Hi, my name is Anton. I am 32 years old and live in St Kilda, Melbourne. I enjoy slope soaring and electric gliders, and I'm also quite partial to beer brewed by Belgian Trappiste monks. I like nothing better than to head for the hills on a balmy summer day, strap on my Teutonic P4000 Tx with its oh-so-comfortable 'cross-your-heart' shoulder harness, throw planes off the edge until dark, and then drink ice-cold beers from the eski while being chauffeured home. :)

I like those Belgium Trappiste Monk beers too. :D very nice drop.
Nothing better than sitting on the slope on a hot summers afternoon with the cool seabreaze blowing on your face flying the afternoon/evening away. And a coldy stashed away for the inevitable "its getting too dark to fly, lets talk about planes instead" discussion that occurs at the sessions close. :D

Cheers Shaun, I'll drink to that. ;)
BTW, seeing as you're here, thought I should mention that I maidened the Omega this evening at a flat field. Only had about 10-15 mins stick time over 2 short flights due to some glitching (I think relating to the location, not so much the plane or radio setup), but the performance looks very promising. It certainly slowed up nicely for landings with the flaps. I'm off to the coastal slopes for a 4 day break on Sunday so I'll give it a more thorough test then.

Hi,
I'm Michael, almost 36 years old and from Sydney.
I'm a 100% electric flyer and have flown sport planes and electric gliders but my passion is helicopters.
I've been flying RC for nearly 2 years now but i can remember pouring over the Tamiya catalogue when i was a kid and borrowing books from the library about model helis way back in the eighties.
It's taken a long time but i'm finally getting to fulfil those childhood dreams of flying RC.
Is it just me or is the median age of RC flyers over 30? We're all big kids at heart.

I'm Paul, living up in North Queensland, inland from Townsville. Been flying models since I was 5 (a good 27 years ago).
Mostly these days I design models and run my online R/C shop ( http://nqrc.com ) where I sell GWS gear as well as some other brands.
Some of you may have already seen a couple of my designs, perhaps the most known is the QuickFlick-II DLG.
Nice to see Australia get its own forums.

I dont get the opportunity to fly too often these days but I still buy heaps and could rival a few LHS with my stock pile of kits and gear.
After selling a few at the club auction recently I still have 21 aircraft ready to fly (fully kitted out ready to charge & go).
I mainly fly slope whether it's scale, sport or my passion, PSS models. I also dabble with electric models as its easier to drive the 5 minutes to the power field than the 2 hours to my preferred slopes.
I hope to see you on the slopes.

Hi guys,
I'm Rebecca, from Sydney, gliding down at HSL. The planes resting in the hanger now include:
* an Great Planes NexStar Select .46 powered trainer
* an Spirit Elite 2M glider, built up (flaps and ailerons w/ wing in a polyhedral config)
* an First 2M 2 channel glider, which is about 50% complete.
* an First+, modified to include flaps. This is one fast ship!
* and a new addition for Christmas, an Multiplex EasyGlider Electric.
I also sail competitively an International One Metre R/C sailing boat (attended the World Championships up in Mooloolaba recently), an Soling One Metre sailing boat, and a modified Seawind One Metre sailing boat.
I don't fly the NexStar Select all that much (I'm actually a bit disappointed with it), as it's had symmetry and power problems out of the box. *sigh*
I learnt to fly using the RealFlight G3 flight simulator - I use it most nights. Converting the techniques I've learnt on the simulator into real life practice is different, as the sim can only go _so_ far...
Cheers,

G'day all
I'm Mark 39 y/o been flying electrics for around 4 years now.
Had a few glo cars and boats years ago but always wanted to get into Planes.
I've built up a decent collection of planes and scratch built most of them .
Best thing I ever did was build a Hot wire setup that made building wings a snap.
I taught myself to fly by reading forums ,asking questions in forums or at clubs when I go to watch and good old FMS.
I'm not in a club yet but will be when I can afford it. I fly at a friends place mainly where there's a huge area of crown land behind his house. He flies there when ever the weather permits.
There's about 9 of us that fly there regularly and we treat it as a club. We have our own rules that we stick to and are based on common club rules.
It's all strictly Electric Only.
Most of my planes are Aerobatic models and my most recent addition is a
Precision Areobatics Katana Mini that had it's maiden just a few days ago.
What an Awesome plane.

We have some great slopes here and only a 5min trip from home and fly in the shade of the car. Just love slope aero's and fly an old Pilot kit Divine Wind, Jazz Extreme flying wing, and a Ferret Vtail is on the building board. Also fly power Boomerang 45 OS trainer ,electric Reach Whirl Wind 3D and a HobbyZone stryker S27 which slope soars extremely well with the prop removed and ballast added. I,m looking for an EPP Aerobatic Sloper of convential shape (just love Traditional Designs)but want the performance. Anyone built a "Toon's" in Aust?

The "Toons" is a 4.5m aerobatic glider from Aeromod in France (manufacturer of the popular Prodij and Miraj, among several others).
See here:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/aeromod.concept/Toon_fra.htm
I think that Chook was probably referring to the "Mini-Toons", which is a small (1.5m) EPP version of the Toons manufacturerd by EPP Concept (also in France).
See here:
http://eppconcept.free.fr/MiniToons.php
Both these planes are currently available, AFAIK, and they are both unique in their own way. The Toons is the largest commercially-available, all-molded glider that is purpose-built for aerobatics, while the Mini-Toons is the only commercially-available, aerobatic-specialist EPP glider that I'm aware of. I have yet to come across either model in Australia but there is now an importer of Aeromod models ( http://www.portfoxdesign.com/rc-sailplane/indexframe.htm ) so the big one is certainly obtainable and I'm sure that the smaller one would not be too difficult to ship from France in kit form. :)

I agree , It would be a snap to scratch build a Mini toon with the Cell88 or even using 19mm High density foam.
I have 3 scratch built slope sorers but have never been to a slope . It's something I know that I'm going to be hooked on after my first flight.

Thanks guys, your right it was the mini toons that I have my heart set on. Just need to track down the EPP foam locally. Also is it possible to get the websites translated to english easily. The Jazz Extreme is a Canterbury Sailplanes Kit and I helped my 13yr old build it. It flys particually well in all conditions and can be balasted with up to 200gms of lead (taped underneath on the CG) Boy it can take a belting hitting the ground and bouncing, its bullet proof. Have not had to make any repairs it just scuffs the covering tape. Many mid airs it justs spins a few revolutions and flys out. Really important to fit a lost model alarm as our slopes are covered in costal heath and when it dives in, it can be completely covered. They save heaps of searching. We try to fly every week sometimes after work. We get mostly a South East wind pattern at this time of year backing to SW in the arvo. Esperance is windy as we are on the top end of the roaring 40's so you can't retire here if you are a windmill. I'm 46 (a burnt out farmer) well I got hurt and now teach at the local Agricultural college.

Because I live on a grazing property I am a bit of a lone flyer, I just start my planes up in the shed and take off out the front of the house. As I live on 6000acres I have plenty of room I would welcome any body to come and have a fly with me.

Okisub,
I have to say, be it a Walkera, GWS Mini-Dragonfly or any of the other fixed-pitch micro helicopters, then it's going to be a fun time learning to fly on them. I've managed to learn to fly on a GWS Mini-dragonfly but it certainly wasn't a walk in the park. One thing I found to be rather useful was to use a simulator like the FMS along with a suitably twitchy model of the micro helicopters.

thanks PLDaniels,
I picked up a copy of G3 about 2 weeks ago from my LHS to practise and get my co-ordination happening and its already paid for its self in virtual crashes. The Walkera I bought is a #36, its CP and kind of a cross between a zap400 and a Trex, only the build quality is quite poor. I am having soo much fun with it though, just hopping around, trimming and repairing. Wasting hours...
pldaniels
Dec 30, 2005, 07:06 AM
Okisub,
Ah yes, G3 will certainly aid you quite a bit. The collective pitch aspect should at least make things a bit easier for you to fly in less than perfect conditions. On thing I find rather irritating about the fixed pitch helis is the lack of head-speed. I know I can trim my blades down but it would also be nice to actually just buy lower pitch blades too.
Goodness knows what you're trimming/nearly-killing with the heli, I know for myself I've crashed a few times avoiding the cat/dog as they get a bit too curious.
Paul.

I also run www.aussiejet.com as a side business and am planning on expanding my stock to cover electric jets as well. You know, I must either be a really terrible learner or my brother-in-law is a great learner, or having someone assisting you really helps when it comes to learning to fly these micro helicopters.
When I got my GWS mini-dragonfly I found myself crashing all over the place, admittingly it was in the confines of a 3m x 2m workspace, took me a good 7~10 recharges to get into a hover reliably.....
Tonight I took my BIL down to the local squash courts, a nice 6m x 6m sort of area, trimmed his helicopter, handed it over to him and he was hovering 2~3ft off the ground on his 2nd flight pack :-O. Prior to this I had put him on the FMS simulator with my GWS Dragonfly model for a few hours till he got used to it... but 2nd battery pack and hovering, never having flown any other model before, I'm shocked.

Okay guys, I'm off to my workshop and going to be doing some hacking around.
I'll be barefoot and not pregnant, slaving away like a good husband should be.
See you on the chat or on the WWW site.

G'day all
Im 17 in perth, and i was taught on glow about 2 years ago by my dad, and now for the last few months discovered (or more correctly rediscovered) electrics and brushless motors and their $$$$$$$$ controlling devices that only have an extra mosfet.
Anyways, got myself an outrage 3D bipe and now im making a vertigo 36" bipe. www.amjd.ch
Ive flown a severely converted glider now OS15 powered glider which i trained on. Its MUCH older than i am and its still going without a single crash, dad taught me on that.
THen i flew the top flite? Hustler Mk2, my aileron plane, and then it was straight to electrics. An underpowered twinjet, then a wattage stearman, and the outrage 3D.
We got ourselves a T-rex as well and startiing to fly that in some figure 8s.
THE BEST INVESTMENT was a flight sim. Reflex XTR. Taught me all my aerobatics, and i could hover my first 3D electric on the first real flight.
Flying was always fun, and still is, just need to keep my crashes at 0 to keep the wallet (dads) happy. Another good reason for a sim, you can crash to your hearts content and still not pay any more, and get it repaired in 0.1 sec
ITS GETTING late, so ill stop waffling on now.

Token Taswegian here,
Born with a TeeDee .049 instead of a silver spoon; Dad's influence since birth has seen me build and fly a bunch of 'planes the most memorable are listed
Heaps of weird and wonderful control-line using Cox & PAW engines
plus
RCM Trainer (049)
Hornet 1/2A racer
Ugly Stick (OS10)
Kavalier (.40 aerobat)
Jetta (RCM&E) .40 pattern ship with HP40 and pipe (brilliant combo)
Another Kavalier
Dogfight Double ME109 (landed on belly but looked and flew sublimely)
Nigel Hawes Speed400 Tucano
Nigel Hawes Speed 400 Spitty with hot brushless setup
Orange Box (RCM&E) 2 ch. glider
Prophet 2m
Prophet 941
Muller Escape with an extra set of Ellipse 3 wings
Nyx Furio (enormous fun with 1.5KG ballast)
Ricochet Bullet
Art Hobby Sierra (for sale if anyone interested) (see rctradingpage.com.au)
oh yes, the Mini Blade...every home should have one ;0)
I fly mostly gliders now but would like to build a 3D indoor model soon.
Due to go to LSF Jerilderie in June to harass the local eucalypts with expensive composite constructs ;0)
The slope flying here in Tas is above average...windy most days...coastal slopes here are fabulous.
If you need some info on where to fly slope in Tas. feel free to pm me.
regards,
Chris.

Hi - I'm Glyn. age? too old to remember but young enough not to care. Only got into this through accident (bumped into Brett on one of his long summer walks on the beach) and since have been poor and divorced (nearly). Started with a Beaver (no jokes, the Canadians have heard them all) and now onto wings and the latest a slow stick (yet to arrive) thanks to my pusher (Brett). Love the game and hope to get better at it soon (well in the next 30 years or so). See you guys on the slopes sometime maybe - Gluggy

Gluggy,
Welcome, both to RCGroups/Aus and of course the hobby - hope you're going to be enjoying the addiction for as long as a lot of us have been.
I really like the animated Aussie-flag in you avitar, will have to get myself something nice and patriotic like that I think.

Hey Mav, i love that video.
Can you tell us some about your setup. I found details of the plane at Warbirds-rc.com. What Fan, motor and cells are you using?
Warbird's blurb says it's a bungee launch model but your's hand launched seemingly without any problems.

This is the F 18 700 watt set up;
I have the following;
# Het 2W-20 700 watt motor
# 4s2p PQ 1800 20C lipos
# 45 amp CC ESC
# Wemotec 480 mini fan
You now have 700 watts and 1-1 thrust. Most powerful blow dryer you will ever get your hands on !!!!
Note most people go the 3s set up. But for about $60 bucks extra you get a 4s set up. That is the difference in price of a 4s pack compared to a 3s pack !!!!
www.warbirds-rc.com have everything you need. Note Warbirds also posted my Vid on their website under videos. My vid is top of list F 18 videos !!! The yanks love us !!!! :p :p :p :p

Hmmm........ I think the F18 might be my next project :)
I mostly fly helis and wanted to concentrate 100% on them but as much as i tried i couldn't stop thinking about fixed wing planes.
I've always wanted a bronco and i saw that Estar Models just released a bronco kit and just couldn't help myself.
So now i have a Bronco on the building board which will take all my time (and money) for the next few months at least.
700W sounds small to me because i'm so used to pouring over the figures for my heli. 10S2P LiPo with 400W hovering, 900W average and 2000W peaks.

Feb 06, 2006, 07:27 AM
Hi,
Ya33a from Brisbane, I've been flying off and on since about 1972 when I was in primary school, I had a Cox .049 Pt17 (Blue and yellow) that I saved 3 months to buy ($19.95 from Target) when I was 8 years old, my uncle had some really nice planes he designed and built himself from the late 50's to the early 1970's, he got back into it in the 1980's with a 1/4 scale quadra powered...something, I have a photo somewhere, he always had a control line plane hanging above his bed on 2 nails on the wall, I still remember the brittle tissue covered dope finish, a real work of art.
My PT17 lasted 1 flight, the guy helping to fly it 'an expert' put it in before it had done 1 circuit. I was so dissapointed I tried to fly the remains myself with some success, by holding the lines about 10' (3m) from the wing lead outs and whirling it around my head as hard as I could, I got giddy...I learned to start the engine next, till the 1.5 v cox battery fell apart, I got 2 'D' cells and fried the glow plug, didn't know that till many years later and after I poured most of the fuel through the engine and tank for about 3 weeks trying to start it.
I got the bug again in the late 1970's a couple of school friends were members of the local Model Aero Club, so I went along, I was hooked. I saved up and bought an Aeroflight Cherokee trainer kit with an OS 15, a handle and a pommy bottle in it, just to get started. I took 3 weekends to build the kit and run the engine, I crashed the first time I flew it, so I glued it all back together again with then new wonder glue 'Superglue' at about $3.00 a tube it was expensive, so we used C17 and C21 a fair bit too. I crashed the Cherokee every weekend, taking out the undercarrige somany times I lost count, destroyed the fin, chunked the leading edge, the engine Bearers were so fuel soaked the engine needed tightening after every flying weekend. Finally I decided to retire the old bird, it was about 12 months old. I built up a combat wing a really slow old thing that couldn't manouver but was as stable as a rock and after completing the thing I went into my first contest, 2.5cc combat, I had 2 cuts scored against me and I think I had 1 I made, my bestfriend was having engine trouble and I did more laps than him, somehow we got tangled on my second cut and his plane towed mine around the circle for a few minutes with my engine out, he couldn't shake me. so he went in and our pit crews worked to start our engines before time ran out. Mine just started, in the excitement I pulled up straight into a wing over, lost sight of my plane, tripped over his lines and his plane went straight in, mine was airborn for 1/2 a second longer as it went straight in out of the wing over, I won the contest with 2 cuts a piece and a 1/2 a second longer flight.
I now have about 8 R/C aeroplanes, 3 C/L scale models A tug boat, A Fox 35 powered boat and an assortment of kits, partially built and a stack of gliders and wings waiting for fuselages.
My current project is to build an indestructable R/C trainer in a 25-40 size, using coreflute, I have some ideas in mind particularly the 'Flying Flea' shape or even the 'Quickie' as these both have some great attributes to slow flight and the layout protects the prop and undercarrige.

Great story, have a look at my webshots page http://community.webshots.com/user/woodsyau at the SPAD SHORT Simple Hell On Rails Trainer 20 size and flys like a dream, knock one up for about $10 in a couple of hours. you can also add a flat wing with ailerons for an upgrade.

Yep Northern beaches Sydney. God's country :p
Is Galston Fagan park ??? I have been there twice last year for a picnic and flew as a visitor once my balsa speed 400 Viper. They could not beleive that a balsa heap could pull unlimited verticle to a spec !!! They would flip if I flew my Voodoo or Sunracer !!!!
The vid was taken at Wahroonga Jubilee park. That was the test flight by the way   !!! This is good venue for test flights as good landing approach.
Where you live ??

What setup are you using for your sp400 racer? I've built a few revisions of the Slipso400 but other than the motors slowly dying (6V sp400 on 2S pack) the speed is fairly limited to about 80~90km/hr from what I can guess.

Feb 07, 2006, 05:40 AM
Mega 16/15/3, 3S LiPo and 4.5x4.5 prop.
Or on 2S you could go for a motor with a KV of 4000 with a 4x4 or 5000+ with a 3x3.
It all comes down to airframe, watts and pitch speed, but your slipso is quite capable of being pretty quick

OK Cool. I am thinking to join Fagan Park this fin year as my club ban lipos. I tried to bring in a skill parameter (Gold wings) for lipo useage but got canned by the comittee.
Only prob is Fagan is quite a hike from Belrose and Roseville. Do you fly there often ??? FYI I just got a TRex first heli for xmas. Wat a learning curve
My Sunracer would pull 150 mph. A tad quicker than my balsa Viper. OK lots quicker :p :p

Yep as stuntman said I am using mega 16/15/3 with 3s 2100 TP Pro Lite and 4.7x4.7 prop in Viper. You will need ESC 25 amp plus.
Sunracer is Mega 16/15/2 3s2p TP 2100 pro lite 60 amp ESC.
First set up will do you fine and be impressive compared to your current set up !

Have been meaning to join that club, can't beat it for scenery.
Plus my folks live just down the road so I could kill two birds with one stone and maybe kill two planes as well with my luck :(
But seriously if I had to join a club it would be Fagan Park ...I'd probably be there now if I didn't meet a flying partner at the local park.
He likes to listen to the Top Gun soundtrack while hes flying his F18 ....oops did I give it away :D :D :D

I try to fly there every second sunday but it hasn't worked out that way for a couple of months now. Windy weather, Xmas and other commitments got in the way.
I have managed to fly the occasional saturday and i got some stick time on Australia day. I kind of enjoy the field to myself on those days but i do miss the banter and chatting with the other flyers whilst waiting for batteries to charge etc.
I can help out with the Trex if you have problems.

I like Fagan park venue and yes scenery. But it is a hike. I will probably join there this coming fin year as I need the insurance. This may incent me to go there more than once a year !!!! There is a great park next to it for the family and a picnic !!! Would be Damn hot in summer I would suspect.

Last weekend we went and test flew the new Fatboy War Birds at our local slope in Esperance West Australia and what a hoot. A mate ordered 2 of these (a yellow and a red) and I finally finished mine and we had 3 hours of combat in 16 knot winds and laughed ourselves silly knocking each other out of the sky. They are really strong and just bounce being built out of EPP foam and taped. I would highly recomend them to anyone. No high teck radio gear, just 2 channel radio and 3 standard servos fit nicely. The roll rate is about 2 rolls per second and the energy retension in the zoom is quite good for such a small slope flyier.(1100mm wing span) The close in and personal attack flying is just great fun and I would recomend these birds to everyone the web adress is as follows and the delivery was really fast. a great product all round. http://www.bitss.com.au/fatboy/Products.htm
