on the microchip website I was looking at PICs and after the PIC it says i/p what does the i/p stand for??

It's the package configuration. I/P usally means PDIP...I think.

From a PIC datasheet:
Temperature Range
I = -40°C to +85°C (Industrial)
E = -40°C to +125°C (Extended)
Package
P = PDIP
SN = SOIC (Gull wing, 150 mil body)
MF = DFN-S
So I/P = -40°C to +85°C standard "Industrial" temperature range rated with a plastic DIP package.

Great thanks for the responses. I was on Microchip website looking for some samples of PIC to try out. I am new to this and wanted to get my feet wet with the least amount of $$.

Take a look at Microchip's PICkit 2 programmer. It's low cost, comes with a PIC, programmer, proto board, documentation, cables and software. It only supports their 8/14/20-pin micros but that's a lot of power you can use for anything but the biggest projects.
I know Microchip was out of stock last week but I believe that more are coming in this or next week. Check Digikey, Allied Electronics, Jameco and others too.

I already have the programmer just needed some more PIC to program:)
