View Full Version : Helicopter Autopilots for a Harrier?

I am currently working on a 1/6th scale Harrier. The bedstead is operational, complete with all 4 puffer jets in the same configuration as the Harrier. I have looked into autopilots, gyros, etc and none of them seem to be right for the job. I am looking for a control that would work on this to stabilize the platform, if heading lock gyros would return the platform to the original setting they would probably work, unfortunately they change with ever stick input. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why not just use a co-pilot. Thats what they were designed for.

I looked into it, but it would not look to scale on the top or bottom of a Harrier, Plus I tried calling them many times and no one ever returned my call.

that's why you take the sensor block apart and then install the individual sensors internally at the wingtips, nose or wherever and then run three wires from each back to the board which is now stuffed inside the fuselage. all that's needed is a 4mm hole for each sensor.
and they've always answered my calls...even when they should have been at lunch...

I thought of that, but testing at my current location will not work due to buildings all around me, no horizon to be seen anywhere.

I don't think the actual horizon needs to be in plain site for it to work.
The FMA Copilot works great and you can even add the vertical sensor to stabalize the conversion back to hover after forward flight. Some pics would be awsome. This si something tried many times and never actually acomplished. Not to scale anyways, that's for sure. How are you powering the air nozzles on the tips and ends?

I have bleed air from the fan for the puffers

Brilliant. Do you just use electric solenoids to actuate them?
I donb't have much experience with turbines but I've always wondered if there was a way to tap some pressure off the unit.
I'd love to see a pic of any kind. Sounds very promissing.

Thanks P-38J-Lightning,
There is a fellow here that is going to set me up with some electronics to help my bedstead in hover, when I get some good video I will post it.
