Converted: Spitfire - England is safe from the fuehrer and the fuelie...

Axi 4030-16
Jeti 77 opto
Smart BEC
APC 15x10
MaxAmps 3s2p+3s2p 4200 LiPo
Stock retracts, flaps, etc.

AWESOME!

A bugger to land, though, does not want to come down - will get to 5 foot AGL, in ground effect, and float until it stalls. Working on mixing out this bad habit, and it is getting better...

The stock retracts are great - not weak like I've heard the H9's are. Bad landing dropped it from 4 feet, onto gear, only bent gear slightly, no breaks!

Take off is in 20 feet, less if wanted. I tested the 4s2p+3s2p (26v) and it took off in 5 feet  and had unlimited vertical - it gets small fast! Very stable flyer, but a bit touchy on the controls (porpoising) on mid-low speeds. I am working on the CG placement, slowly moving back from recommended.

I'm on the road this week, and don't have all of the relevant info, like weight (around 8 lbs) and pics of the conversion. The Axi mount, though, is the trusty 4 bolts and a PVC 1.5" coupler...works great.

BTW, I picked it up from the fine folks at RC Hobbies for $219 shipped! Whatadeal! RC Hobbies (http://www.rc-hobbies.com/product_pages/prod_a127.html)

Overall, I strongly recommend World Models and the Spit - easy flyer, gentle nose down stalls, and a beauty in the air. :D

well done Jimmyray !

Thanks for sharing the video .

Looks like a nice flyer indeed.Sounds good with the AXI. Just wish they would've added the wing root fillets.

Continued good luck

I have just set up my Spitfire and I only have to decide on a power system. I already have 2PQ 3S 4400s so I am going with those in series. I am using Futaba 3102's all around except for the retract servo and the weight without motor and battery looks good.

It will be either the 413016 or the Astro brushless 40-3 or 4 with the MEC Sbox. Running the numbers, the Astro/Sbox looks like it will put out more power with a slight weight savings with greater efficiency and I already have a good mount for the Sbox. Either way I have to spend about the same on either motor and I do like the simplicity of the AXI.

Sooo, I was wondering what your all up weight is with your set-up and how many Amps and watts you are getting with the AXI?

I have done the same conversion and found it very easy to land if you wheel it on but a hand full if you try to 3 piont it. Here is some video of mine. I have done mine with a c50 6.7:1 and 6s, it has loads of power.

I hope this helps.

JimmyRay,

Have you done anything special in regards to cooling the motor, ESC and battery pack? Can we see some pics of your engine setup with the cowl off? Thanks in advance.

No changes for cooling. I did not even cut the cowl. Cooling-schmooling - How hot can it get, anyway??? (famous last words before overheated AXI siezes up and is lost 100 yards deep in the kudzu  )

I redrilled the firewall, and used 4 long (2.5", I think) machine screws, with a PVC pipe for spacing. Works great, and cost $4! The pic is not of the spit, but of another plane that uses the same technique.

BTW, I shifted the CG forward a bit, and it lands like a dream! (had it rear of the recomended CG, silly me...)

Porpoising is mostly gone as well. :D
