I blew the dust off my Speed 400 Super Cub project this morning. I began work on it 24 Jan 09, but since then, I've built and maidened four other planes. I need to get this one finished this year... but it seems there is too little time.
That is a cool paint job, Tram.

I'm building the "Whisper' and the designer mentioned using light glass cloth (0.5 oz) and spar varnish.
Anyone used this combination?

Thanks for the link. Did you ever finish the Polish Mig? I don't remember hearing a flight report.
EDIT:
Just read through the info in that link.....That sounds good. I will follow it pretty closely. Did you use the sanding sealer on the mig prior to glassing?
Edit Again: I see that you did use the sanding sealer. My worries on the Whisper though are that when I'm ready to do the glassing, my aileron(s) and elevator(s) will already be hinged in place since they are built into the wing and tail during construction. Do I just stop the glass just before getting to those movable parts? That's really the only option that I see. Just put coats of lacquer on the movable parts but without glass cloth.

I actually didn't glass the Mig.. but I did use the sanding sealer.

I'd just make a live hinge, like the pylon birds, etc do.. Man, I really need to repair my FVK Bandit.

That is mig-a-licious!
Here is my progress on the whisper (growler). I started on it yesterday afternoon. I still have about a meelion hours of sanding/shaping left to do but I have the basic wing shaped out.
What is a "live hinge"? like the pylon guys use?
Tram
Oct 13, 2009, 09:11 PM
Wow dude.. you got down on that FAST!! I guess I need to order up some plans for it!
See if this helps for live hinge: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/search.php?searchid=21526352
cmala
Oct 13, 2009, 10:01 PM
Ok I still don't get it. I put in some kind of flexible material under the glass cloth like peel ply from composite manufacture(which I could get from work)
I see how the aileron would be able to move up but not down unless I dig out a bunch of wood on the bottom side. Also, since I'm using a single servo inside the fuse, I'm using torque rods. Can you do a top hinge with torque rods?
Tram
Oct 13, 2009, 10:17 PM
Hmm.... Good questions..
Can you cut the ailerons out and glass them seperately?
cmala
Oct 13, 2009, 10:40 PM
Yes but they need to be installed when I glass the wing so I can glass over the torque rod installation

Hey, they make that Deft sanding sealer and lacquer in spray cans too. Does the stuff smell bad? If I have to go outside it may be easier to spray it on instead of messing with a brushie brush
Spackles94
Oct 14, 2009, 11:23 AM
I've sealed with Deft before (Stevens Aeromodel recommends it). It obviously is not as thick or smooth as brushing it on, but it's pretty good. It does stink up the place a bit, though (it's lacquer-based, after all).
Will you be covering over it?

I've used both the brush and the spray.. Yeh, it smells horrible.. It's a good brain shrinker for sure..
You'll want to put on several coats of the stuff.. I'd probably paint between one of the last set of coats.. It'll keep your paint pretty.. :)
Spackles94
Oct 14, 2009, 01:05 PM
That's where a good mask comes into play. :)
Some light sanding in between coats would help, too. That stuff will make the hairs on the balsa stand up a little bit. :)

I will be painting over it.
Shoot 1-2 light coats of DEFT then knock the grain down with some 600 grit. Follow up with color using a lacquer based spray paint. Top-coat over the paint with 1-2 more coats of DEFT to keep it from scratching off. That should do it.
Check into the Design Master Color Tool product (usually stocked at Michaels or Hobby Lobby craft stores) They coat very well and dry quick... best of all they are very light.

Hey Todd-
I'd be tempted to go with the 16/15/5 recommended for the plane.. The Mega's are awesome motors, worth the money and they can be had for a reasonable amount..
The 16/15/5 is an 1800kv motor. On something like a 6x4 prop you're looking at 150watts and about <20Amps..
I don't think the wing on the MiG is going to allow you to do "slow" real well.. Of course it will slow down fine and I'm sure it will fly well in slow flight, but it's not going to be a floater, is I guess what I'm trying to say..
*edit*
I'm not sure what prop I'd run on that, you'd want much more than a 6x4, I was just using those #'s.. Might want to contact.. umm.. let me see if I can find him.. The guy who designed it is a regular here on RCG..

Tram thanks for your thoughts!
I'm thinking I'm going to change the planform a bit to increase the wing's area. I've also been looking at a couple ways to reduce the build's weight. Maybe I can save 3-4oz and lower the overall wingloading. And with the lower weight of a 1320mah vs a 2200mah battery, I should be able to reduce the weight sufficiently to allow the plane to fly slower.

Funder flew till it died, Chipmunk flew a lot and was sold, Hydro never flew or floated and was sold.. GeeBee flew and flew and flew.. Still have it.. Bottom of the pic shows a Sig Wonder wing..
