View Full Version : Aileron/Elevon Taper!

Ailerons and elevons taper or not. Most of my flying wings have tapered elevons, but some are fat on the outboard side and some on the inboard side. And on some, inc pushers w/ elevons, they are not tapered.
Also some swept, stright and tapered wings with ailerons, can be either or!
What would be the advantage or not, of these differences??
Thanks, Butch

The major advantage to tapering either in span, chord and/or thickness is both cosmetic and physical. Lightness towards the tip reduces the moment of inertia in rolling.
Lightness towards the trailing reduces the potential for flutter due to weight hanging off the hinge.

My question refers to the length of the cord, inboard being more or less than the outboard. And about mostly parkflyers and flying wings. I heard someone say that one way or the other was better for roll rate and the other for stability.
Thanks, Butch

Combat wings have the wide bit at the outer portion of the wing for better control response, fast wings(Bowmans' Sonic) have the wide bit inboard to prevent flutter. My Jazz 60" has straight(no taper) elevons, fast - but not highly maneuverable like a combat wing. Chris

I've found increasing the elevon chord at the tips reduces tip-stalls. The theory is the higher ratio of wing/elevon chord, combined with the normal setup reflex effectively gives additional washout.
