Hi, Does it matter if you use a radio made for an air plane in a boat? I'm making a model boat to tool around at the pond, and I noticed radios for planes are easier to come by, and it looks like most of the car (ground ) radios are of the two channel pistol grip type. Thanks for your input, Tim

Some Futaba aircraft radios can be ordered on ground frequencies. I think they charge an extra $10 to $20 for the change. When you order your radio and they ask for the channel number give them a ground channel.

Thunder Tiger ie coming out with an updated version of the Ace Nautical Commander (http://www.acehobby.com/ace/ACE8701.htm). The new version will be 7 channels; the old version (http://www.rc-submarines.com/id61.htm) was available with 5 (upgradable to 7) or 7 channels.
For the new people, the Nautical Commander is a boat only radio with three sticks on the front. Two sticks on the keft side move up & down for throttles or sail. A single stick on the right moves left & right fot the rudder. The new version is slightly larger than the older model.

you can get various multi-channel aircraft based sets that are set up on LEGAL SURFACE FREQUENCIES from hobby stores anywhere, just be sure to get the surface waveband not the aircraft waveband.
the Futaba skysport and 6EXA come in both surface and aircraft frequencies and are bloody good sets

Bob - Love ya man! Your heads up about the new version of the NautCom made my day! Do your inner sources have a ballpark on the cost and availability? What will be the distribution channel(s)?
Thanks again!

Ace/Thunder Tiger will be distributing the radio thru their normal channels - you'll be able to purchase or special order it from your LHS. I don't have a line on the price yet, but my WAG is $200 - $250 - based on similar 7 channel systems. The Nautical Commander (http://www.acehobby.com/ace/ACE8701.htm) link has a "Find a Dealer" search feature. Jim, the Hobbytown USA in Austin should be able to order it for you. The promo flyer I saw at work had the part number as TTR8701, the Ace site has it as ACE8701.
