Ok, I've started it a couple of weeks ago and haven't touched it since. Maybe if I start a thread I'll get off the computer and actually put some time into it.
Did the easy stuff so far. Mounted the aileron servos, using Hitec HS225's to cut down on some weight. In fact, using the 225's for elevator and rudder too and a HS75 for the retracts.
Ordered a set of retracts from Frank Tiano Enterprises and they are heavy duty, I think these will do fine in my CMP Spit.
I pretty much sold all my Axi's, will use either a Mega 22/30/3 with MEC Monster Box or Kontronik Fun 600-15 with Kontronik planetary gearbox at 5.2:1. Either way, about 1000watts but the Kontronik is more efficient.
My TP packs came in and will have them in hand this coming weekend. I'll be running a 3S3P and 4S3P pack in series for either motor.

drksyd,
Did you have to pull the gray wheel liner to swap to Tiano gear? Did you have any problem with the covering being damaged doing this?
Thanks,
Brad

this is a nice plane.
I also have the fTE letal retracts, but kept an axi 4130/16 on 6S.
these FTE retracts are just a drop in, nothing to pull out.

I thought H9 beefed up their retract gear starting with Miss America but it's the same size that was on my Marie
I really like this one... it's a toss up between this and the P-40. Any idea is the retracts on the P-40 will suffice stock?

If I don't have to pull the wheel liners, I guess there is no reason not to try a set. :D

I had also the P40 (lost because of a glitch). I did 50 flights without having to unscrew the stock retracts. They work just fine (you only have to take care of the linkage arm to avoid the axle screw to move).

Sorry guys, cable modem started going out and just got an updated one.
Tommy
I'll have to check the P-40 again but I'm quite sure H9 uses the same size gear for most of the planes with exception of the Corsair with 90deg rotating units. I don't care for the stock gear because it bends too easily, we don't have nice level fields with nice grass like Luc. Just from takeoff it could bend enough to not be able to get into the wheel well, with the FTE's I won't have that problem anymore.

Sorry, hope you got my pm. Honestly, next time I'll spend a little more and go pneumatic.

Tommy,
The P-40 uses rotating retracts like the Corsair, so the FTE units won't work there. I don't know who makes a good rotating retract unit if you wanted to replace the stock units.

Yes, I got your message...Thanks!

Thanks much for the info guys. On looks alone I'm leaning towards the Miss over the 40. I hope it flys as good as it looks!

Didn't even look at the retracts on my P-40. Century Jet Models (http://www.centuryjet.com/webstore/index.cfm) has direct replacement kits. Do a search for the product number and it'll pull it up.
Hangar 9 P-40
Product #: 34088
These gear are specifically designed for the Hangar 9 aircraft. Retract extension angle is 100 degrees. Functional oleo truts come cut to manufacturer specifications. Air system and axles included. Inner struts come with a life time warranty against bending as long as you own the landing gear.
Our Price: $275.00

It's been a long time in the making (procrastinating) but it's 99% complete and ready for maiden, just need to get prop adapter for spinner. Would be out at the field now but wouldn't you know it has to rain on the day of maiden. That's Ok, guaranteed one more week I'll have it lol.
Decided to use the FTE retracts for my CMP 120 Spit so I put back the stock units. I'm powering her with an eFlite Power 60 on 7S Poly Quest 3700 20's through a Jeti Advance 77 Opto spinning a 14x10E APC prop. Didn't get a chance to weigh her yet but probably in the 8-9lb range.

The weather finally cleared up this weekend, we were darn lucky too. Heavy rain here nonstop for 6 weeks, most severe this past Friday where a shopping mall was flooded ankle deep and a theater wall in the same mall had a wall cave in while a movie was showing. I know it's been bad all over but a lot of homes and businesses were flooded/damaged from all the rain we've been having.
Anyhow, back on track, I finally got to maiden Miss America today and it was all good. Caught a little side wind right after take off but after that it was all smooth sailing. Basically I flew the plane as balanced in the pic above but it was still a little tail heavy so will move my rx pack up.
Silly me forgot to cut a cooling hole, wondered why the packs were so warm after I came down. Also, need to call Tru Turn to get their longer screws for the spinner. Went to Home Depot and City Mill but they didn't have what I needed.
Trying to upload video now, it's huge at 22mb so it'll take a while. I played it and it's choppy, something must have happened when the camera converted it to mpeg2.

Thanks guys, that was the maiden so no fancy flying.
This was my '04 xmas gift from my fiance so she wanted to see it fly. Everybody watches the maidens, especially for the bigger planes. Don't want to miss a tragedy.
I burned the eflite Power 60 so I have an Axi 4130 in it now. I think I'll try a Hyperion in the P-40 when I get to it.

drksyd,
Does H9 make two sizes of the P-51? What is the wingspan on yours?
Thanks,

It's the .60 size, 65" wingspan. I'm not sure if they still have the 1.50 size P-51 but that one only comes in Marie.

Thanks! That confirms what I suspected. I am scratch building a P-51, and the cowl of this one is the one that will fit. I hope I can still purchase one, because I have been hating the concept of making one from scratch!

If you're making a .60 size P-51 you shouldn't have a problem finding a cowl. Just checked Horizon and they don't list the larger P-51 so parts for that will be harder to find.
Good luck with your build.

Wholesaletrains.com has the hangar 9 miss america p-51 on sale for 169.99. Iam not sure if it is open to everyone but it is worth checking out. That is the best price I have seen on their 60 size warbirds.........

Probably for members only. To become a member, you need to have purchased a couple hundred dollars worth from them first.

I have only ordered the g p combat mustang with them and they have included me on all their club prices. Right now they have the hangar 9 warbirds at regular price but they throw in a retract servo free. Not a bad deal...
