Hi All

I have been using a bicycle speedo (cheap £5 from Halfords) as a techo on my helicopter to mointor the head speed, I found out how to do this from various forums.

I have the display mounted on the taill of the heli and I have to hover close to see it, so I was thinking of using large 7 digit red LED displays to show the rpm reading.

Being simple minded and all I thought it would be a matter of getting where the wires go to the LCD display and wire over to each LED segment (via driver) but when I opened the speedo I found about 20 tracks going down to the display and the display was not even physically wired, just seem the touch some foam part. AND to top it all off there doesnt seem to be enough tracks for all the segments and data on the LCD display????

Whats going on, is it possilbe to do what I want?

Not trivial, because the driver IC for the LCD will not be able to drive the LED displays either.

Why not just buy a regular Tachometer from www.towerhobbies.com

I just modify the Tachometer, by adding a toggle Switch and external connector, so that I can attached an external Photo sensor.

The Tachometer is attached on the Body and the Photo sensor is place and the middle section of the boom.

Don't take that LCD off of it's cable connection . You'll never achive it's original state once trying to reconnect.

Hi
I had one of these, the range I got from it was only about 6foot which is less than I can see.
I wonder if the signal could be boosted?

It's not a simple wiring job, sadly.
The "foam" you mention connects the LCD to the electronics, it's actually a big sandwich of lots of connections. The foam doesn't need to be aligned, but the rest of it does.
LCD signal is AC and _extremely_ low power. To get to LED you need an amplifier if you're lucky... if unlucky you will need to change the multiplexing too.
A project for the adventurous only, and not worth it.
Experiment with changing the polarising screen (swapping it round etc) though, you might get more contrast out of it.

What you need is a cheap $3 toy telescope, not an LED display.

It will be about 4 orders of magnitude less complicated.
