Here is Todd in deep concentration. This is his new bird, Netz, or should I say his "free bird". (Forgive me. I've got my MP3 player running, and its playing Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird right now.) Its a fast plane with a single fin rather then the two wing tip fins. Its patterned after the Halfpipe.
Designers of the Halfpipe are same guys that sell the Moth.

To give a little details on yesterday's combat...
It started with Andy and me flying formation and wound up bumping. That started it all. From then on we would just fly along with each other and check up as much as we could. Dave joined in the fun and snagged me and Andy a couple times. What was cool is some collisions sent one of the planes into a tight spin for a few seconds. I couldn't get enough of it!!!! My last combat session yesterday ended when I decided to "pick" at Dave a little too close to the slope ledge and my plane went into a spin and I almost recovered. Notice I said ALMOST. :) I pulled up to try to miss the ledge but was short by about a foot. The impact was fairly hard and the damage was minimal, but it ended my flying session. The nose broke off (no big deal), but the right servo gear stripped (only $3 from Rick's). The sun was setting anyway so I decided to watch for a few minutes.
Dave wouldn't have that... he handed me the transmitter to his half pipe which was in the air flying. I flew that one around while he flew his JW. Andy was still in the air with his Stryker.
I don't think I've had as much fun in a one hour flying session in a looooong time! Thanks Dave for the advice and for the stick time!!! :D

The Weasel flew pretty decent. Dave said it flew good, but might benefit from a little more nose weight. I wasn't as comfortable with it as I was my Stryker. I only flew it for probably 10-15 minutes. I'll give it another chance ;)

Andy,
My bet is that your weasel will become your best combat plane in the medium weight range. It more durable then the Stryker, and that the basis of my prediction. Plus its very aerobatic too.

No modules. You know you've hit your opponent when you actually hit him. Yup, bump, and spin, smack, and roll. Sometimes a foamy will crash. Cover your foam wings in packing tape and they a bullet proof.

That looks like a great place to slope Don!
We just got back from the slope here. Our crew (Andy, Brian, Matt, and me) met up with Dave, Todd, Todd's daughter, and Jim on the rim of the bowl. Winds were very strong but quite irregular. Our lighter strykers were getting kicked around pretty good. We managed to get some combat going anyways. I think Andy was the victor of the day. He did some dirty deeds with his Weasel Pro. He tied up with a good collision with Dave's JW60 and sent Dave on the walk of shame. (more like the climb of shame) :D
After that I told Dave I would get him back. I got in formation to attack with Andy and he came up under me and the planes stuck together. I was still in control of the flight and flew it level for another 20 seconds or more while it slowly descended. I couldn't find enough lift quick enough to keep them off the rocks. I steered it in to the tier below us for a nice landing. That was the "play of the day" I think! I think Matt got it on video. If so, I will upload it for ya'll to see.

Yeah, we had great fun on the slope today! Like Gary said, the wind wasn't as consistent as we would have liked. The North slope is MUCH nicer for smooth and steady lift. The combat was pretty fun. I had my Stryker ballasted up with about 8 ounces of tire weights to bring the total weight to about 18 ounces. This made for some very exciting fast fly-bys! I also think it helped having more mass when Gary and I were knocking each other around. Mine didn't get spun out like his did.
As Gary mentioned above, I managed to take out Dave's JW60 with my Weasel Pro. It was the result of a carefully calculated, tactical approach that sent Dave spiraling to the rocky face below...at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :p What was funny though was the way my Weasel went in to the fastest flat spin you ever saw. Looked like somebody threw it like a frisbee! It didn't loose much altitude while doing probably 20 spins or so before I recovered. Just for reference, my plane weighs about 11 ounces and has a 35" wingspan. Dave's JW weighs 3 times as much and has a 60" wingspan. I think he was diving down as I was doing a crossing pass and we just happened to tangle. All I have to show for it is a nice red scuff mark on the leading edge of my right wing. Lots of hooting and hollering ensued. :D
Oh, forgot to mention the last flight where my Weasel got stuck under Gary's Stryker. Strangest thing you ever saw! Both of us were trying to give up or down to separate, but I'm guessing that the low pressure area under Gary's wing sucked my Weasel up like a magnet. We couldn't get them apart. We were all laughing so hard. Couldn't believe both escaped unscathed! Gary says he was getting me back for taking Dave down...not sure if I buy that!
Can't wait to go again!

Sounds like you all had a great day on the hill. Wish I was there.
The planes do tend to stick together when the air between is gone and they make there own vacuum.
Had that happen quite a few times and I'm shure many more.
Just remember if it gets real tuff and you can't get the other guys plane
knocking his radio out of his hands is still a kill, well a dirty kill :D
I only did that after someone got behind me and I caught his plane with my backside.
Slope is so much fun as you know now. Always exciting, always fun, always different and best to me is it is always working with what mother nature is serving up that day.
Cheers,

Those are great pictures. It was so embarrassing that my big JW60 crashed and burned by a Weasel Pro. That just goes to show how much fun this sloping is, and just about anything can fly in the lift we are getting. I think Andy really enjoyed his weasel pro more on this day then his previous outing. Its a great plane for beginner to advanced slopers. It is bullet proof.

Hey,
Thought you all might be interested in this....
I was checking out some of the "Moth Tunning" posts and I came across a great idea for trimming slopers on the fly. the idea is to utilize your Throttle stick in adjusting 5% up or down elevon control. Below is the info that was posted. I'm going to try it on mine....
"All you need is one of the programmable mixes. Mix throttle input to elevator channel at a very low percentage, like 5%.
Generally folks do forward stick for fast down elevator trim, and back for slow up elevator trim."
and then a bit more infor I got was....
"Yes, it's all done in the radio. Glancing at the manual for your
Tx, it looks relatively straight forward.
Use Programmable mix 1, set to ON always (not on a switch),
master ch throttle, slave ch elevator, and then set the percentage mix
very low. If the controls move in the wrong direction, then reverse
the mix percentage (if it was mixed at 5%, change it to -5%).
When you fly it, put the throttle stick in whatever will be, for instance,
your fast trim position, and then use the normal elevator trim
to make the glider go fast and arrow straight in a dive. When you pull
back on the throttle stick it should slow to cruise or thermal trim.
Adjust the mix percentage as appropriate, but generally you shouldn't
need more than 5-9% total mix."

The temp was 63 degrees and the winds were a fairly constant 15+ mph out of the SW with a few gusts, and I could wait no longer, so the Moth lost her virginity, well sort of....
I took her over to the Oakwood College field and went atop the big hill on the East side of Wynn Dr. Faced the SW twoard the cemetery in the distance, felt the wind in my face and the "Elvis" in my legs, and threw her out there....
The flights were very very short. She'd leap out of my hand up 20-30 feet or more. To keep her from kiting away, I'd give her down stick, and she dropped fast. As she got within 10 feet or less of the ground, I'd be giving her full back stick to keep her from crashing out at the bottom. I did this several times. I tried switching to higher elevator rates, but that didn't change much of her flight behavior.
Luckily no damage was done, and after 10 or so tosses, I decided I had "danced with the devil" enough for the day.
I'm not sure what I learned. Except that the grass lawn of Oakwood is more forgiving than the rocks of the quarry, and maybe that small hills and 15+ winds aren't enough to keep her aloft???
I was hoping to confirm her CG is right, but I guess that may have to wait for a no wind day of "catch" with Dave to confirm this. Hopefully, he'll forgive me for flying it without him. Perhaps I'll go home and tape pennies under her wings and exacto blades to my balance stand and re-measure her CG.
QUESTION: How much "reflex" (up elevavon as measured from flat with the bottom of the wing) should my Moth have? 1/16", 1/8", 3/16" ???

Todd,
You are forgiven for flying without me. This time:)
NOTE to others reading this post: Please call Todd and take him to the quarry TODAY!!!
Back to Todd:
How did the CG re-measurements read? Sounds like your CG is still a tad too far back. Try adding a nugget of lead to the nose with tape and repeat the soft tosses. Reduce your reflexes because, in your words, you indicate it "jumped" right out of your hand. The Moth likes to fly fast. Your tosses should be straight forward and it should only rise a little bit. Rising too much will bleed off the air speed. Good job on the flight tests, and I'm sure it will improve with just some minor adjustments. Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Hey sloper friends,
Today the winds are perfect for the PowerLineCut in SE Huntsville. But, Drat, I can't go.
The winds are just too nice to waste. Somebody needs to go and take advantage of this opportunity.
Yesterday at the Quarry, we had a fine time. We started late, so it was a short session. Just 2 hours of flying. Don, Todd and myself were there with our combat wings. Then Mr Bissett and his flying buddy arrived with a cool little pusher. The motor was removed.
So we had 6 flyers total.

Somehow I'm sure you'd still "rip my bring" on the slopes

Sloping today was cold, but a lot off fun! Dave even got in a few rounds of DSing with his JW  Way to go Dave! You rock!
Some video was taken, but most of the time we spent trying to knock each other out of the sky, so no one was holding a camera.
"The Butcher" got a bite taken out of his JW's wing by Larry's Mother Ship. The Mother Ship is a flying battleship that most bites bounce off of, but even she went down hard once. And Larry had a solid Raider on Raider contact with me - put me in a flat spin I must have done 1440 degrees worth of spinning.
My MiniWeasel also got maidened, but will need some repair work after I put her nose in to the rocks practicing my inverted flying skills for Andy. Andy didn't make it. He must have been too busy sloping his garage again :D
Don did a little "bumping, sniffing, and kissing" here and there with all of us and managed to evade most of our attempts to take him down. But we all got to make the trip down the face more than once. Don also taught us about "The Flat Spin" button on our TXs. Go fly with Don, and I'm sure he'd be willing to point out this little known TX feature ;)
Looking forward to more of you all joining us!
Andy, come out from hiding :p

I had to go to Tuscaloosa with Lara, but I took my Weasel. Found me a decent slope too! Check it out...
btw, Dave and I had a real fun time yesterday evening at the quarry. Wish Todd would have been there to swing that toy hammer!

Andy,
I'm hoping that you will post the googleearth location for this slope. I had fun Friday too, but I tell ya, Saturday the conditions were tons better. You would have had fun. We talked about ya just a little, but it was all in good spirts, and mostly just wishing you could have joined us.

Good summary by Todd and Don.
Todd mentioned some video, so I edited a special version for him as he is my wingman, and the Hammer.
Completely overlooked, in the writeups so far, is that Don maidened his MiniPinky. Yup, while I've been cutting foam and posting articles this week, Don has cut and finished a sloper. Don has secretly cut his own version of the MiniWeasel, which can only be dubbed the MiniPINKY. He maidened it's first flight yesterday. It took several launches and CG adjustments before he finally got it dialed in. By the end of the day, he shows us his skills with the rolling circle on an airplane to small to see and rolling to fast to count. I had to slow it down to really appreciate the fun.

Otherwise, I tried to add some interesting effects for your entertainment.

Too funny, Dave! Nice job on the video...don't worry, the Hammer's time will come and Dave's camera had better be rolling. The way this duel is shaping up, I can see the feature-length video already...Dave will no doubt have more fun editing that one that he will watching the live action. This will definitely be one video NOT to miss. Now for the date...

As long as you have the JW hooked to your receiver.... that battle "might" be even. :D

I appreciate your kind comments. I couldn't do it without great actors and slope pilots. We've got a good team, and we have a lot of fun too.

I can only speak for the one that I've battled with (and lost to). It really packs a punch with it's size.

While browsing the videos I found this speed demon. The turn that he uses is very interesting. I"ve got to try it.

OK... I watched this video of yours Dave... It's OK I guess, but I've seen better.... much better. That looked kinda skewed and all with *que echo announcer voice* "The HAMMER".
When I think about "The HAMMER", I have to think of two situations...
#1 A skilled carpenter pounding 8 penny nails in with single, accurate strokes.
#2 A weekend warrior whacking the heck out of his thumb while trying to work off the tasks on his honey do list.
For some reason #2 is coming to mind when I watch that video. :D
