I helped a guy build one of those in Auburn for and AIAA paper. It was a pretty tricky beast and we made a ton of changes to the original build techniques. It was built to just slide around on the ground a little bit. Never really "flew" it like it was suppose to be flown for fear of destroying it and not getting the stuff for the paper. I might can hunt up a few pictures or something.

I wouldn't say that. I had no experience with WIG's and the other guy, Robert, had never done anything RC before. We followed some advise from another more experienced balsa builder. We built it light and didn't plan on going over watter. It flipped once and damaged the tail a little bit (we built it too light/weak). Robert got scared and didn't want to damage it before he got his data. Also we ran low on time and wouldn't have had time to rebuild if something real bad happened.
There were some stability issues but I think they could have been worked out. I don't think we ever got it up to a good speed either. It was more hanging on the front to motors that flying in ground effect.
All that to say my experience is very limited with it and couldn't give you a real opinion of how well it performs. I am very interested to here how your experience goes with it.
