And somebody needed to start a let's go flying thread, so.....
Launch Code shows Wednesday morning should be cool, but flyable. I'm itching to fly my Mini-Wing. Anyone else want to Fly at the NGC Field or perhaps at the Discovery Drive Field (so Frank can fly his Mini-Max-Didle-Bug).

The winds pick up as the morninf goes on, so I'm going to be there at 7. BTW, Frabk said he wasn't going to bring his Didle-Bug, so no need to go to Discovery. Let's all plan to meet at the standard NGC site at 7am this Wednesday.

Last night while testing out all the electronics on my Mini-Wing, it fried :censored: In less than 20 seconds $75 worth of electronics went up in smoke :(
I had a Blue Bird BMR-04 Rx, two Blue Bird BMS 303 servos, and a GWS ICS50Li ESC, connected to a 7.4volt LiPo battery and a IPS 50 motor. It looks like the motor and battery are still good, but smoke came out of the other three.
I turned it on at 0 throttle and checked the elevons. They worked. I increased the throttle to 1/2 and everything was doing fine, so I gave it full throttle and the motor came up to full speed and then shut down. Then smoke came out of the ESC, then out of the RX and then out of each servo :(
I'll be heading over to Rick's later to see what he has to say - He spec'd out the parts....

OK guys, let's try to understand something here...
If we're gonna have our own forum with different threads in it, lets keep the posts in those threads relevant to the thread title. I know I'm breaking that rule here myself with this post, but it had to be said. If we're gonna have a thread about "Let's Go Flying..." (which I assume would be to coordinate flying times/places), let's not post general RC plane discussions in that that thread.
When Gary and I first started talking about getting our own forum, we wanted to pattern ours after the Atlanta Area Electric Flyers. They have a few threads that they use regularly. If there is a new topic, people post a new thread and it is alive until it falls off the list.
We'd like to see a couple of threads in our forum used that way. We've kinda started that way, but we need to keep it more on topic. Let's not gob up our threads so that they are full of (soon-to-be) irrelevant posts.
I hope you guys understand what our intent was in this whole process. Let's keep this forum as useful as possible. :D

It was a fun morning. The photo of Jason captures the grin of a successful pilot.
Jim and I drove up to the north end of the field to check it out. There is a jeep trail leading to the lake and there are a few trees around. We could park out near the lake and fly from there. There is plenty of room to the south of the trees and some close-in flying could be done on the north side of the trail. The trail is fairly smooth and could be used for ROG and landings but the two tracks aren't very wide.
Anyway, that might be an alternative when the inevitable happens to the Northrup Patch.

I had a great time too, and was thrilled to meet so many of the local flying gang at one time. Amazing to see a Challenger, 3 SSs, and two Slingers in the air at once or very nearly at once. Doubt I got everyone straight, however.
When I ran into several of you at R/C Hobbies, I was only able to remember 1 name out of 3, but I at least recognized 3 there. Looking forward to their Grand Opening the first weekend in December, and whatever deals they offer.
About that alternate site, I don't have a pickup, but if someone has a pickup and a mower, it would be pretty easy to haul a mower in and mow a reasonable area near the jeep trail for takeoffs and landings. Since that is pretty remote, I personally doubt anyone would mind. I would imagine that mowing a small area just a few times a year would do it.

Nov 24, 2005, 01:23 PM
Launch Code suggests the next good low-wind flying opportunity at NG will be Friday starting some time around noon, possibly best 3-ish, if you can read it that close with the 3-hour forecast blocks. Cool and clear. No rain!
Someone of you more expert in these things and more knowledgeable in the ways of the local flyers than I am may be able to suggest a good gathering time.
Since I won't be Black Thursday shopping, I'm available in that general time frame, expecially if I know some others are likely to be there.
I have one Commander II left, 2 spare wings, and 3 batteries, not to mention a field-charger, so my son Scott and I could potentially fly quite a while. Or if things went like the first flight Wednesday, we could have a very short flying afternoon.

I talked to Ken Fidler this afternoon and found out that after we flew at NG Wednesday, they not only put up mud fencing, but they also did some digging that then filled up with water and effectively made a moat in the road on the way to the gravel parking area. He went there to fly this AM, but turned around and ended up at Horizon Elementary back in Madsion.
I thought the latest word ought to get out ASAP so we don't (1) all schedule to meet somewhere, (2) go somewhere else, and (3) have the latecomers be lost/left out.
Looks like it's time to get our Plan B decided and in action.

I just learned that atjurhs Todd is going about 9 AM to the Oakwood college field at the T intersection of Wynn Drive and Oakwood Rd. He says the fields there are huge! and have no obstacles and there is a place for parking on the East side of Wynn Drive, but many folks drive out on and park on the grass field. I've never been there, so this will be a first for me. Grass instead of gravel, tall weeds and mud. What a concept!
Launch code says 5 at 9 AM going to 3 at noon to 2 at 3 PM and then 3 at 6 PM.
So my plan is to be there however long I end up being there, perhaps breaking for lunch if several flyers end up coming. But I've heard nothing here or from anyone else. So today may be a good day at the sales!

Besides me, who's in?
I'm going to maiden my MiniWing for the 2nd time, gheeee, I think I've said that before :p
I guess this is also a good of place to start talking about a new flying location. If the NGC field is now under construction then we are going to have to find a new flying spot. And the possibilites are:
- Moquin Drive - traffic going to the school
- Quality Drive - chased out by the Rent-a-Cops
- West Park Loop - diverted traffic from construction on Hwy 72
(but I think we could give it another try)
- UAH
- the field just West of NGC and between Explorer and Old Madison Pike
- Others.....

Nov 28, 2005, 06:27 PM
A minor correction, the Quality Drive site is available. It is the parking lot of the Cinram building which is no longer available.
We might want to try the north end of the NG field. It isn't as convenient as the south end. Also, the NG site may be OK. I haven't checked it lately.
I'm in.

I'll try to make it also. Perhaps I can show how the Mini Diddle MAX is supposed to fly. The Friday afternoon damage has been repaired and the second surgical correction of the angle of incidence completed. (I don't advise a split-S maneuver from five feet.) Hopefully it will do better. The larger motor helps a bunch. Thanks for the suggestion, Don.

Tailskid,
Nice to hear from you. I lived in New Mexico for several years and enjoyed reminding friends and family in the east about that wonderful weather out there.
Our flying gang is not affiliated with any local clubs and is not organized in any way beyond this forum. We have a great time in spite of the fact that we are in constant search of a good place to fly. I guess that is the beauty of e-flite, it can be done mostly anywhere and at any time.
Several of us have attended the RCRC Big Birds and Warbirds events but they unfortunately cancelled them this year. It would be nice to see an electric event at that lovely facility. The Tullahoma, TN club had a big electric fly-in a few months ago which was great fun.
Do you fly electrics at a club field?

Gary,
I haven't checked the NG field recently. Don't you work right across the street from it? Maybe you could recon and let us know tomorrow. I still like the Quality Drive site too but am happy to fly wherever the gang would like. The biggest disadvantage of QD on a clear morning is that the sun is in your face over the cotton field. As Andy pointed out we probably need to stay south of the Cinram tree line to avoid any complaints. I prefer it in the evenings but fly mornings there sometimes.

All,
Todd and I were discussing the flying field issue, and I mentioned that UAH has a field that is flyable for electrics. This is the field on the SE corner. My club, the NASF, flew exclusively on that field for many years. They recently started to build on the land which caused us to move, but I noticed that they stopped building. The land is currently grass covered with a rather large dirt pile in the middle. It would be perfect for eflights.
Who works by UAH, and is wants to go on a recon? They also have a pond for water flights.

Clever!
I drove over to UAH at lunch to look for the site described there. Think I found it way over east and south of what looks like a power plant. I saw several sizeable dirt piles, but also a lot of construction dozers, tractors, workers, concrete boxes, culverts, etc. etc. If they started construction earlier and abandoned it for a while, it sure looks like they're back now. That looks like it would have been a wonderful site at one time. Too bad!
Anyway, looking forward to a decision when and where for Wednesday AM or whenever.

Well more than one of us has driven by UAH and the NG field.
I say let's meet at the NG field.
The NG field is dry and solid (no puddles to speak of). Although there is a little 3' fence it won't get in the way of most flyers. As others have noted the UAH field has construction equipment and concrete pipe laying all over it, so it is not really very useable.

Went and flew during lunch today over at MDA with some fellow Adtran people. The conditions were very nice. Of course no one remembered to bring a camera. Got to see Fred's new Firebird Freedom fly (and it actually stayed in the air this time). It seemed considerably more maneuverable than an ABC but also less forgiving. It is perfect for dog-fighting.
The NG site was full of construction equipment and workers. They have already started moving dirt around. I couldn't tell if our "parking lot" was useable but there was a lot of equipment/trucks on the rock road.

Thanks for the comments, Jon. I'm really suprised how much fun slope "combat" really is. And it is nowhere near as destructive as I would have imagined...not yet at least. It is really more like you're just trying to knock the other plane out of the air instead of totally destroying it. At least that's the way it has seemed to work with me, Gary, and Dave so far. Hope to see some others there too.
Dress Warmly!
Assuming I can get the tailfeathers fixed again, I'll be there too, perhaps earlier. I don't know if my son Scott will get up that early. Probably not.

Todd,
How do you get there?
Ken
Ken,
Check the map on Essential Flying Info.

The site is on the extreme northern edge of the map - due north of the Adtran complex.

Rob,
Do you drive on a gravel road off of discovery to get there?
I should be there at 930, have an 800 appointment.
Thank you, Ken

Ken,
That's correct. The gravel road leads to a power substation. I haven't flown there but it looks nice except for lack of runway.

Rob,
Thank you and see you there.
I have flown at Horizon Elementary which has a nice running track/runway.

Ken,
I have flown at Horizon many times. In fact, I may have talked with you there one day about 2 years ago. I was "fllying" (and I use that term loosely) a Hasbro Air Surfer toy plane. That got me hooked. I believe you were flying a hand launch glider. I like the track for a runway but the field seems a little small for my SmoothE and Tiger Moth 400. I may have met you there on another occasion when I had just finished my Gym Swallow. May have been someone else.
Anyway, I just got done with some errands and the wind is already above my comfort zone. I hope you guys enjoy yourselves this morning. I'll catch you at Discovery North some other time.

Rob,
Yes I remember flying with you. Glad to see you are hooked on this great hobby of ours.
This morning was fun, windy and cold. The li-polys needed some warm up time; at least for my t3d.
See you soon, Ken

I was there too as a spectator (slept in too late to fix my busted plane). Perhaps the extreme cold wiped out your short-term memory! Yes it was COLD!
From my two visits to North Discovery Site so far (spectating), I'd say this site is a keeper!
It might be interesting to bring a steel-tined rake to rake just a little gravel off the sharp edges of the gravel drive a ways along to make getting off and back on a little easier and safer. If not, our tires willlikely leave telltale ruts in the gravel.
I've seen nor heard of any glitches so far there.
The grass is great compared to the tall weeds, thistles, and mud at the former NG site. And there is no lake to worry about!
The substation is so far away and so small that you'd almost have to deliberately fly into it. Of course if you do, it would be REAL INTERESTING!
If you are willing to pull off the gravel and into the grass, parking is unlimited :)
Unlike the very public NG site, but like the MDA site, this one is rather hidden and private. I'm guessing we won't pick up too many newbie flyers from people just driving by and seeing us fly there. But privacy has its benefits, too.
Anyway, glad to have a great new flying site to enjoy my two new planes (Cessna 3-channel RTF and BeginAir 4-channel ARTF) as soon as the weather cooperates after Christmas AM!
The FrankyNoodle concept is back-burnered till I can find a swim noodle to "sacrifice" in the name of advances in "carve it like you want it" crash-low-technology.

Hi all!
I am new to huntsville and have been flying at a few different sites around the area! I hope to meet some of you all and try slope flying sometime!
I usually fly at a big church field on south Mem. parkway as well as my back yard often times...
So can anyone use the flying site on discovery drive? That would be a nice place in west huntsville to take a plane out!
Thanks,
Caleb

Oh Caleb,
You've gone and done it now. All you need to do was hint at sloping and the clutches of Dave aka GLIDERGIDER will seek you out :D
Yea, anyone can fly at the site. We don't own the field. We're really not even a formal club - no dues (well maybe you could send me some $$$), no AMA checks, nothing but a fun loving bunch of guys (or gals if you know any cute ones) who like to fly :)
About the only thing we ask is no gas powered birds.

Caleb,
Glad that you've joined us. Go to this web site which is the top page of our forum and find the "subscribe-to-this forum" button. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=292 That way you will get a daily email of all the activities going on in this forum. Its been a bit cold and blustery lately, so the activities have been squashed, but some guys are building and some guys are buying new planes to make up for the lack of fair weather. Let us know when you go flying, someone might join you. That's how it works around here.

Cool! Well this week I flew at Whitesburg Baptist Church field on South Parkway from 11:30 to 12:30...we usually go there once or twice a week for lunch!! Today was beautiful with no wind...too bad I didn't bring a plane to work!
Maybe this weekend we can meet up and fly!

Hey, JonStone can confirm this, but isn't the Whitesburg Baptist Church located very close to the RCRC flying site. Close enough to cause interference with the power fliers.
Is this the field that Rob Glover and Rex Powel did a study to determine if there was interference and they said it did interfer?
Caleb, I think you are flying only a mile and a half from the RCRC field. Unless you are flying a Aerobird or using one the new Spread Spectrum Txs, I wouldn't fly there. When Jon Stone sees this, he can confirm or reject my suspicions.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I do want to get together and fly soon.

Yes, our glider club (NASF) looked into using that field, and even obtained permission from the church authorities. Since it is close to the RCRC fields, the AMA requires interference tests before giving their approval. Some club members conducted those tests, and found that interference does exist between the two fields, and in fact, they are two close.

Yea, google earth says 2 miles apart...I don't fly anything too expensive there! We have though...A plane taking aerial photos over Memorial parkway! Yea we probably won't do that again...
I need to get one of those frequency scanners!
Last week flying at the church field I saw 2 other people flying at different corners of the field...and one of them shot me down! I went and talked to him and he flew his second model on the same channel as me! I think my batteries were weak too...I dunno...anyway, just glued it and is flying again! But I have met 3 other people that fly there often.
I guess it could cause problems at the club too...
Oh well, I guess I'll have to fly back over the Tenn. River!!! :)
Caleb (off to find another field) :(

Here are some we took in October over the church field...you can even see the RCRC field! :D

Perhaps in our essential infor thread we could use some links to whatever useful frequency and flying field proximity info there is from the AMA, the FCC, whoever regulates this stuff.
So far I'm operating on 27 Mhz in what seems like a wide-open, anything-goes, no real way to listen before turning on frontier mode. And no known radio problems of any sort yet.

Jim,
Wow, isn't like all cars, RTF planes, and radio shack stuff on 27Mhz?
Maybe we could get a list of used channels.

I think the biggest advantage to the 27/49mhz range is that the range isn't very good. Other than the HobbyZone products, most toy-style R/C stuff has a very short range. They can't reach very far to shoot you down. :D
