Hi guys.

I'm interested in something that would have equivalent performance to the Mega 16/15/4 on a 6 * 4 prop. Inrunner, outrunner doesn't matter to me, but it needs to be direct drive as there's no space for a gearbox. The motor needs to fit in a 400 sized hole.

Is that possible in a self-made motor? If so, how would it be done?

I don't know much about this, but I'm prepared to learn. The kv of this Mega is 2100.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I"m not really sure what you are asking here.....

The Mega 16/15/4 is a direct drive replacement for a speed 400 and turns a 6x4 on 8 to 10 cells with no trouble. Its a great motor, well made and easily purchased on-line for less than 95 bucks shipped. If you want the performance of the 16/15/4 buy one.

People also sell them occasionally in the forsale section for 65 to 75 bucks used.

If you are looking for something very similar but a bit cheaper, try the Warp 3 or 4. A search for warp will get you more info. I found one here: http://www.aircraft-world.com/shopexd.asp?id=2774
I think they are around 80 bucks shipped.

Hope that helps. N_G

Thanks Nutty_Gnome

I'm quite prepared to buy the mega. But before I do, I wanted to check whether it was possible to make something like that? I've heard a lot of people raving about Cd-Rom motors and even multi-stators etc.

I was wondering if it's possible to "roll your own" and get anywhere near the performance of that Mega?

"I was wondering if it's possible to "roll your own" and get anywhere near the performance of that Mega?"

I dont know the real answer to that one, but my initial thought is no, you can't easily manufacture your own with the same electrical constants, performance, size, and form factor. I may be wrong, and hopefully someone will drop in and help you out. N_G

Yes it is possible! There is a thread in the power systems forum titled $30 mega beater which gives information on this very subject. Basically it is a GBx2 with curved magnets from StrongRCmotors.com, details on winding can be found in the thread.

MTwallet claims to have a double stator custom CDR capable of similar performance to the /4. I believe his setup was something like 5 turns using 3 strands of 26 gauge wire. Not sure if it was wired in wye or delta though. Seems promising, for $30. Just do a search for "$30 mega beater"
