can it be done? I opened one of my Rc car brushed motors last night it has 3 arms with I think 17T of wire, with 2 big mags. I was wondering if it possable at all to make this into a brushless type outrunner.

how about turning a CAN to the right size for fitting 4 magnets inside it.
With only 3 stators there will be confusion when winding, eh ? :-)

NO confusion was intended .... sigh

Yea that part looks easy, I dont know if it will work with 3 poles and 2 mags, or 4 mags.

It can be done, but you need 4 or 8 poles, take a look at this place http://www.solcon.nl/gjkool/index.html
Like you I have a BUNCH of those old 05 car motors, so I can see myself building some 3 slot stator motors, am working on a 6 slot motor now.

i tried it once, there is even a thread about it somewhere here, with pictures. turned it into an outrunner motor (the can spun). I used the windings and can with magnets as is. but since the cans aren't manufactured to be balanced, it didn't work too well. Gave up on it eventually once i started hacking into CD-ROMS.
here it is:

although some of my pictures are missing, I'll have to fix them.

it would not gain you that much more power i aready asked this before there was a motor fourm. brushless motors are not powerful because of the loss of the brushes. but rather than the fact that they have powerful magnets and ball bearings. also i am not sure ifnit would be safe. the added power might be to much. when i tried mine it hit 75000 rpm and then exploded and throw shrapnel 15 pluss feet.
just mine input.

might work ok for small motors, but burro is right, way too dangerous with big cans only stabilised at one end, the can needs big bore bearings for mounting to the rear, so a proper mounting can be added.

... With only 3 stators there will be confusion when winding, eh ? :-)No :) Wind ABC, use 2 or 4 magnetpoles.
