Radio ?

[Three D]

Hi all
I'm new to this sport and have a quick question regarding the radio
that I bought used.
It is a Futaba 3 PM TFS radio. The manual shows a "crystal cover", I
have an open hole.
I am wondering if the guy I got it from kept the cover / crystal.
I have to get the batteries in it when I get home to see if it
transmits.
He also seems to have kept the truck side battery holder. (Ill have to
track one down before I can even check to see if I have communication
between the radio and receiver)

Does anybody have one of these radios to confirm that I am missing my
cover / crystal?

Usually the crystal clips into a little plastic cover, that then fits into
the hole. I assume in the hole are 2 smaller, metallic looking holes?
Looks like you need a pair of crystals. No big worry, they're not
expensive. Make sure you get the right Mhz for the radio gear though, (i.e.
in the UK we have 40mhz and 27mhz, AM and FM) it'll say on the tranny or the
receiver somewhere which is it.

According to the manual on the Futaba web site the T3PM-FS as they call it
is a synthesize tuned radio, requires no crystals and the manual that I'm
lookin at only shows the one transmitter for the 3 models they list, the one
with the crystal hole in the back.

Your receiver unit should have 2 round dials on it for selecting the desired
frequency (FREQ SETTING). If it has a crystal hole in the top right or
bottom left then it is not a synthesize tuned version and requires crystals.

I think another way of telling is when you turn the transmitter on, it
should display the channel the radio is currently tuned to and mode up the
top (PP or HRS) for a second or so. If it just shows M0 (for the model
name) and 1-10 (model number) when you first turn it on then it sounds like
its not the FS model.

As for the battery pack for the receiver unit if you are going to use the
radio in a electric vehicle with a electronic speed controller then you dont
need the battery pack and if your going to use it in a nitro powered truck
or car then I would suggest you buy a prebuilt 2/3A 5 cell receiver pack or
similar to suit the vehicle. If the unit didnt come with servo's then it
doesnt come with a switch and battery pack either. Have a look under
"Miscellaneous" in the manual.

You are correct. I got a chance to look it over a little closer and
found that to be the case. I pulled the battery pack out of one of my
old airplanes and charged it, hooked it up last night and got the
servos to actuate. Tonight I will try to fire it up. Im excited to take
it for a quick spin. Its a little cool here in Fargo so a quick spin is
all I will do tonight. Ill bring it in to my shop this weekend and run
it a bit. According to the guy I got it from it is hardly broke in.
(and it looks like brand new).
It is a Truckzilla conversion so it should be fun to tune. If you have
any tips and pointers I would love to hear them.
