Well, I'm brand spanking new at this - haven't even bought myself a vehicle yet. I'm mostly interested in cars and I'm leaning towards the off-road nitro - although on-road has some appeal for me too - especially as I have about a quarter mile of fresh paved, closed fire road right outside my door.

I'm in Vancouver Canada and would be very interested in hearing from any other enthuthiasts in the the area. I recently had to take an extended medical leave of absence from my job so I have tons of free time to invest at this point in my life.

So - if there are any vancouverites out there please get in touch. Maybe we can get together and race (or maybe you could even pawn off one of your used vehicles on me - who knows?)

can be reached @ cadalfaus@shaw.ca

Come on you guys, a little snow isn't going to stop us. Just maidened my Chrysalis on the weekend, -15C, just managed 45 minutes on the battery though, that kind of sucks. Bring it on, I fly year round.

Too cold for me right now.

Since my activities are indoor now, I've spent a few weeks working on the interior of my Porterfield. Wood dash with details, seats with seatbelts, control handles, pilot, etc. This photo doesn't show much but it looks good in person.

Maybe if it's nice on Jan 1, we'll have a quick and cool New Year's funfly.

Hi from Ottawa. It was dead calm this afternoon but -12C. I would have loved to be flying but my hands would have been numb in seconds. How do you hardy types keep warm?

I'm stuck inside putting ailerons on my Superstar EP and building the Great Planes Easy Sport kit which I intend to convert to electric.

cheers, Fred

Gloves;)

I use the ones that flip back and velcro. They wook good, not as bulky as other gloves.

Well here on Vancouver Island there is still some outdoor electric flying going on. In Duncan there are a few guys flying float Planes off the lake. Used to be mostly gas but I hear since lipoly more guys are converting to electric. I'm hoping to get out at some point to do some flying with Rick (another ezone member) but rain, fog and work keep getting in the way.

I'm with you Tom, I fly year round.

Had 2 great flights today. One this morning at -20C and this aft. at -7C... I use a pair of deerskin gloves... Very thin and warm, but about as thin as I'd go for this type of weather. Unfortunately, at 20 below, servos really do get sluggish (HS55s), and an exposed LiPo doesn't give much punch for long (Profile 3D)... Just too chilly. Time for full fuse planes...

Good to see a Canadian/Multinational gathering on RCGroups...

Joel,
I find many more Canadian flyers in Eastern Canada than around here. (online so far anyway...) They tend to fly the "bigger more expensive" stuff near my area, and most belong to clubs etc... So some of the guys I've met kinda turn their nose up at me when the find out that all I fly is electric. Regarding wind... You have some large hills nearby, don't you? You can do some slope gliding.

The deerskin gloves I have are made by Kombi. If you find a dealer nearby, I can give you a style #, and you can check them out. They're really soft though, so try not to get them near anything sharp. (And this includes 'thumb' flyers, the tops of the sticks are pretty abrasive.)

Corey,
Nope flat as a BOARD we have praries. it goes like this little diagram: its a cross section of AB,BC border being in the mountains. oh and i am a thumb flyer. not for long though! im going to re-teach myself supposedly im supposed to do it while im still young so im going to give fingers a try.

i am here

from where i am its a good way to the mountains and no large hills. its kinda weird it really has some smaller hills but no major ones for slope. no big loss though im more into powered aircraft!

if you are looking for good deerskin gloves you can usually get them from a hutterite colony! most of them are decent quality.

Thin leather gloves are in the gardening section of the hardware stores. Some of the ladies gloves are more flexible.

I'm a transplanted Canadian living in Colorado at the moment. I grew up in Murray River PE.

I'm hooked on the slope thing, but fly most everything else from electrics to glow helis.

You can find me in the slope forum most of the time.

Hi guys: Canadian in Dubai, United Arab Emirates here. I'm into rc motorcycles, mainly nitro powered and the 1/5 scale FG gasoline cars.

Kinda doing a reverse weather thing here .... it's just too stinking hot and humid (yes the desert is humid around here) in the Summer ..... 30 minutes out there with the toys early in the morning is about all I can ever stand. Anyway, now through April is just perfect.

When I'm home in Toronto it's the nitro snowmobile that provides the winter fun :)

Planes .... haven't had any luck with them ...... I can't keep em out of the trees!

One good thing about CO. No trees and lots of hills. Now if we could get rid of those nasty plane eating rocks and rattle snakes.

Hello from Gibsons BC (anyone remember the Beachcombers?). LOTS of trees and hills almost no large open areas. Parkflying only where I am. Tons of fun flying my GWS Beaver whilst a full scale one rattles by. :D

Well just got back from the field. Great day for flying! Sunshine in the morning, warm temps. Got to try out my new radar gun I received for Christmas. My GWS ME 109 (2025-5300 Himaxx) was clocked at an average of 55 mph on a level flyby, and the best speed of 67 mph out of a medium dive. Not too shabby, I thought!
Didn't get the Pitts finished up to maiden.....next week I guess.

Christmas Eve Day was great over here too. <5km wind, and warm enough for only a sweater. I flew about 5 full packs out right in front of my parents house in the 'burbs. The kids loved it, and the parents thanked me for tiring them out.

Didn't get what I had asked for in the aircraft dept. But I did receive a digital camera, so no complaints here!

Jagzilla,

I was clocked at 124kph level with a Himax 2015-5400... (GWS Me-109) You can gear that sucker for less thrust and more speed if that's what you're after. Especially with that 2025-5300!!! I'm sure you could blow me out of the water! I had to go quite a bit below my 1:1 T. to W. to get that fast, but it's surely doable. Give-'er! What's your AUW?

Corey

Dec 29, 2005, 11:16 PM
Auw is a bit over 19 oz's Gearing is 4.4-1. Battery is TP 2100 Prolite 3 cell. Can't remember at the moment what the prop is, but I think it might be a 1090 APC. I'll have to check. I know the batts were cold when I clocked it this morning, so perhaps it might do a little quicker on a fresh charge. Honestly though, I doubt it would go much quicker. The air must be condusive to faster airplanes in your part of the country.

Jag,

Could be a weight thing too. In the 'high speed' config. I was forced to do a ROG takeoff. It just wasn't enough even with an all out javelin throw! And I have retracts... I've removed all the GWS panel lines in mine too, so ~23oz, plus the drag must be much lower on mine. Make sure you have a spinner on there too. I'm pretty sure that it'll get you 10km more if you don't have it on there. The 124kph is an average of opposite directions also...

10km is a pretty decent gain...
