I am thinking about buying an E-Starter, which is a 425-565g plane depending on battery load. I would imagine that I will build mine at around 500g considering I want to use 150g 3cell lipos (commonsenserc.com 8C) and brushless outrunner.

Olmod has recommended this:

I would go along with the 17t,
here is a one of my builds.
GB 22mm stator
12 5x5x1 n50 17t .5 xY
no load 11500rpm@7.5v

GWShd 7035 10000rpm@3amps =7.3oz thrust.
APCe 7x5 8000 rpm@5.5amps =300g=10.7oz.
APCe 8x6 6500rpm@7.75amps=380g=13.5oz.

(I) used .5 mm which is 24g a good wire for winders.
and if you want to run 3sp thats ok too,

GWShd 7035 13500rpm @6amps=415.2g=14.66oz.
GWS hd 8040 10.2v 10200rpm@9.75amps =514.60g=18.17oz.

MorrisM has forewarned me that 17T with 24g wire is a challenging wind. Having never wound a motor, does anyone else have a suggestion that might haul this bird around? I want reasonable sport performance, I wont need anything overpowered, as this is going to be my aileron trainer.

MorrisM also told me that I can wind 17T with smaller wire, but that the setup wont handle as many amps. I only plan on pushing 10 amps max either way, will the 26g wire handle that many amps?

I like the strongrcmotor kits, but would a single stator Komodo be more up to the task?

Keep in mind I need something that a beginner can wind with some success.

lensrc makes a 17 turn that would be about the same, and its prebuilt and they are very nicly done.

you want a kit just to wind? i would go w/ the same thing, a strongrc kit or komodo, wichever, and use a smaller wire, it will handle it, and get plenty of it, mostly they give you twice over what you need in the kits, so i would do a few practace winds to see how they fit. monitor the motor temp when you start flying it though, just to be sure.

what kind of packs to you have? you could get good results with about anything if you have the right prop for it, it will just change how much thrust you get at what speed.

ive got a lensrc 25 turn 22.7mm stator motor that i turn a 9x5 on and its great, very good power from a tp 3s480 pl. you would have plenty of power to get out of the odd death plunge! ;p

good luck, im sure you will have fun, the e-starter would fly great w/ a nice light lipo setup.

Pushing a 17t-26g GB that far would be risky. If you want to stick to 26g, go for 20t. On 3s and 8x4 it will be bumping 16oz at ~7 amps.

I want to use a 2000mah 3 cell from CSRC...150g budget lipo rated at 8C

If you want to use a pack that heavy, I would recomend going to a GBX double. That pack alone is over 5 oz. The E-Starter is perfectly capable of toting it around, but I doubt it would work well with single stator CDR power. But, I am not an E-Starter expert, and others may know better. I had an E-Starter, but never tried flying it with a single. I had an Aurora 300 in a gearbox on it.

I really wanted to find a kit that I would feel comfortable tackling. Looks like I just need to buy a manufactured motor.

Gobrushless sells GBX kits, You can also get the shaft preinstalled in the bell face.

So you believe that a beginner can wind a double stator successfully??

It is not much different than winding a single. I think most guy's just clip the little nubs off, and glue the two stators together, then wind as usual. Only things to consider would be can you press the flux ring, and the wind counts are usually different for a double. A quick look at the GoBrushless database should find a siutable wind count to start with. I would guess a beginner, given he has a good vice or press to do the flux ring, would have an easier time doing one of the GBX kits than a basic GBv. One tip, though. If you do try a GBx, wash the oil off the flux ring, then use some 250-300 sandpaper to remove the gun blue before pressing it to the front plate. Glue for the magnets will stick much better.

We are running these AC-DIYMOT-VL diy kits in a gws 350 gearbox with awesome performance in an E-Starter. . We wind them 5 turn, c-gear,
10 x 4.7, 3 cell li-po. They are $35 Can.

if you want a single kit try the komoto"s they should work fine on the e-starter, a 14-15t with the stock 24g wire and a 9x5 gws prop would be fine and not to hard for a first time wire. (13t would be ok, i think and a little easier to wind)
