Hiya Michael. Its been ages since I saw an HFM deep-dive! I had one as a kid, when they first came out, and had loads of fun with it. Its bound to be still at my parents house somewhere. I also had the HFM frigate and two 590 yachts, one of which is still in the garage. The frigate however, got melted by an ex-girlfriend. It was sitting on the fireplace, looking great, and she turned on the gas fire without moving the boat first. Guess why shes an EX- girlfriend!???? Barry.

Hiya there, glad to see someone else posted here at last. I have a Mardave mini stock car, It must be about 20 years old now, but still goes like a rocket with my 14 turn triple wound Trinity motor on 8.4v!!
I always fancied the Tamiya mini, but unfortunatley I got into expensive planes and the budget for it was axed. Some day though. Barry.

Hello from London,

I'm currently scratch building my first rc out rigger boat but my heart lies in planes. Foam planes usually as they are cheap to break,

I have a couple of 3d flyers,
a hydrofoam,
depron f-14,
Own design flying wing,
A novelty flying car, general lee from somewhere on this forum from Steve Sloper I believe

I also have a 1:8 scale rc buggy nitro which keeps me out of trouble when it's too windy to fly.

Hi all,
I'm based in Essex and been doing this crazy RC thing for almost a year. I started with a Hummingbird micro electri heli (why make things easy!!). Then a Dragonfly XRB which was my first taste of success. Soon after I converted a 30 class glow Hirobo Shuttle to electric power (awesome!!!). I'm into electric planes too now. I've had some success with small trainer types and am just about to complete a 44inch span twin electric. Fun, fun, fun. You can see some pics and stuff on my website if you're interested, just click on the RC aircraft link: www.btinternet.com/~mike.hanlon

Hello All,

I'm into RC yacht racing at a club near Brechin. We all sail International One Meter (IOM) two channel yachts, the biggest growing and most competitive class in the world. There are six active IOM clubs in Scotland and about two hundred spread around the UK.
IOM sailors do it quietly! ;)

Cheers

Hi Ralph, Ive never sailed a 1m, but I have twa marbleheads, a 6m, and twa A class yachts. They are either free sail( not even vane gear), Vane steered, or radio. I belong to the Wick Model Yacht Club, and we sail at Sarclet loch, 4 miles south of Wick. The loch is a mile long, and a race consists of up to the far end and back, not once, but TWICE. This is all done wearing chest waders at a running or jogging pace.
The club is about to start sailing radio control, and if it does, it will no longer be the worlds ONLY free sailing club in existance. Barry.

Hey all,
Been toying with the idea of starting this crazy hobby for a few years. Bought my first plane when I was 15 - a Flair Cub 4ch foam wing for i.c power. Never finished the thing and I think it's still sitting in the loft. Might go back to it sometime in the future. Got my second about this time last year - tried to run before I could walk though and bought a GWS A-10 :p Pranged it on it's maiden flight (kinda hairy in the air then messed up the landing). Completely destroyed the nose and tore the engine nacelles off. I'm going for third time lucky with my GWS estarter that I've recently finished - just waiting for some decent flying weather.

Hopefully if all goes well with that I've got a proper build project lined up - a 50" span Tucano (Electric 600 size motor).

Hiya Jim, Theres a good amount of us Scots here. Music to ma lugs!
I got the avatar from doing a "google" image search on "saltire", and picked the one that was animated. Im very proud of my nation, and love to let the world know it!
Besides- Were liked around the world, more than just being a "brit"
No offense to ma pals sooth o e wall.

Beefy- Your going to have a lot more luck with the e-starter, its a very stable trainer, and they repair easily, even at the field, using araldite 5 min epoxy(red and white tubes), or araldite instant clear(yellow syringe pack), which dries in 90 seconds. I have numerous gws planes, and they just keep going till theres not much left but epoxy!
Its great to hear your experiences guys, keep it coming.
Barry.

Gotta love the scots - some of the nicest people I've ever met!!! My best mate at uni was Scottish and man did he like to let people know about it...he used to walk round Farnborough town centre in his kilt and Scotland rugby top! Could drink like a fish and swear like a sailor, lol! Quality bloke!

Hey Barry thanks for the tip - just as well I've got a decent supply of Araldite in the ol' model box. Just need a bit of decent weather and I'll be sorted, hopefully it'll be before I get in the Air Force 'cos I doubt I'll get much of a chance for some time after that.

hi all uk members, i'm in northamptonshire and been in the hobbie for a few years now on and off. starting with r/c cars. all tamiya kits including madcap, manta ray and a escort cosworth. then i gave it up. then last year my little boy wanted a r/c car so we got him 1 and i admit the tx controller was in my hands more then his. well i came across a nicco r/c sabaru inpreza about 1/12 scale which i bought and started the hobby again. then as well as that i started flying foamies. first was a cc-lee rambler which didn't like much of a breeze and spent most of the time slamming or in tree's so that was a great start, but i'm not quitting there. me and my brother have just got a GWS spitfire and just in the process of building it up. i must say i'm looking forward to flying it. well i hope to see more fellow uk members on here.

Hi Michael, and welcome to the groups!! A wee word of warning about the gws spitfire there tho Michael. I bought one as my third gws plane, and it flew for a total of 10 seconds before writing itself off! Im not saying its a bad plane, quite the contrary, its just fantastic, but it does need a lot of experience to fly it.
I started off in planes after being into boats and cars since an early age, and my first was a cc lee j3 cub.I then got a gws BN2 islander, and it was just brill. It taught me about flying with aelirons. I then got the spit, and it got trashed as soon as I tried to fly it! I then got a GWS tigermoth 400, which taught me loads about mild aerobatics. After it was trashed, I got a GWS formosa, and ive got to say that it taught me the most about flying out of all the planes ive had.
If you can, id recommend getting the gws e-starter for training purposes, and move onto the spit when your confident enough with the e-starter. "Confident" means you can fly and land without crashing about 95-99% of the time!
This way you wont end up getting cheesed off with flying and give it up before youve even started.
P.s.- get yourself a brushless "bell" motor and lipo batterys from the start if you can. more power can mean less crashes and an easier to fly plane. motor and speedo is only £20 from brc hobbies in newcastle.
I hope ive helped you out a wee bit, and I hope you get a lot of satisfaction from the hobby, Barry.

hi there rcminiman. many thanks for the tips and advice, i must admit i'm abit nervous of the outcome of the spitfire maiden flight as i've seen so many posts within this forum about the spitfire. Stories of sucsessful and unsucsessful flights with the spitfire. i know there the c of g factor to work on, which i can't do just yet as i'm still building and waiting for the r/c gear to put in. I suppose i did chose the wrong aircraft to start with, as i said in my last post, the only flyin time i got was with a cclee rambler but i admit it spent most of the time on the ground. i found this to be underpowered (my thoughts) and needed a no wind day to fly it. i jumped in at the deep end and got the spitfire because im a warbird fan and for the price of the kit its a good deal (again my thought). we shall see what its like, and i have visions of a disaster from the start but we all learn somewhere. if the unfortunate does happen the i shall take your advice and start with a near on beginner trainer to learn the ropes with. i'll keep you informed on the progress and first flight, which i hope to be real soon

fingers crossed

well i got all the readio gear installed into the spitfire and took it for a maiden. well to sum it up i got about 5 seconds of flight time and bash into the ground it went, bent the propshaft and broken prop. i was using 7.2v 650mah AAA battery packs and it seemed underpowered. so that ended that day. I upgraded to 8.4v packs and changed from 8x4 prop to 9x7 prop and took it for a second flight, this time with my mate who is an experianced model flying pilot. he took the controls and hand launched the spitfire with full throttle and again got about 5 - 10 seconds flight before it hit the deck snapping the tail off, so that ended that. so now i've taken rcminiman advise and bought a GWS beaver for training and i tell you what, in glad i did. its so far had about total of 4-5 hrs flight on it already. from here i shall go to the e-started and then get a formosa. well battery packs are about charged so i'm off to get some more flying hours

see ya all soon

Well done Michael!!
Im sorry to hear about the spit tho, but it will repair once youve mastered the formosa.
The beaver is a great plane. I have one fitted with my own design floats, with a foam aeliron wing by me as well. Its great fun, and the floats come off/ standard wing goes on for some lazy floaty sessions on calm evenings.
Youre on the right road now, and should become a good flier in due course.
You have to get used to the crashes though, there will be loads more to come!
Good luck.
Barry.

HELP !!!! Need more southern members on here to catch up with the north. lolol. well i'm still very happy flying the beaver. had many flights with it now and loving every minuite of it. i've been tempted to go for an e-starter. i've followed the beaver forums on here and carried out some of the mods. next on my list is to upgrade the landing gear wire, how flimsy is that. every time i land i just nose over as the wheels bow out. still looking at the spitfire i have to see about getting in the air again but uuuummmm i'll stick with the beaver for now. well like malcolm says it doesn't matter where we all from. at the end of the day, its nice to see fellow modellers from the uk on here, and who knows one day we may have a community going like the states. just one question though about the northern. is there many clubs or flyers that are into slope soaring? wouldn't mind giving that a go, but not many big hills here. well see ya all soon

Hiya Guys :)
Glad to meet you all. Nice to see RC Peeps from all over GB!

I'm about to get into Mini RC Helis. Was a little into RC Helis some 20 years ago (£900 ShuttleZ+Topline TX etc) but sold it :( after getting married and starting a family. I want to get back into it (though electric this time!) but haven't the same funds I did when i was single! :o ..lol
So was looking at a HBCP2 -6ch but slowly leaning towards a T-Rex ;)

I'm 'genning up' on various T-Rex kits, suppliers, dealers etc so hopefully I'm informed enough when I do decide which one and where from!

Just bought the Realflight G3  so can practise while deciding which kit etc.
Nice to meet you all!

(This is a great site for RC-ers and the posts are a great read!...and some very entertaining! :D )

Hi all.
I am in the NE london area.
I am a born again model flyer. I am old, and it is my birthday today. Years ago I used to fly mainly gliders/soarers. I have sailing boats and if I tell you one is over 30 years old and 2 years ago I re radioed it. It is a Graupner Collie. (Any one got a plane that old that still flys? ) I also have a Billings Drakon that was supposed to be a display model but I converted it into a RC sailer. I have a RC Laser sailing boat that I am trying to sell at the moment.
Last year I decided to get another aircraft. I was amazed at the RTF models and to me cheap. I was going to get a Wing Dragon, but the guy in the shop did not have one in stock and recomended me the Firebird Freedom. (I hate that guy) This plane has been a pig. It has a habit of tip stalling. I have done mods to it as recomended on another model site. I have even built washout into the wings. But I have yet to try it.
I am now looking into buying another RTF, but can't make up my mind.

Hi Dundeeguy

This from another 'Dundee guy'. Frae 'Doon the Ferry'. Try and visit the model flying club at Barry Buddon any Sunday that the weather is good enough. You may need to blag your way past the MOD sentry, as it is on ministry land.
I am not a 'flyer' myself. I'm into R/C yacht racing, but found the tail end of this thread by mistake. I understand that this local club has all the facilities and qualified members to give you any info and encouragement that you may require.

Checking in! Just found this regional forum by accident (have been on here nearly three years).

Just posted a suggestion in the main site that it is highlighted that there are regional forums.

Me? My dad was a big free flight modeller, I got in to radio slope soaring in Fife and then power RC through a Flair Cub (flown at Barry Buddon).

Have a full size glider (old one) and a share in a Tiger Moth (even older) but keep fiddling with models!

Current flyable models in the loft (some without radio gear) are:

Flair 1/4 scale Tiger Moth - OS FS120
Veron 50" Tiger Moth - OS FS40
Mercury 33" F/F Tiger Moth -Mills 0.75 Diesel
Hacker CO2 Tiger Moth - Gasparin 120

Did I mention I like Tiger Moths a bit?!!)

Chris Foss Wots Wot - ASP 61
Chris Foss Middle Phase
SAS Thing - Unbreakable
Flair Sunrise 100S
Mig 29 PSS
GWS A-10
Balsacraft Spitfire (plus three unbuilt kits)
Gebhart Candy Acro- HLG
Kyosho Swing - HLG
Ripmax (Balsacraft) Extra Slim Twin - Thunder Tiger 42's - madness!!

On the building board - Brian Taylor Spitfire for Laser 75 (long project)
Pat Teakle 1/4 scale Slingsby Vega - a free gift and repaired ready for the slope.

My one outing in to helicopters was a Twister Bell which was eaten by a Jack Russell at the gliding club just as I was starting to have fun with it!!!

I can see from the list that I need to see a doctor!

Cheers

Gary

I only just found this forum too, through getting involved in the Oz one. They've got 886 threads and over 20,000 posts in theirs and there's rarely less than a dozen on their forum at a time. Why aren't we using ours?

I'm in the hills of Derbyshire and came back to the sport after a 35 year lay-off, mostly been flying small electric (in turn mostly GWS - won't have hardly a word said against them) but last year got started into sloping which I'm really enjoying.

Too many planes, too little time.

They have got rid of the flags now (which I didn't realise were links) and added a regional tag so we might see more activity.

Can't claim any advanced modelling skills I'm afraid - its one of these:

http://www.bmi-models.com/site/index.php?p=2 - the smaller version.

No-one imports them to the UK so I got mine via eBay off a German dealer but there are several dealers on mainland Europe who handle them.

This is a BMI DVII which you can get in the UK but its a foamie.

I fancy the Fieseler Storch in the crunchie range

Mar 05, 2007, 04:58 PM
Strange that one Roger BMI are imported to the UK, I have one of their gliders in the garage, looks like they don't do all the range.

Roger Lombard
Mar 06, 2007, 03:57 PM
You're right. Some BMI stuff is imported (I forget who by but not Ripmax or Perkins) but none of it seems to be crunchie. See, here's one that would like familiar to you and I - in fact extremely familiar :D
http://www.bmi-models.com/site/index.php?i=3601

Its complicated by the fact that BMI themselves act for other manufacturers such as GWS and indeed CMpro but the glider doesn't appear on CMPro page of the BMI website

Can anyone else throw any light on this?

and it gave me quite a few more grey hairs before i gave up and bought a
lama 2 coax heli that must be one of the easiest helis to fly but fixed wing has
drawn me to buy a gws e-starter that gets such good reviews here looking forward to building and flying it. I also have a few boats

kyosho jetstream refitted with 700bb motor & flex drive.

Hi,

From suffolk,

I used to race slotcars, then went onto mardave v12's, stockcars and others. Had a few tamiya's too, monster beetle, boomerang, 2xvery fast tuned avante's and the tamiya mini cooper.

Also got mini sub, mini cars, mini tanks, mini boats etc, all great fun, especially the 3xmini combat tanks with infra red fire.

As for flying vehicles. I've got

PiccoZ mini heli
Bladerunner heli
X-TWIN bi-plane

Also got 2 flydrofoams on order for some fun. REally wanted a boat or a plane. So, as I got these at a reasonable price RTF, figure if they don't fly that well I can use them as a boat and still get RTF 4 channel plane somewhere.

Hi folkies and fellow Scots!
I am near Fraserburgh and fly either on my croft or at the Buchan Aeromodellers field just outside Fetterangus. Just getting back into the hobby after a 15 year break! Currently flying some electric stuff and a few 6ft span warbirds.
Love to hear from others round about my area!

Hi
I'm from sunny Cambridge, well halfway to Ely up the river Cam actually.
I refuse to list the different models I own as my wife may find out and want more maintenance. (We keep our marriage sweet by living 30 miles apart).
But there are lots of planes a mix of I/C and electric, my darling wife has custody of the I/C planes as there is not room on my boat for them, yet :(
The electric ones live with me along with the R/C boats that don't get enough usage, I suppose living on a boat takes some of the fun out of the models, and then there are the cars,
Some 1/8 stock cars of various ages, but not raced yet,
a few Mardave marauders,
And the 1/12 oval carpet racers, at least one of each class some more than one, plus a Pinky reliant robin with a Bond bug shell for display use only.
I do race the 1/12 stock cars and the 1/12 saloon stock and until recently I raced the reliant against mardave V12s until all the local V12 owners put bumpers on, put 6 cells in and went saloon stock racing. I am toying with putting bumpers on the Reliant But with 6 cells it is scary on an oval track :D

Hey ClydeBuilt, I had a look through your site, very impressive! I am not into boats any more, but I can certainly appreciate the models which you have and the skill and time spent on them! Keep up the good work, any branch of our hobby which does well, will eventually pay dividends in the other branches, be it helis', planes, cars or boats!

Hi Databhoy, it was quite a process to go through! I can 't remember exactly how i did it, but there is a thread on here somewhere that tells you how to do it, i will see if i can find it and then will post it here!

Right Databhoy, here is some info which i have managed to uncover! It is courtesty of Brazilnut and i have just copy and pasted it here, i hope that he does not mind!

Avatar

Go to the top of this page, click on the "My RCGroups" link. You should then be on the page that controls all the options for this site. Click on the "Edit Options" link. On the very bottom of this page is a section called Avatars. Click on the "Add Avatar" botton, and that will take you to a page where you can upload a file from your computer.

Avatars need to be no bigger than 75x75 pixels, and the saved file can't be any larger than 20k. Reduce your file to 75 pixels by 75 pixels, and then first save it as a jpeg. Use as much compression as you can (you usually have a number choice for saving jpegs, the lower the number, the higher the compression). If the saved file is still over 20k (easy to do), then try saving it as a gif.

You can also have your avatar read from your own website (as opposed to uploading it onto the RCGroups website), but this requires that you have a website, can successfully upload files to it, and can accuarately type in the picture's link on the avatar page. Instructions for all of this would take FAR too long to type, and would beWAY off topic.

I hope this helps you!
Andy.

Hello Barry. Just joined and thought I'd reply to you. I'm just outside Aberdeen
and like vintage aircraft models, 40,s to 70's although I have w.w.2 and modern flying stuff as well. We fly at Mintlaw which is a few miles inland from Peterhead. One of my flying chums, Andy, quite often goes up to Dornoch and flys with the group there. He says the field there is very good, and busy. His girl friend lives in that area.
What type of models do you fly? Have you a club there?
Did you know about the scottish aeromodellers site? If you go SAA and then clubs you will get a list of most clubs in Scotland. Nearly all has forums
and is a great interclub communication tool, if you sign up. Ours is Buchan Aeromodellers. I fly quite a bit down at the Montrose club, where I like to test new stuff. They have a very large area, enough for small full size.
Going back to to get my restored super 60 ready for painting now,but hope to hear from you soon.
Regards, Graeme.

hi andy, yeah the devenick site is still in use, in fact the scottish heli nats are still held there too, though i think it suffers from very low advertising, espescially since GTI Models closed down :(

Hey Phil, i got a shock last year when i went down to aberdeen to pop into GTi and then discovered that they were gone! I was one of the folks that helped them move from the old shop in rosemount down into baker street, that was of course a wee while ago though!!

yeah it was sad to see them go, i remember when i was about ten or eleven seeing the first electric RC bike at their store, they were running it on the pavement outside and i was with my mum in the baker next door, from then on i've been into RC :D, we've also lost brian shirrefs too so we have no RC hobby shops in aberdeen at all now :(

Hello all.

Great to see Uk a modelers section alive on such an international forum.
Personally, I'm an RC car racer/messaround-er. And all this talk of crashing planes and sinking subamirines, (eh? They're designed to sink! What ever next!? )
No wives around to keep tally, but I'm often a skinflint and buy up second hand stuff, because I like to fix it. In fact, now I'm wondering why I worry about the planes!

History:
Static model builder from about '63 onwards, first Scalextric when I was 12! :)
'68 Joined Folkestone slot car club, scratch built chassis and co., for several yrs.
'84 ish Canterbury ORRC
All 1/10, mostly off road buggys.
'84? Tamiya Wild One 2wd (new)
Learn to drive with one of these and most everything else is a pice of cake! ;)
'85 Kyosho Rocky 4wd
Strong car, I added my own design chain tensioner, and R.I.S.E to the rear.
'86> Kyosho Optima 4wd. Had at least two of these, one with full custom chassis and suspension. Brilliant for it's age!
Mardave Ministox 2wd(rear) carpet racer. Almost indestructible, luckily.
'B' Associated RC10 2wd. The best ever. Love it love it love it!
'L' Kyosho Optima 'Mid' 4wd. So easy to drive.
'U' Yokomo Dogfighter 4wd. Even better, and better engineered.
'R' Scratch built front wheel drive chassis using mostly early Optima stuff.
Got banned from the 2wd class.
'R' Began studying at the Skinflint Uni, and sold most of it off.
'E'
'D
Mid 90's went Scalextric club racing around Kent for a few yrs. Some of my modifications weren't allowed to race!
'99 Moved to Exeter, heard about the local RC car club in '05
Yokomo TC4 4wd touring car, now a drifter.
Schumacer Bosscat 4wd, haven't even run it. :o
Associated RC10 B2 2wd buggy
Associated RC10 T2 2wd stadium truck, nothing jumps better!!
Associated RC10 !! Just like my first one, but bought way cheaper from USA on ebay!
XRAY T2EVO touring car chassis. Can an engineered toy car be a work of art? Ohhyuss!
I'm not racing at all at the moment, and just go drifting very occasionally. Also going to try my hand at building a 'Rock Crawler' this year.

Pete.

Morning folks! :)
Just thought i'd add my bit and say hello!
I live near Stratford On Avon and have been flying since April 2007.
I have a couple of low wing acrobatic planes, a flying wing and a couple of foam pusher jets.
I want to get a warbird, something like the Harvard AT-6 or maybe the Skyraider, told the AT-6 has a habit of biting you when you least expect it though. Typical as i was about to buy the model when i found out!! :(

Hi guys, just though i would introduce myself!
I live in Norfolk on the east coast near GT Yarmouth. I have been aero modeling since i was a kid. I started with control line and still have my trusty old Mercury War Lord with a PAW 2.49 up front. I have dabbled in most area's of the sport except Ducted fan / Jet etc. I currently fly mostly electric aerobatic models fixed wing and i have a Mini titan EP Heli / Thundertiger Raptor 50 V2 Titan fully blinged up with OS 50 Hyper. The later spends most of its time in the inverted hover as iv recently cracked the manouver :D
I have just purchased and Multiplex Fox chucky to convert into a RC slope soarer (as per latest RCM&E) as i havent done much RC gliding lately and thought the fox looked rather cute.
Just lately I have taken an interest in First person view and this is my next big venture..watch this space! :)
As well as model flying im a keen full size pilot both glider and power. I started gliding at 15 (24 years ago :censored: ) and have been power flying since 2003. Currently own a schleicher k6Br Vintage glider G-DDRY (as per my profile Pic) Restored by me during 2003-2006 and have a part share in a Rolason Condor G-AVAW soon to change to a Robin DR400 G-OTIB.
I joined the RAF as a Airframes Technician in Jan 1987 left the Mob in Jun 2000 and now work in the Oil and Gas industry as a Instruments Tech based on a gas compression platform in the Southern North Sea. Why is it the best flying days always seem to be when im stuck Offshore

Stegsmith - I've been to that club to see what it was like - its Ok. They should be able to give you all the help and training you need. The 3 guys there (midweek flyers) were very helpful but I'm a leccy guy only. Good luck.
