Here is a link to my projects.... http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=446084 I got it flying very well but I am pushing the motors hard and I just had my second one quit on me while I was about 20 feet up! Any way I started to build my larger brushless on and it is looking very wild, it should fly very nice! I will have pics soon. I am very excited about this type of aircraft and I don't even want to touch my helis and planes anymore, everyone has to build these! I also started a 4 rotor brushed version. I would like to see other peoples projects in this VTOL forum!

Here is a pic of my bigger one, it has a bit of crash damage! It flew VERY nice, just sat in the air and didn't even move! On one of my flights I got close to the wall and hit it but there was no damage, when I took it up again it was out of trim so I guess on of the rotors got tilted slightly from the wall impact, so when I was adjusting the trims about 3' off the ground she went in again because I was looking at the radio....dumb! :o Anyway I was going to finish the body and gear on this one but I have other ideas to build it better and stronger, I may even go with outrunners. I am also waiting on my mixers for my 4 rotor project! I will post that pic up as well.

Go outrunner I recommend PJS seems to hae the best thrust to weight ratio I can find. Though AXI are probably more efficient and definateley another choice.
I think once you go Outrunner direct drive you will never go back. That said I found the geared motors might give you something outrunners don't but the smooth sound of an outrunner can't be beat.
I am using the Cemech Marathon 200HT and I was dissapointed at first untill I kept putting longer and longer props and as long as I kept the pitch at 4 this motor worked great. (still need to install a motor calc type program)
I had this swingin a 16x4 gas prop with decent draw but the gas props suck for low RPM.

I was thinking about CustomCDR motors because I love them, I just need something with a KV of 1000 or more for my ESC's to work right, any ideas in the 10-11" prop range?

What should I expect from this combo? Any guess as to what kind of thrust to expect?:
SK400XT: Brushless outrunner from Hobby Lobby
http://www.hobby-lobby.com/brushless-skatty.htm
EPP1047: About the only counter-rotating pair of props out there. APC has several pushers (and their tractor conterparts) but are all "Sport-Props". Maybe that won't make any difference with this motor?
2S LIPO: If I can help it, I'd rather stick with 2S.
Thoughts, opinions, and suggestions greatly appreciated.

My guess would be about 15-20oz thrust on 3S and 10-15oz on 2S with the GWS 1045 props, but this is just a guess. :p Send them an e-mail and see what they say.

I did. They haven't responded yet.
But Dr Kiwi tested his last night with a 10x5. And YOWZA!
6.9v, 7.70A, 53W, 5550rpm, 26.3mph, 396g, 13.94oz, 7.47g/W
7.4v, 8.25A, 61W, 5790rpm, 27.4mph, 427g, 15.04oz, 7.00g/W
You're right in the ballpark. ;) A three or four-rotor flying thing should be quite a handful with these. Eh? :D
For the record, I fat-fingered my post when I asked about a EPP1047. :o What I really wanted to know was about a 10x4.5 - ala "Counter Rotating Pair":

Looks like they would be great motors! I wish I would get my props in so I could fly my 4-Play!

How do yo control rotation due to propellor torque with a 3-rotor design like this? i.e. during forward flight how to you point the nose a different direction?

One motor can tilt with a servo to give you a rudder type control.
