Hello all-

I just picked up an Airtonics Thermal Eagle (RG-15), and was thinking of using the transparent shaded Ultracote Lite on the wings and tail, rather than the Minwax treatment. I am looking for the pros/cons of each, and also wondering about how they compare weight wise.

The plane will be my first winch launch plane, and will be flown over a large very nice grass field, which could be wet at times... I fly a LOT of slope, but doubt that this plane will see any slope action, except for maybe maiden to set CG before the first winch ride. Any other specific build tips would be appreciated, too.

Thanks,
Target

Not sure if you have seen this but DJAerotech has pretty extensive information on this in the Q&A under covering for the Chrysalis MKII:

It probably depends somewhat on whether the tensile strength of the covering is needed to strengthen or stabilize the structure.

No, I hadn't viewed that. Thanks for the link.

I don't think the strength is the issue, as the instructions recommend the Minwax/paint, so I would think that any type of iron on covering would just be some slightly better scratch protection....
I'll check out the link, thanks.

I guess I should have stated that the Eagle has fully sheeted wings and tail, over foam, with some fiberglass reinforcements in between wher deemed necessary. The issue with the covering is moisture/scrape protection, not additional torsional strength coming from the covering, as you need in an open bay construction.
But some good info was gleened from Don's website, thanks.

I'm leaning towards the Ultracote Lite right now.
