina big nasty ones but they also would just stair and if I went in there direction they would bolt away as if they know that it was man made and not eddeble ,dettected by sound.

JimJam, great photos. Looks like you've got murky water too. Know of any clear water in SC?
Dave,
What a great You Tube video that otter would've made?
When I come up under ducks they always know well beforehand. I've never been able to surprise or frighten them, but a gator might be a little stealthier than a motorized sub.
I’ve got a video of ducks flying off just before it surfaces (somewhere).
