from an Epson - Printer - I'm right ?

12 Slots - Should be able to drive a 1,5m biplane ( no 3D ) but perhaps something like a Tigermoth - somthing slow with a relatively large prop.

Not to get into a 'mine is bigger than yours thing' but,...........mine is bigger than yours :p .

This is one of my current projects, the motor came from the ventilation system of a Freightliner semi truck, the stator is 80mmx20mm. Just thought that I might share.

:D I heard a rumour that there was someone building a big contra' :D
Id be surpised if it had neo's, hows the lamination thickness?

latrans
Jan 11, 2006, 05:10 PM
Olmod,

I don't know what rumors you heard but a big contra isn't on my drawing board.

As for my big motor: no neos in it and the lamination thickness is about 0.65mm (a bit on the thick side). The biggest problem I have right now is that the rotor is plastic, albeit heavy duty plastic, with a 3 piece flux ring imbeded in it. The manufacturer only rates the rotor to 3000-or 3,500 rpm so if I use it for anything I'll need a custom made rotor, and I don't have a lathe. A problem that I will have to think on. I may offer a motor to someone with a lathe if they would be willing to make two flux rings and endbells and send a set to me.

One interesting thing about it is that it does have curved magnets - 6 of them. Sorry Scott couldn't help myself.

Hi

My motors doesnīt have neodimium magnets , the lamination thickness is 0.5mm in the three motors , and they have ball bearings for the rotor.I want to make a knew can and flux ring to adjust de airgap depending te magnets size.I work with a lathe every day , is my true work , machining miniatures here www.andrea-miniatures.com.

Hi

The three motors together , in te left the 7cm motor , in the middle the 6cm motor and in the right the new 5 cm motor. All of them have 0.5mm thick laminations an are 15mm tall. The second photo is the adhesive paper in the can of the 5cm motor. In a three hours i will put the copying machine serial number and model.

I have torn apart 5 or 6 old HP laser printers that we threw away at work, and all of them had stepper morots in them so they were useless for stators. They do have a large amount of good wire in them however, so they have that going for them, but that is about it. It would be nice to get a good 40-45mm stator to play with. I will keep my eye out for more.

To the moderators: Perhaps we can get a sticky in this section where people can post photos of the stators they find and the copy machines or laser disk player, or where ever else we might make a good score. This would be a great way to know what to look for when we went out looking for stuff.

Lucien,

I've never found anything of worth in a printer either, as far as I know only copying machines have the large stators in them............... you probably already knew that.

Hi

I have scrapped an old IBM POS 4684 and I have found two stators, one (12 T) in HD IBM 10 MB (MB, not GB) and other (6T) in a SpectraPhysics barcode reader.
Diameter: 42 mm (HD) and 38 mm (Scanner).
Thick laminations.: 0.5 mm
Height: 3 mm (HD), 3.5 mm (Scanner).
Better of all, the psycodelic mirror... :D

Excuse me for my english..-

Got another Tektronix Phaser 740 Color Laser. Here's what's inside: Two nice motors, both stator diameter 50mm, one 13mm high, one 19mm high.
The first one, incidentally, after several successful CDRoms and Streamer tape motors, despite all checks, managed to fry my precious Jazz controller on first hookup. Any ideas?

Hey flyyyer
I retrieved several similiar motrs from some Lexmark color laser printers. How did you get the can loose from the shaft? It looks like it is just pressed on there.
As to the fried controller, was the motor pulling too much current thru it maybe?? I have fried my share of stock and rewound motors but no controllers, yet:)

I haven't even tried, I use the shaft as it is. That way, I'm avoiding issues of the shaft not holding on the can afterwards. You're right, it's just pressed on, I even pressed it a bit back, and just put a 6mm prop adapter on the can side, so the motor is mounted backward. On the other side sits a 6mm i.d. wheel collar to retain the can on the stator.
EDIT: Just retested everything - and it runs fine!
I built the motor following ideas and dimensions on www.powerditto.de. Going to use 6s LiPos, 14x8.5 Prop, Measurements to follow.

As for frying your controller, first message in this thread. The checks and tests may save you from frying your controller or motor. Thread is active, bookmark it for future refence and subscribe to it:

flyyyer,

Sweet! I have a Phasor 740 Laser Printer sitting in my garage right now! They were throwing it out at work, so I brought it home in the hopes that there might be a decent motor inside. Now I find out there are 2 decent motors inside! :D

I have been waiting to tear it down, since the last 5 laser printers have proven to be a disappointment.

Thanks for posting the info!
