cant see why it should not work. Any decent Tx should do the trick, provided you get the right crystals...

Thanks, arukum17, that helps. I made a boo boo on the Futaba model number, it's not a 4YP, it's a 4YF. I think I better go change it on my original posting.

Depending on your goals, this radio will be adequate, but there are better choices. The 4YF has very very limited features.
I presume you are talking about something like a Spirit or a Gentle Lady or something that can accept standard sized servos and receiver.
If you are flying a 2M R/E or RES plane, then just about anything will fly it. A 3 channel AM radio will do fine at $50. Then you save up for a computer radio.

I see the 4YF radio sells for about $120:
This radio lacks ATV/EPA or any kind or V tail or Elevon mixing. This radio does not have much to offer for the money.

For the same price, $117, the Hitec Laser 4 has a richer fearure set including AVT/EPA, elevon and V tail mixing which may be useful on your next plane.

Computer Radios are a better choice.
I would suggest you spen a few $$ more and get a computer radio that will carry you much further and bring a much richer feature set to your 2M plane, parkflyers and more complex gliders.
For $150, about $30 more you can get the Futaba 4 EXA

4 model memories, EPA, dual rates, Expo and more. That is a HUGE jump in features for $30
Stretch $10 more For $160 you get the Hitec Flash 5SX
you pick up a 5th channel and the ability to put two ailerons on separate channels for flappersons, or to have a plane with landing gear or flaps.
If you can consider stretching even a little further than $160 there are others.
For $120, I don't think the Futaba 4Y is a good choice. These others are better choices.
If you are on a very limited budget, get the 3 channel radio at $50 to get you going on this plane, then save up your $$ for a computer radio as your next step for your next plane.

Thanks for the info, Ed. Actually, the reason I asked is that I just picked up one of these TXs in good condition off ebay for $45. I was thinking of useing it for simple 2 and 3 channel gliders/powered gliders like the Gentle Lady and Tom Martin's Thermic 50 Laser kits. For more elaborate planes I have a Futaba Skysport 6A TX.

Hi Ed;
I still appreciated the info you gave me. It gave more complete info about the Futaba 4YF transmitter than just 'it will work' or 'it won't work for what you entend to use it on'. :)
Next Holiday? HAPPY NEW YEAR :D
